Chapter 41 - Night walk

Arlan didn't go far, he just stopped in front of the door leading to the next room and opened it slowly before entering.

He didn't have to go far to find a young woman sleeping peacefully in her bed.

Kaylynn had bathed before going straight to sleep, apparently, she was not interrogated...if you could call what they were doing to Arlan an interrogation.

After checking on Kaylynn, Arlan didn't stay in his room any longer and went back out, closing the door and looking both ways down the hallway.

The lights were white, but most of them were off, so he could see just enough to avoid stumbling.

Arlan started walking towards the entrance of the hospital, he remembered the way and it didn't take him more than 5 minutes to reach the reception.

There was an elderly woman, teary-eyed from sleep, but the cup of coffee she held to warm herself kept her awake. With almost no patients, it was more of an on-call job than nursing, but the woman stayed awake and alert for anything.

Taking a deep breath, Arlan made his way to the front of the counter and stood in front of the woman. However, no matter how much time passed, the woman seemed to completely ignore him and continued to sip her coffee while reading something behind the counter.

'…Hell yes, it works'

Until now, there had been a little doubt about whether the [Widow's Veil] would work, but now he was completely sure.

The supposed artifacts were powerful items, although it seemed that the maximum number, he could have was 10.

Still, it was Arlan's first artifact, and he didn't know when he would be able to get another one, or how powerful it would be.

Arlan no longer dared to underestimate the power of artifacts. The [Widow's Veil] alone was extremely useful, and even though it had drawbacks and a description that was too vague, it was still too powerful depending on the situation in which it was used.

He had yet to research its limitations further, but it was assumed that anyone weaker than him would not be able to notice it. But how to define who was weaker or stronger than Arlan?

Another point to know was how much Arlan could go unnoticed. What would happen if he made a noise or attacked someone and revealed his presence?

For this reason, Arlan limited himself to remaining silent and not making any noise that might attract the woman's attention.

A few minutes passed and the woman did not notice Arlan's presence at any time, and although no time limit was mentioned, Arlan decided it was better to continue exploring than to stay in front of the reception desk.

The only problem with leaving the hospital was that the door was sliding, which meant that it had sensors that could detect anyone trying to leave or enter.

But would the sensors be able to detect Arlan?

Luckily for him, the detectors did not count as humans, and since the effect of [Hidden] only applied to humans, Arlan was able to walk out the door and leave the hospital.

The woman behind the reception desk quickly glanced at the door when she noticed it had opened and stood up to greet the person in question, but after seeing that no one was there, she sat back down and mumbled wearily.

"I'll call maintenance tomorrow..."

Arlan, who was still outside the entrance, sighed quietly and continued walking, apparently the woman could not see him this time either.

The hospital was on the third floor, so Arlan first explored that floor before going down or up to the others.

Although the bunker was large, this did not apply to the outer area, the one that was accessible to anyone without proper authorization.

Therefore, 20 minutes were enough for Arlan to tour the third floor and get to know all the places that were located there.

To his luck, every entrance to a place had its name above the door. So, he didn't have to enter directly to know what was inside.

Returning to the hospital after memorizing the structure of the third floor, Arlan walked right past the elevator, which suddenly opened.

Arlan was petrified, but quickly calmed down and waited for the person to exit the elevator.

A woman, who Arlan recognized as the one who had performed tests on him over half an hour ago, stepped out of the elevator and began walking toward the hospital.

'Shit!'

Although Arlan didn't know the exact reason why the woman was on her way to the hospital, he could only pray that it wasn't to see him and Kaylynn.

How could he explain that he wasn't in her room?

Silently, Arlan began to follow the woman until they reached the hospital. The doors opened for the woman and Arlan took the opportunity to enter before they closed.

The woman behind the reception desk noticed the woman and quickly put down her cup of coffee, which was about to run out, and stood up.

"Dr. Melina"

The woman greeted her back.

"I'm going to go check on the new patients for a moment"

The woman at the counter nodded and sat down again after Melina left.

On the other hand, Arlan was pale behind Melina as she walked at a slow pace towards his and Kaylynn's room.

'...What do I do?'

Arlan could overtake her and get there faster than her to lie down and pretend to be asleep, but the hallway was small and barely fit two people shoulder to shoulder, so Arlan feared that if he passed Melina, she might notice him. So, he could only wait.

Minutes later, when they reached their rooms, Arlan took a deep breath the moment Melina entered Kaylynn's room first, giving him the opportunity to enter his own, remove the [Widow's Veil], and lie down on his bed before pulling the covers over himself and closing his eyes.

He kept the [Widow's Veil] under the covers, but with a thought of wanting it to disappear, the space under the covers fluctuated, and the piece of silk disappeared.

'Useful...'

A few minutes later, the door to the room opened and Melia entered before checking on him, not wanting to wake him. Soon after, the woman left and Arlan sighed in peace.

He had been close to being caught, but he couldn't deny that it was somewhat exciting to be able to go unnoticed, and now that he was in an unknown place and had the opportunity to move around freely without attracting attention, this would definitely not be the last time Arlan explored the Deus Bunker.
