Lucien sprung to his feet. "I would never do anything to hurt Levina."
"You may not want to hurt her, but if you let things with Levina escalate, she will get hurt, and you know this."
"I will see you at the race!" Lucien grunted and walked away.

Levina marched towards the nurse's changing room to change out of her uniform. The infirmary had closed before midday because of the race later in the day. Levina had been surprised to hear about the boat race; she had overheard the nurses talking about it that morning.
Lucien would certainly be in the race, that much she was sure of. She had expected him to come around to invite her to come watch him race.
She had caught herself several times listening for the sound of his approaching footsteps or his voice or anything that would indicate that he was coming to see her. But he did not come.
