Chapter 4 - The System Responds

[What?]

-I am neutral-

[Who are you? Where are you?]

-I am the system. I am in your head.-

[What do you mean by 'I am neutral'?-

-I am neutral, I don't take sides.-

*Ding*

*Rewards are available*

*Rewards pending approval. Yes or No*

[Again why would I ever say no? Give me my rewards.]

*Request submitted*

*Generating rewards*

In front of Delson, appeared a box and a notification screen. The box was a little bronze box about a foot long, two foot wide, and six inches tall. The notification screen was flashing with a message.

*Allocation points available: Do you wish to accept? Yes or No?*

[Yes, I wish to accept.]

*Allocation points received*

*You now have 2 points to allocate. What stats would you like to improve?*

Delson Snow

Level 1

Health Points: 138/150

Mana Points: 0/10

Strength: 10

Dexterity: 15

Constitution: 11

Intelligence: 10

Wisdom: 10

Charisma: 14

[What?!?! Only 2 freaking points!!! You have to be kidding me right?] Delson was irritated by the lack of rewards.

-No, you barely did anything to get these points, so the rewards are more than generous, if anything you deserve less you spoiled brat.-

[Jesus you are a piece of work system. Well I guess it is what it is. Let's throw them into strength. A little boost there is better than nothing.]

Immediately, Delson realized just how powerful a boost 2 points was. While it seemed like the upgrade was puny, almost laughable, it was anything but. The change was clear, that mere two points and the creature he just fought was nothing to him. Delson figured he could probably fight 5 or six of them at the same time and rip them to pieces.

[Not bad!!! I can work with this. I wonder what the bronze box will have for me???] Delson reached out and pulled the lid off the bronze box. Inside was a dagger. It seemed to be pretty simple at first glance. [I wonder, since this Mindscape seems to basically be a virtual videogame, perhaps I can use an inspection ability to find out details about this dagger]

[Inspect: Dagger]

*Insufficient Mana to learn Skill*

[What the hell? Fine, Give me a mana potion!!!]

*Insufficient Mana to create Mana Potion*

[Figures, Well I guess I'll try meditation sometimes that helps in some of those videogames and light novels.]

Delson sat down and crossed his legs. Closing his eyes, he began to try and clear his mind, focusing on his breathing. He tried to focus on how he breathed, picturing mana as atoms coming into his lungs as he breathed in. Pictured the mana particles being absorbed into his body and adding to his mana pool. He kept sitting there for roughly an hour before he opened his eyes to look at his mana stat.

MP 1/10

[Oh you have to be kidding me. That's freaking slow. Hopefully I'll see improvements in that replenish speed. I guess I'll mediate for another hour and then hit the sack for a bit.]

After meditating for another hour Delson's MP rose to 2 points and he laid down for a bit of sleep. Little did he notice the corpse of the creature was beginning to emit a faint blue color. A few hours later Delson woke up to a faint hissing sound. He took stock of his surroundings when he noticed the creature's corpse was dissolving and emitting a blue light. Delson looked at his mana stat MP 5/10. He walked over to the corpse and prodded it with his finger. Astonished, he noticed the blue light seep into his finger almost immediately. He pulled back and checked his finger. It didn't seem to be injured from the light. At most it seemed to tingle a little bit. He put his hand into the like and felt the light absorbing into his hand. It wasn't painful at all. It was actually quite relaxing, almost like warm soothing water running over his hand. He looked at this MP and was shocked to see it had risen to 6 points.

[So I can absorb mana from dead creatures? I am going to have to figure out how to fight more creatures. I wonder if I could think a workout room into existence?]

*Insufficient Mana to create workout room*

[This is annoying. How much do I need to create a workout room or arena or something similar?]

-You require 25 MP to create a workout room, 15 points for a small dojo, 50 points for a dimension portal into an battle arena, 100 points for a fully equipped dimension battle arena with mob spawners.-

[How to I increase my mana then? Since everything cost so much?]

-You must use your mana and adapt to the presence of mana in your body. This will cause your mana pool to expand.-

[Hmmm, can't you give me a challenge or something to speed up that process a little?]

*Quest available: Meditate for 10 hours. Reward: New ability.*

[Oh come on!!! Meditating sucks!!! Fine whatever. Hopefully the new ability is worth it. 10 Hours is a lot of time wasted otherwise. I accept the quest.]

*Quest accepted: Must complete immediately, If you fail to complete this quest you will be punished for your failure.*

[What the hell??? That some bullshit. Whatever it can't be that hard to meditate for 10 hours right?]

Delson sat down and began to meditate, at first it seemed it would be easy until he hit the two hour mark. His back was sort, his rear was numb, it felt like his arms and legs were being stabbed with needles. He kept pushing through, as he neared the three hour mark, Delson decided to take a short break. He needed to stand up and stretch his muscles. As soon as he began to stand up something happened.

*Quest Failed. Prepare for punishment. Teleporting in 3... 2... 1...*

[What the fuck!!! YOU DIDN'T SAY I COULDN'T TAKE A BREAK!!!!]

*Teleporting initiated*
