Chereads / Lex Talionis: My Own Way / Chapter 3 - 3 Found

Chapter 3 - 3 Found

In the heart of the country side, a small village nestled in a valley, life was good. The villagers had lived there for generations, and they had everything they needed to survive. They had a fertile land where they grew crops, a river that provided them with fish and water, and a forest that gave them wood for their houses and fires. However, as the years went by, things began to change, and the village started to struggle to survive.

The first sign of trouble came when the river began to dry up. The villagers had always relied on it to irrigate their crops and provide them with fresh water, but now it was barely a trickle. The once-bountiful fields started to wither, and the crops failed. With no harvest to sell or store, the villagers were left with nothing to eat.

The second blow came from the forest. The trees had always been a source of food, shelter, and income for the villagers. They hunted wild game, gathered fruits and nuts, and sold timber to other villages. However, over the years, the trees had been overharvested, and the forest was now bare. With no game to hunt and no timber to sell, the villagers were left with no means to make a living.

And it was at that moment of difficulty, he came into the world. Things started getting better and better by the day.

John was in the middle of chopping wood when he heard a strange noise that sounded like a faint cry. At first, he thought it was just his imagination playing tricks on him. But as he kept working, the noise grew louder and more distinct.

The rural setting added to the sense of isolation and mystery surrounding the baby's arrival at John's doorstep. The nearest neighbors were miles away, and the darkness of the night seemed to amplify the silence and solitude of the countryside.

Suddenly, John felt an eerie feeling, as if he was being watched. He turned around to see what was causing the noise and there, at the foot of his doorstep, was a wicker basket with a bundle of blankets inside.

As John approached the basket, he noticed that the blankets were moving slightly, and then he heard a tiny cry. He was shocked and confused, and his heart raced as he slowly opened the basket to reveal a small, helpless baby inside.

John's mind raced as he tried to make sense of what was happening. Who could have left this precious child at his doorstep? Was it a mistake or a deliberate act?

Despite feeling a bit overwhelmed, John's paternal instincts kicked in. He lifted the baby gently from the basket and cradled her in his arms. As he held the baby, he couldn't help but feel a surge of emotion. He knew that he had to protect and care for this child, no matter what.

The moon shone bright and the stars twinkled in the sky as John held the baby tightly. The silence was only broken by the gentle sound of the baby's breath and the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind. It was a moment he would never forget, a moment that would change his life forever.

"Is something wrong, John?"

"Why the commotion?", a woman asked.

"Maria, Did I wake you?".

"John, what's going on? Why is there a baby here?" Maria asked, her voice full of concern.

John hesitated for a moment, feeling nervous about telling his wife the truth. He knew that she would be shocked and might not take the news well.

"Maria, I found this baby at our doorstep tonight. Someone left him here," John finally explained, his voice barely above a whisper.

Mary's eyes widened with shock and disbelief. "What? How is that even possible? Who would do such a thing?" she asked, moving closer to John and the baby.

"Well, the thing is...….."

"Uhhhh...…."

"I think it's our baby".

John went on to explain everything that had happened, from finding the basket to the Maria. He was surprised at how calmly Maria listened to his story, and how quickly she accepted the situation.

After John finished speaking, there was a moment of silence as they both looked down at the sleeping baby in John's arms. Maria put her hand on John's shoulder and said, "We'll figure this out. We'll take care of him together."

John felt a wave of relief wash over him. He was grateful for Mary's support and knew that he couldn't do this alone. Together, they made the decision to take care of the baby, no matter what challenges they might face.

As the night wore on, John and Mary sat in the living room, talking about their new responsibility and what it would mean for their lives. They knew that taking care of a baby would be difficult, but they were determined to do their best.

That was when something magical happened.
