The pirate fleet was caught off-guard by the onslaught of the Solusian cannons. Without the knowledge of hot weapons, the only response that they could do is to retreat, a move that was expected by their opponents. Their breaking of ranks didn't help but worsen the situation as the Solusian fleet followed up the attack with a coordinated pursuit, surrounding the remaining pirate ships.
Had the pirates come all at once, they would have broken through with their superior numbers, but that solution was only available to the calm of mind. Herd mentality broke as the cannon balls flew and wreaked havoc in their ranks, driving the pirates desperate with each individual ships acting as they saw fit. The bombardment slowed down as the battle neared its conclusion
