Chapter 19 - Chapter 1

Shirley was walking to the California docks to board a cruise ship to Hawaii. Shirley said, "Finally, a trip with no mysteries. There'll be no hooded figures, no people getting attacked, and no mysterious robberies for two weeks. I can finally take a vacation when I can enjoy myself." Shirley got on the boat and went to her room. While in her room, somebody saw her on the ship's TV cameras. The mysterious figure said, "So Shirley Holmes is on this boat. Luckily, she won't interfere with my plans because she's on vacation." While Shirley was in her room, she un-ponytailed her hair and brought out her long brown hair. Then she took off her detective backpack and put it in her suitcase because she didn't think she would need it. Shirley said, "Time for a vacation." Shirley went to the side of the ship and looked at the ocean. While watching the sea, she saw a few dolphins doing tricks. Shirley took her camera from her pocket and photographed the dolphins jumping out of the water. Shirley said, "That will make a great picture."

Shirley left the side of the ship and went to the pool area to do some reading. Shirley sat down and started to read "Nancy Drew's Diary." Shirley said, "Dear Diary, I've reached a dead-end in this case. How can I solve this mystery if all my clues don't make sense?" When nightfall came, Shirley returned to her room and saw two odd people down the hall. Shirley said, "No, no. That does look like a mystery, but this vacation's mystery-free; I'm not solving any cases." Shirley went into her room and got ready for bed.

Later that night, Shirley heard a loud noise outside her room. Shirley got out of bed, grabbed her flashlight from her backpack, and looked around the ship. Shirley said, "This may be considered sleuthing, but I'll just think of it as investigating." Shirley looked around the pool area but didn't see anybody or anything. Shirley whispered, "Hello, anybody here." Shirley went to the shuffleboard court but didn't see anybody. Then somebody who was in the shadows grabbed her on her shoulder, and she dropped her flashlight. When the guy let go, Shirley quickly grabbed her flashlight and turned around, but she didn't see anybody. Shirley said, "There's nobody there. The moonlight must be playing tricks on me." Then somebody tapped Shirley on her shoulder. She turned around and flashed her flashlight on somebody. Shirley said, "Captain Craps." Captain Craps said, "What are you doing out after dark?"

Shirley was speechless and slid under Captain Craps's legs and ran off. Captain Craps saw Shirley trying to run away, so he called everybody who worked on the ship on his walkie-talkie. Captain Craps said, "Intruder headed for the dining room. Get rid of her." Shirley ran into the dining room, but The Cruise Director blocked the exit so Shirley couldn't escape. Shirley said, "The captain must have called for backup." Shirley ran into the Beauty Parlor because she couldn't leave the dining room. Then, all the Beauty Therapists saw Shirley and threw hairpins at her, but Shirley dodged them all and dumped a bucket of shampoo on the floor. Then, all the Beauty Therapists slipped and fell to the ground while Shirley ran out. Shirley almost reached her room, but the Cruise Director blocked the hallway. Shirley said, "Got to be another way into the room." Shirley climbed into the air vents and crawled through them. When she saw an opening, she looked through it and saw her room. Then Shirley opened the vent, jumped on her bed, and fell asleep.

When the sun rose, Shirley dressed and went to the dining room for breakfast. Shirley sat down at a table to eat while thinking about last night. Shirley said, "Last night was too close. If the captain saw my face, I'm sure he would have caught me instead of calling for help." Shirley threw her plastic cup and plate away and went to the pool area to go swimming. Shirley jumped off the diving board and dived into the pool. Shirley said, "This is a great vacation. I just hope everybody who works here doesn't suspect me." The Lifeguard heard what Shirley was saying and used his walkie-talkie to report it to the captain. The Lifeguard stated, "Our intruder from last night is still on the ship." The captain said, "Good. Make sure she doesn't cause any more trouble."

All the passengers got off when the boat stopped at the Hawaii docks. Shirley walked down the gangplank with her suitcase and saw a good view of the island. Shirley said, "Hello, Hawaii." Shirley went to her hotel and unpacked her things. After she unpacked her things, Shirley went to the hotel's pool and went for a swim. When she finished swimming, Shirley put her clothes on, grabbed her beach towel, and went to the beach to have fun. Shirley set her beach towel on the sand and laid on it. Shirley said, "Three days on vacation and no mysteries. How perfect." When the sun went down, Shirley packed up her stuff and returned to her hotel.

While going to her hotel, Shirley stood against a palm tree and sang while playing the ukulele. Shirley sang so well she attracted a crowd. When she finished singing, her audience clapped for her. Shirley said, "Wow, I didn't even know I had an audience." Shirley was about to return to her hotel when a boy from the audience stopped her. The boy said, "You sing very well for a girl not from around here." Shirley said, "How'd you know I wasn't from around here?" The boy said, "You told me it's all in your eyes." Shirley smiled and looked away with her eyes shut. The boy said, "What's your name?" Shirley said, "I'm Shirley." The boy said, "I'm Rex." Rex grabbed Shirley, lifted her arm in the air, and Shirley spun in a circle. Rex dropped Shirley, but Shirley landed in Rex's arms. Shirley got up.

Rex grabbed one of her hands and threw her, and Shirley spun around in a circle. While they were dancing, a crowd surrounded and watched them. Shirley stopped spinning without getting dizzy. Rex threw a rose in the air, and Shirley caught it in her mouth. Shirley and Rex stood side by side, held hands, and started to walk together. Shirley jumped; Rex held her in her arms, swung her around, and put her back on the ground. Then they held hands, swung apart, and then got together again. Rex said, "Thank you for the dance." Shirley said, "OK, I'll see you tomorrow then." Rex said, "Yeah, I'll see you."
