Chereads / The Way You Left / Chapter 24 - Purpose

Chapter 24 - Purpose

This has never happened before; it is strange. I do not want to believe that the gods did this on purpose. It is just too coincidental; Vic has been sent down to take the soul of Tazanna, which had been a part of his previous life. This soul is mainly the reason why he became a reaper in this life. Even I do not understand what the gods are doing or the meaning of this at all. And most importantly, what in the world is my purpose here? Does my past life have something to do with the three of them, too?

"Look at me." I laugh at myself. "I am getting too concerned about these beings when the only thing that I should put my whole focus on is myself. Ah, worrying about those creatures will not do me any good. I might as well get some spa treatment while I am free and unbothered."

As much as I would like to confirm it with my beloved boss, I just know that they would rather have me figure it out all by myself, as I could spoil the story and make it less thrilling for those three. Ah, this is very unfair on my part. Why am I even here? My whole purpose, I suppose, is to natter about the lives of these mortals.

"That startled me!" Vic was standing by the door. His eyes were fixated on the tiled floor, his hands were shoved into the pocket of his pants, and his lower lip was in between his teeth. "Have you been there this whole time? For how long?"

"I want to ask you something," he whispers as he quickly passes by me and sits on the sofa. Vic rubs the palms of his hands together nervously. He might be here to question me about his past life, if I have even the slightest concept of his life while he was still a human. I can tell just by the expression on his face that the memory he caught a glimpse of is definitely bothering him. "Have you any idea what my life was when I was still human? That is, if you've ever watched over me."

I cross my arms. "Just a few days ago, you were saying that you have no intention of recalling your memory as a human. What made you think otherwise? I am quite curious about that memory you've seen; tell me about it." Vic glares at me; if his eyes had lasers, I would have been sliced up into pieces. It is a good thing he did not bring his spear along with him.

"If you have no clue who I was before this life, then I would not waste any more of my time here." Vic stands up from the sofa.

"While it is true that there is nothing that I know about your previous life here on earth, the fact that it is bothering you is something that I can feel." Vic smirks. "Tazanna was in that memory, wasn't she? It is not impossible for the two of you to have been lovers before. You were a man, and she was a woman. What could have happened, though, that you had to become a Grim Reaper in your present life?"

"I heard somebody call her Serafina." His response brought a smile to my face. This may be the reason the gods chose me to become these fools' guardian—I make them talk. "She had the same face as Felix's woman; I did not want to believe it, but that mortal really looked a lot like her. Are the gods making fun of all of us?"

I shake my head. "I believe there is a reason why they did this and why they let you all meet. How long have you lived as a reaper? More than five years, if I am correct, but only after meeting this couple have you had a vision such as that one. Rather than worry about it, aren't you supposed to be excited about the fact that you've finally found your way out of your repentance? This is torture, ain't it?"

"I can totally see that you've got nothing better to do than butt into other people's relationships." That statement sent me off.

"You have barged in here without any warning, and now you insult me? Take your leave right now. Exit just the way you entered." As I watched him depart my house, I could feel steam rising out of my ears. Felix flinched and kept his gaze on the man in the black polo as Vic opened the door. This makes it seem like these guys are friendless, as I am the only one they can think of. Although the tension between these two is really something, I am impressed by how they can still control themselves whenever they meet, especially Felix. Vic leaves my home without a sound, and the one that just arrived turned to me with creased eyebrows.

"What was he here for?"

"Oh, you know, for whatever you are here for as well." His head nods in response, and then he looks into my eyes. "I see. He's come to question you about the past he was talking about, isn't that right? I've come for the same thing just as you said. It's been bothering me."

"This case is by far the most strange amongst all that I've seen. I knew how reapers could not recall their memories as humans; however, Tazanna and Vic's situation is too coincidental. Who would have thought that they were in each other's past life?"

"Did he say that?"

"But is that more important than what you were originally here for, though? You're getting too focused on your fianceé's matters; you are nearly forgetting about yours." Felix scratched the back of his neck with a sigh. "I trust that both Tazanna and Vic will get through whatever this is. But you seem to be shaken by this. I need you to get yourself together. This is not the time for you to worry about other stuff; January 3rd, 2034, may come faster than we think. She can die this time if you don't do something."

Felix nods his head. "You're right. I'm sorry. I should not think about these things; the clock is ticking, and it is waiting for no one."

His left foot takes a step forward, but he stops when he hears me say, "Whether Tazanna was in Vic's past life or not, he is still the Grim Reaper whose goal is to take her soul, and you know by now how he can easily do that without touching a strand of her hair. Tazanna's life is in danger."

"Thanks, Bin," he whispers. "I'll keep her safe. I promise."

Felix entered his white car, and he quickly sped off. As my fingers dug into my blond hair, a heavy breath escaped from my lips. "Ah... It is exhausting to be the coolest being here. What would these idiots do without me, honestly? Your Greatness was right about bringing me here; these babies need a guardian."
