Chapter 4 - Bad Omen

Jordan remained in his hollow hole wallowing in his pit of self-pity and depression. "Why is it always me? Why is fate so cruel to the innocent? Who have I wronged in my past life to deserve this life that I have now?".

The more Jordan allowed himself to think the more frustrated he became. 'Is this really all worth it in the end?' he asked himself.

'Maybe I should let go of this treacherous life and start anew' he thought to himself. But suddenly his mind flashed to the faces of his cute little brother and sister, and the face of his mother. He thought about how they would feel if he were to suddenly die or disappear.

'No there are still people in this world that I must live for, I can't allow myself to give up just yet!' he thought to himself as he somewhat uplifted his spirit.

Jordan slowly removed the bushes and dirt that he used to camouflage his hiding spot as he stepped out of his hole and looked up into the sky.

'So what if this world wants to see me die, who cares if everyone in this world opposes me? So long as I have my family I will continue to fight on and carve out a spot in this world for us, even if I must do it alone' Jordan reaffirmed to himself in his heart.

He went to a lake that was about 15 minutes away from his location where he stared at his reflection for a while before scooping some water into his mouth to ease the pain in his throat which was now sore from crying all that time.

Jordan then submerged himself into the lake washing the dirt and mud out of his clothes and the snot and tears away from his face.

While standing in the lake, Jordan enjoyed the cool sensation of the water against his skin helping him to relax and further calm his nerves. He took a moment to enjoy the environment.

Jordan looked up at the sky which was mostly blocked out due to the thick canopy of trees that blanketed the forest letting in subtle rays of moonlight that beautifully lit up the forest grounds. Jordan thought the area was quite serene.

Enjoying the area a few minutes longer it finally dawned on Jordan that the area was serene, eerily serene, considering that he was supposedly a little deeper into the forest than the outskirts which were supposed to be taming with wildlife.

However, since his arrival, he had not seen or heard even the slightest sign of the usual forest animals that he would encounter when here.

Jordan took this as a bad omen, he immediately climbed out of the lake taking a moment to wring his clothing out a bit and began sprinting home as fast as his legs would take him.

As he ran Jordan could not hear the sound of even a single bird chirping, crickets buzzing or toads croaking. He only picked up his pace as he tried to run even faster thinking some monstrosity of a creature would be lurking in the forest on this day just waiting to take him into its maws.

As Jordan neared his residence, he saw smoke rising in the air. As he was near the outskirts of the forest again the trees were much sparser allowing for the sky to be revealed in all its' splendor.

Seeing the smoke coming from the direction of his home only encouraged Jordan to run even faster.

As he arrived at his house Jordan immediately bent over and held his knees as he gasped and wheezed for air trying to take in all the oxygen that he could. He had been running for nearly half an hour.

As Jordan looked up, he suddenly took in a deep breath as he saw the destruction that lay before him.

In front of Jordan was his residence - well what remained of his residence anyway. It was almost wholly burnt to charcoal. Jordan felt his legs get heavy and his heart began to thump and beat wildly in his chest.

He once again lost the ability to take in oxygen as he felt his throat close up and his chest tightened. With every slow step forward, Jordan dreaded what he would see next.
