Chapter 11: Playing With Food

Inside of a room that looked to be abandoned as cobwebs and dirt filled the space.

A woman was sitting at an old desk, writing in her journal.

She looked to be at best in her late twenties or early thirties at worst. Her hair was dark and long but tied into a ponytail. Her eyes were a colour of brown and her face although not extraordinary had some charm especially with her light scar on the left cheek which combined with her focused expression made her look fierce and experienced. She also wore simple but uncommon clothes. They seemed designed to allow for quick movements and had some spots for where something could be hidden.

Her gaze suddenly went off from the journal and she instead focused on the door in front of her. Unknowingly her heart started to beat faster as the most primal emotion enveloped it. Fear.

The door opened and a man wearing a dark cloak entered through it. She did not dare to look at him too closely though. She had a dreadful premonition that something bad would happen if she did.

"How interesting"

The man stopped just before her desk and commented to himself. He seemed amused by something and picked up the journal the woman was writing in just a short moment ago. She did not oppose that action or it would be more correct to say that she couldn't. No matter how panicked and desperate she was, her body refused to move.

"Oh? Your name is Renfri? It sounds nice. My name is Amon by the way"

Amon leisurely flipped through the pages in her journal as he introduced himself.

"I did not expect to meet someone like you here. How unlikely is that especially in times like these? Maybe we were fated to meet?"

He posed questions but did not expect answers. He closed the journal and placed it back at the desk.

"Who are you?"

Renfri finally mustered enough courage to ask.

"Didn't I already introduce myself?"

Amon ridiculed with a playful tone as he leaned forward. He gently raised her head by the chin and their eyes finally met.

Renfri looked in a daze at the pair of red eyes just in front of her face and slowly everything turned more and more illusionary until her vision turned completely dark.

Her movements however suddenly froze as her expression turned from a stoic one to pure shock and fear. Sweat appeared on her forehead and her gaze was now fixed on the door in front of her.

Sure enough the door opened and five men wearing dark cloaks entered through it. Once again she was unable to make her body move as the group of men encircled her.

In complete synergy they removed their hoods. They all looked alike with the same faces, builds, dark hair, wide smiles and… red coloured eyes.

Renfri seemed to be confused as everything turned more incorporeal by the second.

Suddenly she jumped from her chair and grabbed the knife hidden behind her back under a shirt. She observed the door in front of her with a look of determination.

This time the door loudly slammed open and a dark mist instantly enveloped her.

The last thing she saw were a pair of eyes hidden deep inside of the fog.

This time before she could do anything Amon appeared right in front of her and grabbed her gently by the chin.

Their eyes met and everything collapsed like a broken mirror.

A woman was sitting at an old desk, writing in her journal.

She seemed tired and with a look full of resignation observed the door in front of her.

How many times did she experience the same scenario play out? A hundred? A thousand? She could not tell anymore but one thing was certain at this point.

Her will to resist was gone as she simply stopped caring about what was going to happen. How many times can someone be scared by the same trick?

This time however was different.

The sound of knocking penetrated the room and a male voice filled with anxiety accompanied it.

"Is… Is anyone inside?"

Renfri raised her brows. The being that tormented her was sure creative.

"Yes, come on in. The door is unlocked"

She invited the man inside simply because why not at this point.

"Umm… Hello my name is Arthur"

The man introduced himself as he walked in.

"How can I help you… Arthur?"

Renfri played along with no real expectations. She even moved her focus back to her journal and continued to write.

"My friend said you can help me with something"

As Arthur said so, a figure Renfri was well acquainted with appeared next to him.

"Hello Renfri, long time no see"

Amon bowed slightly and with a smile observed her perplexed face.

"How about you and I make a deal? You are currently working for Ouroboros, correct?"

"What kind of deal?"

She asked calmly, not acknowledging the second question.

"You will help me with some stuff and in exchange your current… predicament will go away"

"Sounds good"

She accepted without bargaining.

"Excellent! Now first things first I know that there is a hidden compartment here which you are supposed to be guarding. Where is it?"

"There. The second book from the top right"

Renfri pointed with her thumb at the bookshelf behind her. Without saying anything else both Arthur and Amon approached it.

"That one right?"

Arthur reached for the book and as he turned his head he witnessed Renfri with an unnatural speed plunging with a knife in hand towards Amon.

"Ughh"

A low growl came from Amon as he was stabbed in the back. He slowly collapsed onto the floor. Blood flowed from his wound and his eyes quickly lost all focus.

Did she succeed? Did she finally kill that monster when he was expecting it the least?

With an ecstatic look she now turned to look at Arthur however tears appeared in her eyes as soon as she noticed his eyes changing from emerald green in colour to bloody red. His smile was wide, all teeth visible.

He chuckled and all turned illusionary.
