Chapter 26 - An Offer Too Tempting

Beep, beep, beep-

Warrell fidgeted with the device. Constantly watching it as he walked through the streets. His nerves have been on edge ever since his package was stolen. This was his chance to strike back, and someone stole it!!

Placing the device into a pocket he turned to meet a large abandoned parking lot. Several floors spiraled high, a sign of how busy this city used to be before it became lawless. Now that vehicles were banned on the streets thanks to the gangs, a building like this was useless. The fact that a gang took it over just proved that fact.

A group sat around casually at one of the entrances. Their outfit held a gothic look, black and silver accessories. Unlike many other gangs, which had a uniform to display their unity, some gangs opted to keep a style instead. For instance the Street Dogs had their leather jacket, with the german shepherd print on the back. For Owl Eye, it was the gothic style. Except they lacked the makeup to complete it, the style was exclusively with clothing and accessories.

As Warrell walked up to the group they quieted down. One watched him carefully and spoke up once they were in ear distance, "Something you need? This is Owl Eye territory."

"I'm here with an offer."

The group glanced at each other. A few shrugs and questioning looks were tossed about before the same person continued, "Depends on what your offer is."

"I have information on DeeDee."

". . ."

Another set of glances, this time the person walked up towards Warrell, "You telling the truth?"

"I wouldn't brazenly walk here without confidence."

"Old Eyes is gonna want to hear it then. You try anything funny and the asphalt will be your permanent home."

"Not a moron."

"Good, then follow me."

Warrell walked next to the guide through their base. Several gang members tossed glances his way, and a certain amount of hostility lingered in the air. As an ex-Leader of a—well almost District level—gang he wasn't going to shirk away. Instead he stared back at several of the gang members, and the tension began to rise.

Approaching the top a gang member sat on a barrel, surrounded by various objects. The gang members were pleasantly chatting around this area, leaving most of this floor bare in terms of people. One person noticed Warrell and his guide walking and raised a hand. Slowly, but steadily the rest of the group quieted down.

"Old Eyes, this guy says he knows about D-D."

Compared to the rest of the gang, Old Eyes was dressed a bit more exorbitantly. The gang members had a various amount of accessories on them. As Warrell was making sure his presence wasn't drowned out in the hostility, he was making a mental note of the patterns. From what he could gather, the higher position someone had in Owl Eye, the more accessories they had. It seemed the general force was limited to rings, the commanders had a few necklaces or bracelets along with the rings, and now Old Eyes had all of those with an addition to a pair of silver earrings that had two crosses hanging down, and a ring piercing on his nose.

Warrell glanced at some of the others and found a few with piercings. He presumed these to be Old Eyes' direct underlings. The leader of Owl Eye slid off the barrel and walked up, "Is that so? That bastard has been a thorn in my side these past few months."

The guide nudged Warrell forward, "Go on."

His mental fortitude was something to note. Normally anyone would feel pressured by a gang leader's posture, but to Warrell this was nothing. Instead he calmly stated his intentions, "He stole something from me, and I want it back. I heard you all had problems, so I came with a deal. You help me get back my item, and I provide you with the location he hid it."

"So you know where you item is, but not where he is?"

"I don't think I need to spell out why this is a good opportunity."

"Oh I think you do."

"I have possibly the best lead you all have ever gotten. This gives you a chance to get the drop on him and teach this fucker a lesson. All I ask for in return is my package."

"Yet it isn't guaranteed."

"I didn't take you to be the naive kind."

Tension rose again, but Warrell was unfazed. If he relented here then he would lose the edge. Although he was vastly outnumbered in the middle of this gang's base, he had several ideas on how to escape if things got messy.

Suddenly Old Eyes grinned, "Good, you're not some spineless idiot. The only thing you want is this package?"

"Nothing else matters."

"Good, then you leave D-D to us. So what exactly is this information?"

Warrell now weighed his options. If he easily revealed the tracker there was a chance the gang would simply take it for their own plans. However he still desperately needed it to track the package. Showing his hand here was a dangerous play, and he was unsure if the risk was worth it.

Screw it then!

Fishing the device out of his pocket he explained, "The package he stole has a tracker. I know where its location is at all times. I highly doubt he would leave it in some random place where it could potentially be stolen again. Most likely he's trying to figure out what's inside."

"So we follow this tracker and likely have the jump on him while he's opening this package? How long has it been?"

"Last night, it took me a bit to come here."

"The package would already be open then."

"Not quite, container is military grade. You'd need a top notch saw to even scratch its surface. Stuff was designed to withstand the more powerful abilities."

"Containers like that tend to hold some top notch cargo. Stuff that could drastically fund my gang. How do you know I won't just take it now that you told me?"

Here it was. If he screwed up here then he really had no other options. When it comes to lying Warrell felt nothing was more important than confidence. A lie drenched in confidence made others second guess what you're saying, all you had to do then was further reinforce your point.

So he spoke with a mocking look, "Did you not hear me? Military grade package, do you think whoever wants that package certainly wouldn't also have the tracker? Is it worth potentially offending some powerful organization for a few stacks?"

Old Eyes weighed it in his mind before he spoke, "Fine then. What time you trying to catch him?"

"Soon as possible."

"Good, Hail! You and the rest of the of the Double Eyes go and find him. I expect you all to be dragging him back beaten and bloody!"

A person stood up with a few others, nodding at Old Eyes they spoke with a determined tone, "Don't worry Old Eyes, he'll be here."

"Good! Now go."

Hail brought forth a group of people and approached Warrell. Staring at Warrell he spoke, "You sticking with us?"

"Obviously, I only know what the package looks like."

"Good, then let's move."

Returning back to the ground floor Warrell noticed the once hostile gazes now averted their eyes. He almost wanted to snort in amusement, but expertly withheld. As they moved Hail was quick to gather information, "That gps tracker of yours. How accurate is it?"

"The pinged location means it's within a hundred meter radius. Once I get within a ten meter radius of it the tracker itself should beep."

"Pretty accurate, a lot of technology in this city doesn't work well."

"That's because of Ghost Hand isn't it?"

"Oh? You know of that. . . you seemed pretty levelheaded dealing with Old Eyes. You in a gang?"

"Used to be."

"So you have experience. However I'm still going to ask you to not participate in the fight."

"That's fine. I just want the package."

"As long as we're clear on this."

As this group moved forward, D-D remained blissfully unaware. Instead he was inspecting the sealed container currently. He attempted to pry it open, and even damage it, but the case was incredibly sturdy.

Leaning against a chair they crossed their arms, "Damn, this thing isn't simple."

A potentially high risk item was now in their possession. With this much security, there was no doubt whatever lie inside was incredibly precious. Originally D-D thought it might be something illegal, but now he felt it was something to do with the government. Messing with something this dangerous was too risky, and now D-D half considered abandoning it in some alley.

Walking to the window to think he glanced outside and saw a group of people moving. Erasing his wandering thoughts he focused on this group of suspicious people and immediately recognized Warrell.

Glancing back at the case he connected the dots. This thing was being tracked!
