Ever's POV
It's been two weeks since I moved into Paula's house and my baby bump has become more visible and I honestly love it! I had to get rid of a couple of my favorite pants which was sad, but it's fine. Anything for my little beans to grow happy and healthy!
Currently, I'm sitting out back on the patio humming my favorite song to my beautiful babies. I'm not entirely positive that they can hear me, but I like to think they can. I had woken up at around five in the morning thanks to morning sickness, and I just couldn't bring myself to go back to sleep. Mostly because I would have to get up an hour later anyways to get ready for school.
School was supposed to start the following Monday after my appointment to check on the twins, but I guess there was a gas leak in the building or something like that. Gas leaks usually only take about an hour to anywhere between an hour to a whole 24 hours to clear, but I guess they just wanted to make sure there was nothing else wrong with the building before hundreds of students arrived.
Which was a smart move considering who the parents of some of these kids are.
"When angels fall with broken wings, I can't give up, I can't give in! When all is lost and daylight ends, I'll carry you, and we will live forever~" – [Angels Fall by Breaking Benjamin]
"Mornin' darlin', what are you doin' up so early? " I slightly flinched at the sound of Paula's voice coming out of nowhere. She was already dressed and ready for the day, wearing an old flannel shirt and a black t-shirt underneath, and a pair of ripped skinny jeans. She was carrying two steaming mugs of tea in her hands, a newspaper was carefully tucked under her arm, and a pair of reading glasses were perched on the edge of her nose.
"I didn't see a point in going back to sleep…did I wake you?" I muttered, reveling in the delicious taste of the hot leaf juice she had placed in my cold hands. Apple tea with a dash of cinnamon, a spoonful of sugar, and a splash of honey, mmmm… delicious!
"Nah, I'm always up this early, how are you feeling? You start school today don't you?" She asked, flipping through her newspaper, furrowing her brows when she read something she didn't like. Her hair had been put up into a ponytail again, she must not let it down very often.
"A bit nauseous, but I don't know if it's because I'm pregnant, or if I'm just nervous to go back today. " I answered truthfully, earning a sympathetic look from her side of the patio.
"You don't have to go if you don't want to, I'm sure the school and your teachers would understand…" I'm grateful that she's so supportive of me staying home, but I need to go to school.
"Thanks, but I need to… at least until I'm 5 months– then I'll be going cyber. It's my senior year, so I want to be able to enjoy it as much as I can, for as long as I can… " It just occurred to me how much I will be missing out on. I don't think I'll even be able to go to prom…
"I was only 16 when I had Jake, so believe me I understand what you're going through entirely… " I found out a few days ago that Paula was Jake's birth mom and that she adopted Adrian and Jade from a bad situation. I don't know what that situation is, but Adrian promised to tell me one day when he was ready.
"Whatever happened to Jake's dad, if you don't mind me asking? If it's too personal you don't have to answer… " All I know is that his dad isn't in the picture.
I noticed how she looked up at the sky, a small smile tugging at her lips. Probably remembering the man who gave her her greatest blessing, Jacob.
"He passed away two weeks after Jake was born… It was a biking accident…" That was all she said, but it was enough for me to see the effect it still had on her. A single tear had dropped from her eye, which she was quick to wipe away, but I saw it and I felt all the more guilty for it.
"I'm so sorry, I had no idea–" I felt terrible for asking her about Jacob's dad, it was obviously still a sore topic for her…
You are such an idiot, Ever!...
"It's okay, just something I don't talk about very often, even though it's been almost 23 years, " I wanted to say more but the alarm on my phone went off, signaling that I needed to get ready for school.
Standing up I slowly made my way to the door, taking my mug with me, and stopped just before entering the house I now call home for the time being.
"Do you maybe want to– I don't know, go shopping later? I want to get a head start in getting stuff for the twins, but I'm not entirely positive on the things I should get now and what things I should get later and–" I swear rambling is my new favorite hobby or something. But the smile that made its way to Paula's lip's was certainly worth the embarrassment.
"I'd love to! We can go after I get off work, how's that sound? " she asked, placing her newspaper down and replacing it with her mug of coffee. I didn't even notice that she made me something different. I think I might cry.
"perfect! "
...…
Finally! I'm done getting ready and I still have about 20 minutes to spare!
I had decided to wear a simple and flowy gray t-shirt, a pair of black loose-fitting ripped skinny jeans, a pair of tan low-cut heeled boots, and a white-colored cardigan to top it all off. As accessories I've got my silver rings that I always wear, and a simple star choker around my neck. I didn't feel like putting in earrings, or doing my makeup– or my hair for that matter. I just threw my hair up into a messy bun and it came out way better than I thought it would.
I'm there for my education, not to impress people I don't care about.
As I was double-checking that I had everything in my old olive green heritage canvas backpack when I got a text from Adrian.
TEXT BETWEEN ADRIAN AND EVER
ADRIAN☺️
Good morning precious
I hope you slept well☺️
ME
Good morning!! I slept
fine thanks! Hub?
INCOMING CALL FROM: ADRIAN☺️…
A: HEY! I was gonna just message you back, but I figures calling would be easier… plus I wanted to hear your voice…
Aww! He's so freaking cute! I can almost see the blush covering his handsome face.
I giggled like a little schoolgirl when he said that last part. Well, I am a schoolgirl but– whatever you know what I mean!
E; aww, I miss you too!
Which isn't a lie, I haven't seen him in a few days because he's been busy helping out as much as he can with Paula's second garage in the next town over– where he lives.
Hearing his deep chuckle on the other end sent goosebumps crawling along my skin, and I could almost feel his smile despite our distance.
A: I'm glad to hear it 'cause I've got a surprise for when you're done with school today!
E: Really!? Can I know what it is?
A: Nice try, but that's not how surprises work, precious! It wouldn't be a surprise if I told you!
E: Can't blame a girl for trying!
"Ever! Your friend Bri is here! Hurry up or you'll be late for your last first day of school! " I heard Paula yell from downstairs.
A: You have to go?
E: *sigh* Yeah… I'm nervous…
A: Don't be! you're gonna do great today! I'm proud of you!
E: Thanks, Bub…
A: Bub?
E: Your new nickname, you like?
A: Haha I do! But you really should get going, I don't want you to be late…
E: Okay… bye bub, I'll talk to you soon!
A: Bye precious, have a good day!
E: You too…
CALL ENDED
Grabbing my bag, I rushed down the stairs and gave Paula a quick hug before heading outside and hopping into Bri's aqua-blue Jeep Cherokee. I remember when she got this car for her 16th birthday, her dad had bought it for her and had it custom painted into her favorite color. I'm pretty sure she quite literally fainted when she saw it.
"Ever Monroe! Where have you been? " Bri asked in her best Molly Weasley (Harry Potter) impression and I couldn't help but chuckle.
She looked really pretty today, and it almost made me feel bad for not trying harder to look presentable. But then again, she didn't have to wake up at 5 in the morning to throw up.
She was wearing a nice frilly black top, a pair of high-waisted ripped jeans, and a pair of black flat shoes. Her hair which was usually an unruly curly mess, was carefully straightened to perfection. Her lips were painted a deep shade of red that only she could pull off, and her eyes were painted with feline-styled eyeliner.
She doesn't like eyeshadow- she says that it makes her eyes feel heavy. As accessories, she has a thin black choker that sits nicely around her thin neck and a pair of round-rimmed sunglasses resting atop her head. A maroon-colored backpack- that looked more like a purse rather than a school bag– was thrown haphazardly into the backseat of her car. The sight made me chuckle.
"Sorry, I was talking to Adrian, " I knew as soon as I said that she was going to start making fun of me, but it was true so I guess I can live with the teasing for a bit.
"OoOooh, Adrian~ huh? What did you guys talk about?"
"School… "
…
"Aaaaand? "
"And he said that he has a surprise for me after school… "
Cue the squealing.
Where are the earplugs when you need 'em?
And for the rest of the drive until we were parked in the school parking lot– she was just gushing about how cute Adrian and I would be together. I just zoned out after a couple of minutes though. Too worried about the drama that I'm sure will unfold behind those steel doors.
Screw it!
It's my last first day! And I won't let anyone ruin it for me!
Not even Enzo!
Who is currently walking towards Bri's car…
… With a smile on his face?
"Good morning beautiful~"
I think I'm gonna throw up…
