Chapter 6 - You died again

(Congratulations! You survived for one hour. You received one reincarnation point.")

The sun was starting to rise when Kane heard that message for the eighteenth time. Although it was good news that he walked for long without finding any danger and also obtained some reincarnation points, he had no energy to celebrate. Kane was exhausted. Even though he filled his body, that body had many physical limitations. Despite the fact that he found some fruits to eat along the way, his tiredness wasn't going away.

"This body is too weak… Still, I guess it is time to look for a place to hide."

It wouldn't take long for him to find some humans. Although he didn't see any signs of houses or people since he left the orchard, Kane saw several roads that had been made by the movement of carriages. He wanted to get away from any sign of civilization, but since he knew nothing about that world, it couldn't be helped that something like that would happen.

It was weird; Kane didn't find a single animal so far, not even birds in the sky. Considering that was an area where slimes were supposed to spawn, there was no explanation whatsoever for him not to find animals.

"I guess monsters are the animals of this world… just my luck."

That was very troublesome, but Kane was more worried about finding a place to stay during the day. After traveling during the night, he was more or less confident that he was safe in that region as long as no one found him.

Hiding in a bush would be enough, but since he had no idea if he would make any noise while sleeping, Kane decided to look for a cave. Bushes weren't good places to hide since he could be surrounded by enemies, after all. But hiding in a cave wasn't that good either since the enemy could block the only exit of the place.

"Oh, well… at least if someone or something attacks me, the chances of me hitting them in a narrow space will increase."

That also could be applied to his enemies, but then again, Kane didn't need any more worries inside his head. Fortunately, thanks to the sunrise, Kane quickly found an excellent place to hide: a cave that was well hidden behind a small grove at the bottom of a small mountain. Although it wasn't that far away from the roads, Kane didn't have much of a choice at the moment. It was to hide there or hide in the grove that had several fruits. The chances of him being found there were smaller. Besides, he didn't find any signs of movement there. Only some spider webs… Although the place seemed empty, the webs looked pretty recent. Maybe a spider left the place after not catching food in there.

"So, there are spiders in this world…"

Although Kane found webs, he didn't find any spiders. For some reason, the webs were only near the ceiling, so he managed to move toward the end of the cave without worrying about leaving some of his traces behind.

"Maybe the type of spider who made these webs only eats flying monsters or something."

Unfortunately, the cave was only fifty meters deep. So, it wasn't as dark as Kane wanted, but thanks to that, he confirmed that it was free of monsters and humans.

"I'd better sleep with one eye open… If something comes from the entrance… anything… I will use all my mana by firing Water Balls. Before someone or something learns that I'm a slime, I have to scare the crap out of them."

In the end, it didn't take long for Kane to fall asleep at the end of that cave. He tried really hard to sleep with one eye open, but as expected… it was impossible for him. That being said, he would suddenly wake up scared and sweating cold every few minutes for some reason. As expected, the trauma of dying and seeing so many slimes dying in front of him messed up more than he had expected with his head.

(Congratulations! You survived for one hour. You received one reincarnation point.")

Although that was a bit troublesome, not even if he wanted, he would be able to sleep thanks to those notifications soundly. Still, he decided to think that it was just one very convenient alarm to avoid getting annoyed by that voice.

Around noon, fifteen minutes after Kane received his twenty-fourth notification, he woke up after feeling a terrible shiver. He opened his eyes and readied himself to fire the Water Balls, but Kane didn't see anything in front of him. He didn't know if he was imagining things or if his instincts were trying to tell him something, but it was probably the first option since he wasn't a wild animal. Besides, it would be too weird if Kane had developed some crazy instincts just by living as a slime for a single day.

"I'm just too tense… Man, this body sucks… I slept for six hours, and I still feel exhausted. Maybe some food will help me to recover faster."

It was a bit dangerous to move in the middle of the day, but Kane would be fine since he saw some fruits near the entrance of the cave. However, before he could move… Kane felt something sharp penetrating the back of his body. Although his body wasn't human like before, he still felt a terrible pain that made him feel as if someone had opened a hole in his back.

"What the… how..."

Despite the pain, Kane didn't die. He managed to stay conscious and be stabbed by the other three sharp objects… four sharp objects had stabbed him, and he understood that he had messed up in thinking that the cave was empty. It was a world of magic, and he couldn't trust in his eyes alone… he learned that lesson too late.

"You died. Earth Spider killed you… you lost ten reincarnation points."

Kane sighed… if he could facepalm, he would, but he couldn't since he had returned to that white world where he had no physical form. As if dying wasn't bad enough, he would lose some reincarnation points according to the type of monster that kills him.

He didn't want to get used to that, but Kane readily accepted his second death. What was important was to accept his mistakes and move on.

"I guess the spider that killed me could disguise itself in the ambient since it was made of earth… the next time I try to sleep in a seemingly safe place, I will trust more in my instincts."
