Chapter 37 - Someone important

The man scowled at Arlan, still pointing his rifle at him.

"Is there anyone else with you?"

Arlan nodded his head nervously and touched Kaylynn with his foot, who slowly stood up, not knowing what he was planning.

The man frowned even more at the sight of the clothes and the bandage covering the young woman's eyes, but after a few seconds he stopped thinking about it. There were many customs of the island's inhabitants that the man was unaware of, so he just took Kaylynn's clothing as another way of expressing her culture.

However, there was one thing that didn't sit right with the man, and that was the body of the monster.

"You killed it?"

Arlan nodded his head while feigning an expression of fear.

Though he wasn't sure, Arlan guessed that they were part of the survivors living in the bunker. Since they had come a few hours after the fight between Arlan and the monster, he assumed that they had simply been on a reconnaissance patrol and had detected the smell of blood.

Arlan didn't know what the men's intentions were either, so he had no choice but to feign ignorance and weakness... even though it was clear that he had killed such a monster.

The man shifted his gaze between Arlan and Kaylynn in disbelief that they had actually killed a monster.

"Do you have weapons?"

Arlan nodded again without raising his arms.

"J-just a knife"

Looking at the corpse, the man took Arlan's words as true. He also ruled out that they were carrying weapons. Otherwise, why not use them?

He was still reluctant to believe that only these two young men could have killed a monster and more of those who were invisible. Although he noticed the foam and the fire extinguisher on the floor, he more or less guessed how they had done it.

"Who are you and how did you get here?"

Arlan bit his lips slightly and began to explain.

"I-I came from the Beta Bunker... and I'm the Fisher representative"

The man tightened his grip on his weapon, putting more pressure on Arlan.

"Do you have any way of proving that?"

"Y-yes"

What Arlan had said was too important to say without proof, not only his identity, but that there was someone who had survived outside the Deus bunker.

Arlan waved his hand slightly and gestured for him to look for something, the man gave him permission by nodding his head and Arlan reached down one of his arms to look for something in his pocket.

From his pocket he pulled out a leatherette wallet that was slightly stained with blood and placed it on the table before pushing it towards the man.

The man dropped the gun and took the wallet and began to search for any documents. After going through everything Arlan had, he pulled out a card and looked at it.

"Arlan Vondel"

The card made it look like he was an official representative of the company, but the man still had to confirm it, and he couldn't do that in this place.

He put the card back in his wallet and tucked it into his uniform. Arlan didn't mind that it wasn't returned to him, he understood that they needed to verify his identity and he didn't have much of an attachment or need for it either.

"You said you came from the Beta bunker, what happened there?"

Arlan, who had raised both arms again, began to tell everything he had experienced since they had found out that the food had been contaminated, how they had had to leave and how they had been ambushed by monsters.

He skipped the part where they had been saved by strange people and that he had been trapped in a town that didn't exist before. He also explained that Kaylynn was one of the people he left the Beta bunker with, and that she was a survivor from one of the many local groups on the island.

Although Kaylynn was Caucasian and most of the island's inhabitants tended to be browner because of their exposure to the sun and the area they lived in, the man didn't pay much attention to that either.

Besides, it was no lie that Kaylynn was an inhabitant of this island... just from another world.

The man turned and spoke to his companions while Arlan and Kaylynn stood with their hands raised in silence. They never took their eyes off them, either.

After a few seconds of conversation between the group of soldiers, the man turned and raised his gun again.

"We will escort you"

Inside, Arlan was glad that they would be protected and would have time to recover and think about what to do next. Although he didn't know what or who he would meet in the bunker, he would think about that after they were safe.

Arlan and Kaylynn put their hands down and walked out of the kitchen, then out of the cafeteria and down the corridors, trying not to make too much noise while avoiding stepping on scrap metal. The man and another soldier were in the front, while two other soldiers were in the back checking the rear.

As they walked in silence, Kaylynn quietly approached Arlan and asked him in a whisper.

"Are you someone important?"

Arlan was silent for a few seconds before answering.

"I am not, but who I work for is"

Since it was a secret that Arlan had been adopted by Leonard, he could not be considered a member of the Fisher family, at least not outwardly.

However, being a direct employee of Lia, who was the Fisher President, gave him some importance. Something he could use to get good treatment and information, which was why he had come to the island in the first place.

Arlan had been afraid to enter the bunker and see that everyone was dead, but now that he had met the group of soldiers, he practically confirmed that there were still survivors inside.

Still, he decided not to trust anyone completely and to try to go unnoticed while he recovered. Although it would be a bit difficult, knowing that he was a survivor from outside the Deus bunker and that the man would most likely report that he had killed a monster, which would indirectly draw attention to him.

It was a small price to pay for safety. On the other hand, Arlan knew that this was the most important bunker on the island, so if there were any big fish, they would be here.
