Chapter 40 - False Accusations

Icarus cracked the door open just enough to see Malachi's face in the hallway.

And enough to see his eyes darting between him and Rachael, who was still lying on the bed.

"What?" Icarus asked. It came out harsher than he meant it to, and it showed on Malachi's face.

"Your father wants to see you," she said, his eyes darting to Rachael and back one more time. "Alone."

Icarus ignored the dread that immediately flooded his stomach.

"Did he say why?" Icarus asked. 

"No," Malachi responded. "But he didn't look happy. I would hurry if I were you."

Icarus glanced down the hallway, to where one of his trusted guards was usually on guard. "Where's the guard?" he asked.

"Your father also requested his presence, too. He's already there."

Malachi was terrible at hiding his expressions. He always was. Icarus could see the subtle fear all over his face.
