Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: The Orange Puppy

"Good job."

Aeron had a pleased smile as he patted Axew's head.

"Axew."

The Dragon-type Pokémon shared his trainer's excitement after they had won their first official battle and one against the redhead who had thoroughly pissed them off.

"Axew line live up to their nickname, The Juggernauts." Nessa walked toward the duo, looking at the Dragon in Aeron's arms. "To be able to stop that [Quick Attack] head-on is not an easy task." She walked forward and patted Axew as well. "I will one day get myself a Dragon-type Pokémon as well."

"You will surely get your Dragon-type, too," Aeron reassured before he scanned his Pokémon again.

"You learned new moves?" Aeron was surprised, but he welcomed it.

"No wonder the Eevee and Bellsprout were too afraid to move mid-battle. You made sure to scare them, heh." Nessa praised Axew and loved the reaction the Pokémon gave her.

"Axew."

The Dragon puffed his chest in pride as he accepted Nessa's praises.

"Should we go to the Pokemart now?"

Aeron nodded and stood up while Axew climbed back on his head.

Nessa called out her starter, Horsea, and they walked together toward Pokemart, ten minutes from the Pokémon Centre.

"Is there anything specific you are planning to buy?" Aeron asked the girl with oceanic blue eyes, walking by his side.

"I hope to buy a TM which would be good for my

Horsea and some unique Pokeballs." Nessa looked excited when she talked about the Pokeballs, and before Aeron could say anything, she quickly explained. "I love collecting different Pokeballs. One of my hobbies. What about you?"

"A TM if I can get one. They are tough to get your hands on unless you are lucky or beat an Official Gym Leader." Aeron sighed at his own words. "I was lucky to get [TM: Protect] last time. I must also stock up on Axew's favourite Spicy Dragon Berries."

"I was lucky to get some good TMs, but lately, it has been challenging..." Being an Official-Gym Leader had a lot of benefits; access to resources that were otherwise hard to get was just among the very few.

"Are there any Pokémon you want to catch in Kanto? Just Water-types, or are you looking for a balanced roster?" Aeron knew Nessa only had one Pokémon in her roster. But he was not sure if the girl was going to catch some in Kanto or not. But his words were met by an enthusiastic nod.

"I am going to catch every Water-type I like and not just Water-type; I am going to catch every Pokémon that I think would be a great addition to the team." Nessa's oceanic blue eyes flashed excitedly as she thought about all the Pokemon she would meet in Kanto Region. "Although I want to specialize in Water-type, it doesn't mean I will never catch a Pokemon, that isn't it. It is very challenging to be a monotype trainer since you can get wiped out if you meet an opponent with a type advantage."

Aeron agreed with Nessa's last words. That was also why he wanted to be something other than a monotype trainer. However, training Pokémon of different types was hard, and few could afford that expenditure. Moreover, in a non-monotype team, a trainer had to teach all the Pokémon separately with varying methods of training. It was not a wonder that it was rare to find a trainer who specialized in various types rather than just one or two.

"I want to be the greatest Water-type trainer. Thus, I will train one Pokémon from each type to learn about their strengths and weaknesses," explained Nessa. "At least that's the plan for now." She looked at Aeron before asking. "I know you don't want to be a monotype, but do you have plans for your roster? I bet you want to catch a lot of Pokémon as well."

"No." Aeron disagreed with Nessa's statement. "Unlike you, who comes from a prestigious family, I neither have the resources nor the space for my Pokémon."

Nessa came from a lineage of Gym Leaders and was loaded with Money. Her family house was big enough to hold a lot of Pokemon and not get cramped. However, Aeron could not afford such a thing.

The Duskborn family estate was, although a little bigger than an average house, and his parents already had a hard time letting out all of their Pokémon.

"It might sound unrealistic and mean, but I am going to be very selective of the Pokemon I add to my roster," said Aeron, as he already knew some of the Pokémon he would want. "Fifteen. That is the max number I have in my mind so far. If conditions change later on, which they will as I will make sure of that, I will think of catching more Pokémon, but even then, not too many."

"So less?" Nessa exclaimed while the Duskborn just shrugged his shoulder.

"It is what it is."

On average, every trainer would have somewhere between thirty to fifty Pokemon towards the end of their careers. And that was for the ones who were on the weaker side; the very exceptional trainers could have even more.

"Look, we are here."

The duo walked into the Pokemart, and surprisingly, it took them three hours before they could walk out of it—courtesy of a model who wanted to shop for some new clothes in Kanto.

"Do all girls love shopping so much?" Aeron stretched his neck as he walked out of the Pokemart. Axew had the same expression as Aeron, while Horsea seemed used to his trainer's extended stays in Pokemart.

"Oh, come on!" Nessa pouted at Aeron. "At least you got yourself some cool new Pokeballs."

Aeron looked down at his necklace, where a new Luxury Ball was hanging, while five more were on his magnet belt. Although he had spent quite some money on them, 30,000 P$, the Duskborn was happy with his choice.

"See?" When Nessa saw Aeron's pleased expression, she immediately pointed it out. "We still have a few hours before your new egg reaches the Pokémon Centre."

Aeron was not one to complain when he was indeed happy with his new purchase though he had slight regret at not getting any TMs. They were too popular, and as soon as one appeared in the market, it would be sold immediately.

'There is still the offer of an item I can request from the League.' Aeron still had yet to decide but was leaning toward a Dragon Scale to help with Axew's growth rate.

"Are you coming?" Nessa called out when she saw Aeron standing in a daze, thinking about something.

Aeron shook his head to clear his mind and followed after his travelling companion. Now was not the time to think about anything else. Walking up to Nessa, the duo approached the Pokémon Centre.

It was midnight, and most people staying in Viridian City Pokemon Centre were asleep. But not a fifteen-year trainer who was excited about his second Pokémon.

Aeron's gaze had not left the red-coloured egg for the last two hours.

"How long are you going to stare at it?" asked Nessa, who was in his room, lying on the couch. Although she wanted to see an egg hatch, she could not stare at one for hours. "Do you want..."

She was about to ask if Aeron wanted something to drink, but her words were left unsaid as a red glow filled the room.

*Crack*

Her head jerked toward the egg, and she immediately sat up. Her oceanic blue eyes looked at the red-coloured egg that had started to form cracks all over its body.

It did not take long before a tiny paw cracked open the egg. Soon after, another paw broke the shell, and a small puppy lifted its head out. It instinctively ate the eggshell before giving a satisfied bark.

"Woof."

The orange puppy scanned the room, and its eyes landed on the black-haired boy. Its black eyes stared into the boy's dark-gold eyes before it lunged forward.

"Woof."

"Hey, buddy, welcome to the world." Aeron hugged the orange puppy and ruffled its smooth fur. But a few seconds after the Growlithe landed in his arms, it fell asleep.

"It's...adorable." Nessa, who had hidden away when Growlithe came out of the egg, walked out of the closet. Her eyes never left the orange puppy in Aeron's arms. She raised her arms toward Aeron. "Can I?"

The Duskborn nodded with a smile and handed Growlithe to Nessa.

"It's so cute!" The Galarian girl rubbed her nose with Growlithe's, making the orange puppy smile in its sleep. "You should capture it and have Nurse Joy check on him, just in case."

"Axew!"

But before Aeron could tap the Growlithe with a luxury ball, the Dragon jumped out of his Pokeball and looked at Nessa with the same expression she looked at him a few seconds ago.

"You want to hold him as well?" asked Nessa as she sat down and let Axew look at the orange puppy.

"Xew!"

The Dragon's eyes lit up at the look of newborn Pokémon.

"You have a younger brother," said Aeron as he tapped Axew's head. "Isn't he the cutest?"

"Axew!"
