Joanna's heartbeat sped up as she ran up the stairs and back to her room. She locked the door behind her knowing David was running after her. She leaned against the door as David repeatedly knocked on it. She sank to the floor, her head in her hands waiting for the knocking to stop and for her to think.
The knocking abruptly stopped and Joanna signed. Arguing with David was exhausting. She couldn't believe that he possibly meant that. What he was implying was wrong and immoral and no one in their right mind would suggest that. Jasper was her one true love and she refused to think of him because she wanted to honor her marriage not knowing she was wrong. David did not see their relationship as a marriage but rather as an agreement on a sheet of paper.
