Chapter 55 - Walking through the Market

After a few more minutes of walking, we reached the city gate. There were several guards on duty, but they were not bothering the people coming in and out of the city. I guess they were only there to jump into action if there was an obvious problem. I was glad since Becca and I were currently dressed as suspicious looking mercenaries.

After we were within the city walls, I turned to Becca, "alright Becca, lead the way."

Becca's eyes scanned the market. Then, she pointed to somewhere in the distance. "The bookstore is in that direction, so we can take a look at the stands we pass along the way. Don't eat too much because there is a specific place I want to take you for lunch. There should be some fun trinkets you can only see in the Kingdom here."

"Sounds good, let's stop at any of the stands that catch our eye."

As we started walking through the market, the first thing I noticed was a cotton candy stand. I pointed to it and said, "look over there, we also had that in my world. It was called cotton candy. Do you want some? It's pretty light."

"It's called cotton candy here as well. It might be light, but it has a chance to make our hands sticky before we enter the bookstore, so let's avoid it for today. Let's go look at the stand over there. They make a special item that uses magic, so you definitely haven't seen it before."

An item infused with magic? I didn't know that was possible, so it definitely had my interest. Once we walked up to the stand, I could see what looked like wooden wands separated by the 6 elements.

While I was curiously looking at the display, Becca walked over to the owner of the stall. "Hello, can I have one shooter of each element."

The owner smiled back at Becca, "of course, we have a special deal if you buy one of each, so that will be 10 copper coins."

I wasn't sure the exact exchange rate to my old worlds USD, but it looked like most entree food at the stands were between 10 and 20 copper coins, so the wands weren't too expensive. Because they were so cheap, I tempered my expectations that they would be something I could use in battle or everyday life.

After Becca payed and was handed the 6 wands, we walked over to a bench near by.

"I've never seen something like this in my world. What can they do with magic?"

Becca chuckled and gave my a cute smirk, "you look just like a child who is about to get a toy."

"Well it is some kind of toy, right?"

"Yes, these are called magic shooters. They are able to store a single charge of a magic element that you can shoot out by chanting the spell. The effects are very small, so there is no chance it will do any significant damage."

"How is the magic stored? I didn't know you could do something like that."

"Any basic mage can store their magic in a mana stone, but the results are limited to this small effect, so mana stones themselves are practically worthless. They are only used for toys or other small household devices."

Could a lightning stone become portable electricity? I guess it doesn't matter since it's medieval times and I have no idea how to make my own electronics.

I picked up the water shooter. "So how do I make it work?"

"Just say the name of the element and shoot. So for the one in your hand it should be water shoot."

I stood up and pointed the tip of the wand to the sky so it didn't hit anyone passing by and chanted, "water shoot."

A water ball the size of a water balloon shot into the air a foot and started falling back down. Luckily I was paying attention and teleported out of the way of the splash zone.

Becca burst out laughing, "I was hoping you would get hit by the water. My parents wouldn't let me get the water shooter when I was a kid because they were scared I would make a mess. But as you can see, the result is pretty small scale compared to my actual basic water spell."

For only one shot in each wand, I can see why they were so cheap. I quickly tried the rest of them out. The fire wand held a constant flame for 30 seconds like a lighter. The wind wand gave a nice breeze. The lightning wand made the end like a shock stick. The earth wand was the most dangerous because it shot out a small pebble. It could really hurt if it hit you in the eye. The plant want sprout a rose on a small stem.

I quickly cut the flower to the right size with my hands and then handed it to Becca. "For my lovely lady."

Becca took it happily and blushed. I could hear her mutter under her breath, "I was hoping you would do that."

I smirk back at her, "I guess I'm too predictable, but if my predictability stems from you expecting me to be a good husband, then it's not too bad."

Becca's eyes opened wide for a second before they softened into a smile. "I don't know when it started, but it's nice to have faith in someone."

After I finished using the last wand, we started walking towards the bookstore again. On the way, I saw an accessory stall I wanted to check out, but I didn't want Becca to know I got her a present until the end of our date. I looked around and found a good excuse.

"Hey Becca, could you order one small shaved ice for us to share? It will hit the spot since it's a little warm outside. While you are ordering, I'm going to go to the bathroom real quick."

"Ok, what flavor do you like?"

"My favorite is fruit punch."

"Ok, I'll sit by that bench over there once I get the shaved ice so find me there when you are finished with the bathroom."

I gave her a quick hug before I left, "thanks sweetie."

Then I teleported towards the accessory stand. I quickly found something I thought would be perfect and hid it in my pocket for later. When I returned, I found Becca sitting in the bench with the shaved ice like she told me.
