Chapter 12: A New Friend
The door gently opened.
Amon with a wide smile on his face entered through it with Arthur closely behind him.
"Hello Renfri, long time no see"
He bowed slightly and approached her desk.
"Is our deal still on?"
Renfri looked at him and tearesly acknowledged with a simple nod.
"Good"
Amon's smile widened as he sat on her desk.
"Arthur, be so kind and pick me a book from that bookshelf. The second one from the top right to be exact"
He pointed at the bookshelf behind Renfri but never stopped looking at her while doing so.
"Umm… Okay"
Arthur seemed slightly confused by the situation but obliged nevertheless.
He picked up the book titled 'Insight into human psychology' but did not focus on it in the slightest bit as he observed the bookshelf moving and revealing a hidden room.
In contrast to the filth ridden room they were in currently, it was well maintained and tidy not to mention a lot larger. It was filled to the brim with expensive looking furniture such as tables, chairs, wardrobes and I kid you not another pool. On one of the walls in red paint a symbol of the self devouring snake coiled to form the sign of infinity was painted in great detail. It was obvious as to who this hideout belonged to. Ouroboros.
Amon finally stopped terrorising Renfri and glanced over at the room. He seemed quite happy for a completely unknown reason.
"Oh? What a nice surprise. Arthur, why don't you look around our new hideout?"
That shocked Arthur a little.
"Our new hideout? Weren't we trying our best to avoid those people?"
Amon's smile finally froze when he recalled the details of Arthur trying his 'best'.
"Yes that was the plan but a certain someone decided to blow up an entire cliff"
"A cliff?"
Renfri muttered in surprise.
She heard some rumours about the Korin cliff suddenly exploding to bits but she only laughed it off. Which sane person would believe something like that? Not to mention that the city officials were very quiet regarding the matter.
Renfri was very curious about this but seeing the frown on Amon's face she smartly decided to keep her mouth shut.
"Sigh… I am fairly certain that those guys did not bother to report about their hideout in the city and even if they did, staying here for a few days won't do us any harm. They would really be stupid to pursue someone that can casually blow up an entire cliff inside of the city where not only they would have to deal with us but also the city's local forces. Who is to say we are not allied to them? In short at this point the most logical thing for them to do is to bite their losses"
Amon explained his reasons but Arthur had a nagging feeling he wanted to stay here just because it seemed amusing for him. He did not call him out however and instead questioned him about Renfri.
"Then what about her? I am fairly certain she works for them, right?"
Amon smiled when he heard this.
"Not anymore. Now she is our… new friend"
Renfri maintained her stoic expression when she heard this and neither confirmed nor denied. What was the point? She strongly believed she had little say in the matter.
"Anyway we should look for some of their papers. We can use them and with some simple tricks forge ourselves identification documents. I don't want to be inconvenienced and deal with the police because of this"
Amon changed the topic to something else.
"ID's? I am fairly certain they keep this kind of stuff at their headquarters. I never saw them leaving them here"
Renfri explained so but was surprised to see both Amon's and Arthur's expressions darken.
Only after a minute of silence something clicked in her mind. Why did they mention the cliff and the Ouroboros? Wouldn't that imply that they have a base there?
"This…"
She muttered and was terrified to see Amon smile awkwardly while looking at her.
"It looks like you will have to help us out then. I am sure you have some contacts that can deal with the matter"
Renfri calmed down to some extent when she heard this.
"I do know some people that can manage to get some fake papers but they belong to a gang which is known for their brutality. Dealing with them is dangerous not to mention it will cost"
"Do they mutilate the bodies of their enemies beyond recognition? What do they call themselves?"
Arthur finally spoke up when he heard this.
He seemed to have his suspicions regarding the perpetrator of the murdered man they stumbled upon earlier and he appeared to be really invested in the matter which was understandable. He seemed to develop a grudge because of what he witnessed.
"They call themselves The Devils. Did you run into them already?"
"No but we seen some of their artwork"
Amon answered instead of Arthur and he seemed troubled by the proposal.
"We can't use force since that would gather too much attention on us. One thing is to deal with an organisation that everyone unanimously hates but killing members of a gang inside of a city would make us a target of the police and if we show off too much some holy orders might pursue us as well. Do we have any other options?"
"Can't we just pay them for it and not straight up kill them?"
Amon seemed taken aback by Renfri's advice. He honestly forgot that was an option.
It would seem he was used to just taking everything he wants by force a bit too much. Didn't he lecture Arthur about the importance and power of money not too long ago?
He chuckled when he realised this.
"Yes you are right. Silly me, how did I not think of this?"
Renfri however was not amused by this.
