The forest was dark and deep, with trees reaching for the sky and only a sliver of moonlight seeping through the canopy. The rumble of multiple military trucks and the roar of motorcyclists resonated through the trees, joined by the sound of helicopter blades.
Alex, Regina, Buddy, and Fletcher, raced through the underbrush at breakneck pace, evading trees and springing over rocks. It was a pitch black night, and any other person would have collided with trees at that speed, yet these four appear to cut through the night with their night vision as if they were a part of it. their eyes giving out a blazing golden glow as they moved in union.
The light from the choppers followed them from above, continuously blasting them with bullets. It was clear that they had no intention of letting them survive. Alex could tell he was nearing his limit since his eyesight was becoming progressively hazy as they sprinted through the night, and it was evident that he wasn't the only one experiencing this because the others were already falling behind him.
"Keep going!" He screamed at the others.
"We need to reach the sea!" Their lives depended on it.
They were out of energy and stamina, and the astatine poison coursing through their veins made it nearly impossible for them to use their abilities effectively. How did they get so much astatine to use against everyone? It was a miracle the four of them were able to escape from the party; it was a well-planned massacre. If only he had noticed that they were the only ones who arrived on time for the festivities. If only he'd been able to warn…
A yell pierced his thoughts. He came to a halt and looked around just in time to see buddy collapse on the woodland floor, surrounded by blood. A bullet had pierced his chest, leaving a huge hole in its place.
Alex watched his friend's life drain from him, hot tears spilling down his cheeks as he staggered and fell to the ground.
"Alex... I need your help." Regina's voice cut through his pain.
She had also stopped running. Her palms lifted Up towards the choppers, sheltering them with an unseen power that made the air around them as rigid as iron. The bullets now seem to stop a few meters away, unable to get through the illusory wall she had erected.
Fletcher, who had been standing near him, dropped to all fours and a loud howl ripped through the night. His body began to enlarge, and he became disfigured and disoriented for around five seconds before being replaced by an enormous Siberian lion. The beast turned its huge head towards him staring at him with dazzling golden eyes and he heard Fletcher's voice in his thoughts as clear as day.
"There will be no more running, it has been pleasure to serving you, Master Alexander."
Just as the troops arrived on their bikes, the beast charged at them and began tearing them apart as if they were made of paper, the bullets unable to penetrate his thick hide.
Alex felt a surge of rage pass through him. Fletcher was right; these people had taken everything he had ever loved. His mind was flooded with images of them slaughtering his friends like flies at the party, and now buddy was gone. Either he took them all with him, or he died trying. He cried out in agony and stood up, his eyes flashing with rage.
He used his telekinesis to throw the soldiers back, one by one. Slamming them into the trees or the ground. He fought on, his wrath giving him strength. He picked soldiers off the ground and flung them into each other, causing a chain reaction of bodies. He used his telekinesis to slam soldiers into trees and rocks, causing bones to crack and bodies to crumple. Despite his efforts, the soldiers kept approaching. They were unrelenting, and their numbers seemed limitless. Alex was becoming exhausted and knew he couldn't fight forever.
Raising his hand he began to gather the life force around him. Drawing the energy from the trees and plants surrounding him and when it felt like his body would burst from the energy it had absorb from the living things around he turned and ripped the choppers directly above them out of the sky. Sending them crashing on top of the soldiers on the forest floor. The following explosion seem to shake the night as the darkness enveloped them in the absence of the blaring lights from the choppers and for the first time, the soldiers stopped coming.
"Go!" he yelled at Regina, coughing up blood. "I'll hold them off!"
She turned and slapped him so hard on the face that he almost fell.
"you must be out of your mind if you think I'm leaving you" she shouted at him
"now let's go we either escape together or die here. Your choice" she said staring at him with cold eyes daring him to argue.
For a split second he seemed to fall in love with her all over again. Turning his head towards were the cries of the soldiers were coming from he knew that Fletcher won't be able to make it back he had sacrificed himself for them and was leading the army in the opposite direction. This was the end of the road for him too and Alex vowed to avenge their deaths every single one of them.
