"What did I expect? I knew this would be the case. Nevertheless, regardless of the circumstances, I will enjoy myself to the fullest."

The elders of the Hemto Clan purchased a petromax lamp at this year's Ramnavami fair using the fines and penalties collected over the past fifteen months. The village had eight panchayats, each representing a different community. Every panchayat possessed its own mat and a petromax lamp, which the villagers referred to as the Panchlight.

After acquiring the Panchlight, the panchayat members decided to use the remaining ten rupees to buy offerings for the puja. It would be deemed inappropriate to utilize a technical object with nuts and bolts without first seeking suitable blessings. Even during the times of the British Raj, sacrifices were made to appease the gods before commencing the construction of a bridge.

All the panchayat members returned home from the fair well before sunset. The orderly carried the box containing the Panchlight on his head, followed by the chief, the secretary, and the other members. At the outskirts of the village, Phutang from the Ram Clan intercepted them and inquired, "How much did you pay for this lantern?"

"Can't you see? This is the Panchlight! You folks from the Ram Clan always consider yourselves superior. You would call the flickering oil lamp in your home an electric bulb, and yet when someone else purchases a Panchlight, you consider it a mere lantern!"

By the time they reached their own Toli, the news had spread.
