Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Awakening

*Pant*

*Pant*

Within the Viridian Forest, Aeron ran while panting for breath. He did not know how long it had been since he started running, but he was glad he had been training himself alongside Axew for a month, or he would be out cold from exhaustion long ago.

He never looked back once as he ran since he knew even a second wasted could make a huge difference.

Then the wind rustled, and Aeron felt a distortion a few meters behind him.

'Shit.' He cursed inside his mind.

"You little piece of shit."

A voice filled with hate and anger was heard. Aeron knew this was as far as he could run. He stopped in his tracks and turned to look at the person who had appeared.

It was none other than the group's boss, followed by his Kadabra on the side.

"Aren't you gonna run anymore?" The man asked as he threw a hateful glance at Aeron.

"Cannot outrun [Teleport]. I better save some strength; I might make a fool out of you again." Aeron shrugged his shoulders before he acted to remember something and provoked the man. "How was the Pokémon the League prepared as gifts for you?"

"Never would I, Douglas, have imagined being scammed by a runt like you."

"It happens to the best of us." Aeron waved his hand. "I have a few stronger Pokémon; want one?"

"You…" Douglas gritted his teeth in anger. "Let's see if you can run your mouth once I have defeated your little Pokémon."

Aeron looked up and saw Axew's face hanging from his head. He shook his head and took out the iron poll from his bag. "I will be enough."

"We will see about that," Douglas smirked at Aeron's words

"Axe, hide behind the tree," Aeron picked up Axew and placed him beside the tree. "I will make sure to protect you."

"Axew…"

The young Dragon looked at his trainer's back. Although he could destroy the Electrical Room in anger, he could not muster the same courage against the opponent they were currently fighting. He felt scared looking at the yellow monster before him and Aeron. And yet, he felt safe when he looked at his trainer's back.

He was scared, but Aeron walked forward with an iron rod to fight off the Pokémon.

"Axe…"

"Let's see how you deal with this," Douglas taunted Aeron before ordering his Pokémon. "Kadabra, use [Psybeam]."

As soon as Kadabra heard his trainer's command, it started gathering Psychic energy with its hands.

Aeron looked at the Psychic Pokémon, gathering the energy. He could see the exhaustion on the Pokémon's face.

'Must be because of continuously using [Teleport].'

"You will not use your Pokémon and let it hide behind a tree?" Douglas laughed while facing the sky. "How can a shit like you become a trainer."

He laughed even more when a furious frown appeared on Aeron's face. He had finally had a reaction from the boy who scammed him in such a disgraceful manner.

Aeron's mind once again became calm as his attention was now focused on the Psychic energy in Kadabra's hand. He was waiting for the right moment. And it was here when the Psychic Pokémon released all the gathered energy at Aeron.

"Go."

Without hesitating, Aeron took a Pokeball from his waist and threw it toward the incoming [Psybeam].

A red light flashed, and a Beedrill appeared between the attack and Aeron.

The [Psybeam] travelled through the air and struck the Bug Pokémon that had appeared in its path.

*Boom*

A small explosion occurred at their clash, and the Beedrill was sent flying in the air by the Super Effective [Psybeam].

"How?" Douglas exclaimed when he recognized the Beedrill. It was none other than Jinga's ace Pokémon.

"I replaced his fingerprints with mine on both Pokedex and Pokeballs." A sly smirk appeared on Aeron's face. But this was not the time to stay still. He did not want to miss the minor distraction the sudden appearance of Beedrill had created.

While the Beedrill flew back in the air, Aeron ran forward toward the Kadabra. However, Douglas had noticed it and immediately called out for the next move.

"[Psybeam], once again."

"Pikachu, use [Tackle]." Aeron threw out another Pokeball.

"Shit." Douglas cursed since [Psybeam] would take a few seconds to charge. He decided to change the move. "Use [Protect]."

The Psychic Pokémon obediently followed his trainer and cancelled [Psybeam] before using [Protect].

A red light flashed, and a Pokémon appeared before Aeron and Kadabra. Douglas almost puked blood when he saw what Pokémon it was. "You little shit, it's a Kakuna and can't use tackle."

"Indeed." Aeron ran toward Lincoln's Kakuna and picked it up. "It's a Kakuna named Pikachu. And this is how it uses [Tackle]." While Kadabra was busy with [Protect], Aeron raised his left leg, striking a pose of a pitcher. "Fun Fact: I am a big baseball fan who knows how to pitch."

Under Douglas's and Kadabra's shocked eyes, Aeron mercilessly threw the Kakuna toward them.

Maybe because it was angry about how it was being treated? The Kakuna used [Harden] to toughen its body while raising its defence before slamming into the shield Kadabra had created. But as if it was meant to be, the Kakuna could not even leave a dent in the wall made by the Psychic Pokémon, causing both Douglas and Kadabra to sigh in relief.

But this was not the end of it.

"Surprise."

Aeron had closed the distance between them again, and now he was standing right before them.

"Fun Fact: I have an excellent swing too."

He did not aim for the Pokémon. Even though Kadabra's physical stats were pathetically low, Aeron knew he would barely leave a scratch with his hit. So, he went for the best option, the trainer.

The iron pole came piercing through the air toward Douglas's face. But luckily, Douglas was able to dodge the swing due to quick reflexes and instead of the face, he was hit squarely in the chest.

"Arrgh."

Douglas groaned in pain as he clenched his chest and dropped to the ground.

However, Aeron did not have the luxury to celebrate his victory as a fist crackling in weak electricity hit him in the chest. It was none other than the furious Kadabra.

Although it had never trained its Egg Move [Thunder Punch], it was enough to send the weak human flying before hitting the tree behind which the scared Pokémon hid.

Aeron imitated Douglas as he kneeled on the ground, groaning in pain.

"Axew. Axew. Axew."

The Dragon left the hiding and ran toward Aeron. He looked at his partner, coughing out blood with a pale face.

"Axew…"

His eyes formed tears as he heard the painful groans coming from Aeron's mouth. But what hurt him the most was what his trainer did next.

*Pat*

Aeron patted Axew's head before giving a soft smile. Unlike how Axew had seen before, the smile was weak, threatening to fade away.

"Xew."

His trainer clenched the iron pole before using it to stand up once again.

"Arrgh."

His painful groans entered Axew's ears once again.

"You little piece of shit. I am going to kill you and your pathetic Pokémon. *Arrgh*."

Axew turned toward the man his trainer had hit.

The man was being supported by his Pokémon as the duo glared at Aeron and Axew. It was then that his trainer's words entered his ears.

"Don't worry."

Axew saw his partner stand before him, covering him from the glares of Douglas and Kadabra.

Hasn't it always been the same?

In the Pokémon Centre, Aeron would always protect him from the men who made fun of him. He would take all the words on himself and comfort Axew.

Axew peeked at Douglas and Kadabra. He looked at how the Pokémon and the trainer were standing side by side. While here he was, being protected by the one he should be protecting.

"Xew…"

But he felt scared when he looked at those scary and angry faces.

"Kadabra, finish that bastard with another [Thunder Punch]."

Axew's thoughts were cut short when the Psychic Pokémon disappeared, and when it reappeared, it was standing right before Aeron with weak electricity crackling around his fist.

The fist hit Aeron in the chest, sending him flying into the tree.

*Arrgh*

He groaned in pain once again and coughed out blood.

Axew's eyes opened in disbelief when he saw his only family cough out blood before raising a hand toward him. Although Aeron did not have the strength to speak, Axew could read his partner's lips.

Run. He said before falling unconscious.

"Axew…"

Strength left his body as Axew walked toward Aeron with his tiny legs. He was standing in the puddle of blood. Blood that belonged to his partner.

"Xew."

He held Aeron's hand and shook them.

"Xew."

He shook them again, hoping Aeron would wake up.

"Ax…ew…"

But no matter how often he shook them, Aeron did not move or open his eyes.

"You pathetic little shit."

Axew heard Douglas's voice, but he ignored it. He was focused on waking up Aeron.

"Xew."

"He is most likely dead. He will never wake up."

"Xew…"

Axew did not understand what death meant. But he understood, 'he will never wake up.'

"…Xew…"

"Kekeke. I wanted to give him a slow death, but who knew the little shit would hit so hard."

"...Xew..."

Axew called once again before he stopped. The tears in his eyes blurred his vision. He held Aeron's face in his tiny hands.

"Now, it's your turn. Or maybe, I should add you to my roster? Kekeke…Hmm?" Douglas laughed at the top of his lungs but stopped laughing when he suddenly felt an eerie silence that had taken over the forest. He caught a glimpse of red in the corner of his eyes and looked at Axew. No. He looked at the eyes of Axew, which had turned red.

The little dra…The Dragon turned around toward Kadabra, standing a few meters away. His head was hung low, and a shimmer of energy wrapped around his body.

Axew raised his head into the sky and roared at the top of his lungs.

"AXEW!!!!"

But all the Viridian Forest heard was a draconic roar that sent shivers down their spines. It was a roar of an apex predator, a proud Dragon. A rageful Dragon that was in…

[Outrage].
