Chereads / Festac / Chapter 2 - Episode 1 (Frailty in Perfection)

Chapter 2 - Episode 1 (Frailty in Perfection)

|POETIC INTRO|

"In all of my days living as human

Nothing came close to my identity as a Balogun

But In all and all, frailty still persist

Perfection still trembles

This is our story

Our life in the twinkle of an eye

Our future right in front of us

Our lantern glowing in imperfection

We are The Balogun's

The most prestigious household in Nigeria

We sit on gold in the core of Africa

We live as gods among men"

This is where it all began. The Legendary of The Balogun's

CHIEF BALOGUN's MANSION. BANANA ISLAND, LAGOS|

It is at Chief Balogun's Mansion a Sunday afternoon in Banana Island Lagos.

The Balogun family gathers to have a family Lunch as instructed by Chief Williams Balogun"

Golden rings on his ears with his grey hair touching the surface of his shoulders. He cracks his fingers filled with rings home to rear diamonds that glitter even with a slight sense of glory. A pair of lenses in front of his eyes is indeed worth a fortune; a limited edition Ex-Chief Justice kate Balogun got him from her last trip to London.

CHIEF WILLIAMS BALOGUN

The election results will be out in a few days; what will it be this time son

( as he picked up the glass of wine in front of him. )

Mrs KATE BALOGUN

(Wife to Chief Balogun)

Chief, let this boy breathe!!!

MR AYO BALOGUN

(Chief/k Balogun son)

It's fine, Mom. I am no amateur to my father teasing me with his sarcastic questions. Well, father, I guess the throne will be mine this time; Lagos will be ours, (wears a convincing smile)

CHIEF BALOGUN

How certain are you of your words this time?

MR AYO BALOGUN

Father, I have done everything you have instructed me to do in the past; I got you the oil well in Warri, I have transferred 80% of The Estates shares under our family name, and a lot more. I think these are enough reasons for you to have some faith in what I can and cannot do.

CHIEF BALOGUN

Not for once have you failed me in the past except in your continual refusal to be my next of kin; also, do not forget this is your third attempt to possess the governorship of Lagos.

MR AYO BALOGUN

I understand your worries for me but at the same time, I am yet to comprehend why you have taken it personally; I denied your involvement in the last election and the one before that. But I have decided to sit on my ego and involve you this time. I find it strange that this is still a valid reason why you hardly rest your eyes even at night these days; you are the Chief himself, the man who has the power to do and undo! I can't lose because you can't allow it. Yes, the law is the law, and Chief Balogun can not change it, yet the law can't comprehend his influence.

(He picks up a bottle of champagne)

Dr AKANDE

(Chiefs younger brother)

What exactly are you implying?

MR AYO BALOGUN

All I'm saying is that your brother can't let me lose, Uncle.

HON JUSTICE BOLA

(The Chief Justice of the nation; brother to Mrs kate Balogun)

I still find it hard to process it that way; I do not know if to tag it as an accusation, yet I'm sure you meant a lot more than you explained!

MR AYO BALOGUN

Well, these are your opinions. I don't think father sees any of what I have said as an accusation.

(He mixes a portion of his Nigeria rice and stew)

ENIOLA BALOGUN

(Ayo Baloguns first daughter)

So what are your thoughts about this grandpa?

MR AYO BALOGUN

Eniola, are you okay? How dare you ask your Grandfather such question? This is a discussion for elders. You have no right to speak!

(He points his right index at her.)

ENIOLA

Oh, I apologise, father. I was just curious about what grandfather thinks of your obvious accusations thrown at him.

MRS KATE BALOGUN

Eniola Balogun, what has gotten into you?

( she asked at the top of her voice)

ENIOLA

But Grandma, I am yet to understand what I have done wrong? All I did was ask my grandfather a harmless question.

(She drops her cutlery  )

BAYO BALOGUN

(Ayo Baloguns second son)

Eniola, this isn't about your question, don't you get it? Silence is your only option at this table. This is adults' conversation so just let them be!

TAIWO

(Ayo Balogun first son)

Her question is not the problem? Her speaking up is? Oh brother, let's be sincere. If sharing her opinion is the problem here, then don't speak of her question not being an issue because if it isn't, you would never speak of the necessity of her silence.

CHIEF BALOGUN

I would appreciate it if we could all eat in silence. I do not want a word on this table concerning this issue again; I arranged this dinner to have a nice and peaceful time with my family.

( He wipes his mouth with a table napkin)

MRS KATE BALOGUN

Temi, the newest doctor in the family, how was your trip from London?

(she smiles at her favourite Grandchild)

TEMILADE BALOGUN

(Mr Ayo Baloguns second daughter)

It went well. As much as I miss life over there, words can't express the joy I feel in being around the people I love the most.

ENIOLA

Forgive me for not saying this earlier. I hope my confess will make up for it.

(She gaze at Temi)

TEMI

I cannot wait to hear this

(she shone her thirty-two)

ENIOLA

Your skin glows!

( she expressed in an exciting tune)

TEMI

Are you serious?

(she drowning in intense excitement)

TAIWO

Yes, it does. London must have treated you well

( drops his right hand around her shoulders)

TEMI

Thank you, Brother ! What do you think of my skin Bayo?

BAYO

Hmm, it is as they have said. Keep it up

( He avoids eye contact with her)

TEMI

Can't you look me in the eyes and say the words?, Why do you have to be so uptight?

BAYO

Temilade Balogun, your skin glows, Are you happy now?

TEMI

Yes I am!

Thank you, Big Bro

(she wears a smile)

"Hon J Bola attempts to light a stick of cigarette"

MRS K BALOGUN

It bothers me so much that you still hold on to the sticks even though the smoke doesn't belong here.

(she scolds her brother)

HON J BOLA

Forgive my manners sister

(he settles his cigarette back into his pocket)

CHIEF BALOGUN

Just for emphasis sake, I hope I made myself clear concerning your return back to your father's mansion with immediate effect?

( He has his eyes fixed at Taiwo)

TAIWO

I have given your words some thoughts Grand Father, and I have decided to return under two conditions that must be fulfilled.

MR AYO BALOGUN

Wow, that will be awesome. I have been waiting for this day. Name your request son!

TAIWO

Firstly, I would appreciate it if Bayo shows me some respect and regard me as the first son of this family. Secondly, my stepmother speaking ill of my late mother is something I won't tolerate anymore!

BAYO

Before I react to this, welcome home, prodigal half brother, I find it fascinating that your return depends on these conditions that must be fulfilled. This table will appreciate it if you stay true to yourself.

(He gazes at Taiwo)

TAIWO

What exactly are you implying, brother?

BAYO

Your return got nothing to do with your conditions. You are scared to decline Grandfather's request, so you came up with these wack conditions that must be fulfilled to keep your fears off the table.

TAIWO

Your words are yours, brother, your tongue and cobweb opinions too. I said what I said, and I stand firmly on my conditions.

TEMI

Guys, that is okay fighting over this is unnecessary!

BAYO

Keep your opinions to yourself. You are the youngest in the room; I think that is enough to speak volumes to your sound mind.

( pointing his Index finger at Temi.)

ENIOLA

That is okay, Don't you guys get tired of fighting? Taiwo, you are the eldest. I had high hopes of you putting a stop to the heat on this table long before Temi spoke up. As for you, Bayo, don't you ever get tired of throwing these unpleasant words at your brother? I often worry about your tongue resenting you for your lack of maintenance and uncontrollable use of words. Yes, I get it. Taiwo is a half brother, and you see him as a huge competition, but he is the first fruit of your father and This family. As for you, Temi, you should know your place. The right procedures become underrated when applied at the wrong time!

MRS BISOLA BALOGUN

(Ayo Baloguns wife)

Enough of all this!!!

(she dropped her right palm on Eniola's cheek)

ENIOLA

Did You just slapped me, mother?

( she asked in disbelief)

MRS BISOLA BALOGUN

Yes, I did, and I will serve your right cheek a hotter one if a word drops from your mouth again. You sat your ass down here and watched this empty vessel you call a half brother disrespect your mother. Instead of standing alongside Bayo to speak up, you try to be a peacemaker in the middle of open gunfire. Even your father sits in silence, playing deaf to all of this. I keep anticipating the day I will earn my respect on this table as much as I anticipate the day of judgment, (she picks up her bag to leave)

MR AYO BALOGUN

Woman, sit down!

MRS BISOLA BALOGUN

I have listened and conformed to every of your demand and command, but today, I have decided to do things my way this time; see you at home!

(she walks out of the room)

MRS KATE BALOGUM

I have told you times without number son that your wife has some loose nuts upstairs

(she cursed)

MR AYO BALIGUN

With all due respect, mother, I find the choice of your words unpleasant and disrespectful to me and my children.

MRS KATE BALOGUN

Forgive my choice of words, son. It wasn't my intention to upset you or anyone on this table, but how stupid of her to walk out on everyone on the table can not be over emphasized.

BAYO

I guess your goal for the day has been fulfilled, brother. I hope you are happy now,

(He gets up to leave as he gazed at Taiwo)

CHIEF BALOGUN

If your association with the Balogun's influence and power is important to you, you should think twice about leaving this room. This is a message to everyone on this table too.

Taiwo, go back home just as it should be. Anyone who has an issue with this, does have an issue with me. As for you, son, talk to your wife. I am slowly losing it. An attitude of this nature will never be tolerated in my presence again.

Akande and Bola see me in my office before leaving, (He holdson to his Golden walking stick as he gets up to leave)

MRS KATE BALOGUN

But you have barely touched your rice, even your beef

CHIEF BALOGUN

I have lost my appetite!

(he walks out of the room)

Dr Akande and Hon J Bola follows suit|

MR AYO BALOGUN

I should be taking my leave now, children. See you at home before your mother turns the house upside down. Take care, Mother.

(He gets up to leave)

MRS K BALOGUN

Send my greetings to your wife

(she wears a smile with invisible acreages of mockery)

MR AYO BALOGUN

I will mother!

(He intentionally ignoring his mother's obvious intangible sarcasm)

CHIEF BALIGUNS HOME OFFICE. (BANANA ISLAND LAGOS)

HON J BOLA

Your son's obvious accusation today brings me so much distress, and I am curious about your thoughts on this Chief?

CHIEF BALOGUN

It is no hidden fact that he is suspicious of my involvement in his failure to secure Lagos in the past but that causing me distress will be as difficult as a camel passing through the eye of a needle. The most he can do is validate his suspicions and possibly confront me about them.

(He picks up a glass of whisky in front of him)

DR AKANDE

None of us here are ignorant of your son's continuous refusal to take over from you, and we all can agree that this was and still is a huge valid sign of responsibility evasion. How then can we trust Lagos in such hands?

(He rests his back on chiefs half a million dollars couch)

CHIEF BALOGUN

Questions of this nature stir up the comfort I feel knowing you are indeed a Balogun. It is no breaking news to you all that Mrs Adesoji will be running for the same position. The Balogun remains the most powerful family in The Nation but The Adesojis can not be underestimated. Mrs Adesoji will do anything to get back at me for ending her husband's life.

Lagos is the birth root of our influence and power. I cannot risk Lagos into the hands of my biggest competitor. The easiest way to prevent The Adesojis is to let my son win; I'd rather dine with an imbecile that I can control than with a serpent I can't trust.

DR AKANDE

The truth you have said Chief, We can't risk it.

Concerning your next of kin Chief, what are your plans for your grandsons since your son has made it known to us that it is indeed of no interest to him, and as much as age is just a number , we all can angry that everyone born of flesh and dust shall return to dust.

CHIEF BALOGUN

I have got my eyes set on Taiwo, but he seems not to be too interested in leadership; Bayo appears very interested. However, his impatience and temper are red flags I can not ignore. Eniola is also worth it because she possesses a strong and disciplined mind, but Bayo would rather die than watch Eniola occupy a position he has worked for his whole life. It is something I shouldn't rush. My position is too important to decide on right now. Our primary focus should be on the election.

HON J BOLA

I second you, Chief. You should take your time.

DR AKANDE

that reminds me, have you decided on the hospital that best compliments Temi?

CHIEF BALOGUN

Her opinion on this is important too, precisely why I requested you send her a copy of the available hospitals, so I suggest you speak to her concerning that first. That will be all for now!

THE SITTING ROOM AT CHIEF BANANA ISLAND MANSION LAGOS

ENIOLA

What do you think of the conversations going on in there?

(Eniola inquired of her siblings as she had her left ear pressed to the Chief's office door)

BAYO

I find it strange that you put your ears through such stress to seek information that got nothing to do with you.

(He lights a stick of cigarette)

TEMI

With all due respect, brother, I do not think the circumstances and timing align with your choice of actions.

(She stares at the cigarette)

BAYO

The supposed truth coming from the least person in this room has indeed disvalued what it is that it is.

TEMI

Forgive me, brother, if you find my warning disrespectful.

TAIWO

The truth is the truth, brother, irrespective of its source. I find it ridiculous and inappropriate of you to carry out such actions here.

(He glances through a fashion magazine)

BAYO

I am indeed speechless, siblings. Your judgements pain me not and certainly won't decide my actions.

ENIOLA

Why is no one as bothered as I am concerning what is going on in there?

TAIWO

It could be a lot, sister. You shouldn't expect us to guess whatever it is; Grandfather is involved, so I wouldn't waste my time if I were you.

TEMI

My instinct tells me it has a lot to do with the elections.

ENIOLA

Exactly Temi, finally somebody speaks my mind. Bayo, you seem puzzled. Is everything all right?

BAYO

I'm very well, sister!

TAIWO

I find it weird that you stay silent over Eniola's curiosity given that you are Grandfather's closest Grandchild.

(Taiwo gazed at Bayo in suspicion)

BAYO

I did not respond because I knew nothing about it. Excuse me, siblings, I shall take my leave now.

(He walks towards the exit door)

TEMI

I must come with you, brother

(she picks up her Bag)

BAYO

I'm afraid you can't, sister; you should go home with Eniola. I have somewhere important to be.

MRS KATE BALOGUN

(she walks into the room)

Will that be more important than bidding farewell to your Grandmother?

BAYO

My apologies, Grandmother.

(He kisses her forehead)

MRS KATE BALOGUN

Take care, son, drive safely.

DR AKANDE

(Walks into the room)

Temi, did you get the email I sent you concerning the hospital placement?

TEMI

Yes, uncle, I apologise for not informing you earlier.

DR AKANDE

So have you made your choice yet?

TEMI

What I had in mind was exempted from the list!

DR AKANDE

Hmm, what would that be? That was a list of the best of our branches. I wonder what else could be of interest to you?

(He aked in dismay)

TEMI

I find Festac Central Hospital attractive, sir. I know it isn't what most of you expected, but I believe it is my choice to make, and I'm very much happy with it.

MRS KATE BALOGUN

Festac Central Hospital? Why would you want to work there? Why would you leave the main meal for the bottom pot? I do not understand, my daughter.

TEMI

That is what I want, Grandmother, I love Festac, and I it is my desire to express that love by offering my services to the class of beings that are most in need of it.

(She said in a trembling voice)

ENIOLA

You love Festac, that I can comprehend but expressing that through the bottom class of the occupants is something I do not understand

( she picks up a glass of wine beside her)

TEMI

You have discriminated against that class which is enough reason for your failure to comprehend my interest in them. Till you take off your shoes, You won't understand the intensity of the pain and struggle inflicted on them!

DR AKANDE

I appreciate your desire to help, my dear, but your request may be difficult to process by the public, and your Grandfather may not let you have your way with this.

TAIWO

I think we owe Temi nothing but our love and support. It is her life she did not spend seven years in London for any of us to compel her to offer her service in a place other than where she truly desires.

MRS KATE BALOGUN

There is no wrong in what you have said, Taiwo. I want nothing but the happiness of all my Grandchildren but I'm afraid this may not go down well with Chief.

CHIEF BALOGUN

(He walks into the room)

Since when do your words validate my opinion?

MRS KATE BALOGUN

Oh, Chief, it surprises me to see you here. Judging from your usual schedule, you should have retired to your chamber.

(she walks up to her husband)

CHIEF BALOGUN

Where do you want to work?

(He intentionally ignores his wife)

MRS KATE BALOGUN

She is yet to pick from the list chief.

CHIEF BALOGUN

Let the young damsel speak for herself, woman!

TEMI

Festac Central Hospital, sir!

(In a trembling voice she said)

CHIEF BALOGUN

Festac Central Hospital, hmm, are you sure about that?

TEMI

Yes, Grandfather!

CHIEF BALOGUN

Okay, if that is what you truly want, so be it, brother, Make arrangements for that. She should resume tomorrow if possible.

(He said to Dr Akande)

TEMI

Mo Dupe sir

(She greeted in Yoruba)

MRS KATE BALOGUN

Please do your best to make us proud; now go home to your parents, which extends to the rest of you.

CHIEF BALOGUN

Eniola Balogun, I hope you spend much time treating your eardrums as you eavesdrop?

(Chief asked in humor as he walked back into his office)

MRS ADESOJIS MANSION AT VICTORIA ISLAND LAGOS

MRS ADESOJI

Chinaza!

(She called out to one of her house maids)

CHINAZA

Yes, ma!,

(she runs to the dining room)

MRS ADESOJI

Where have you been? didn't you hear me calling? are your ears for decorations?

(She asked as she spread mayonnaise on her fresh sliced bread.)

CHINAZA

I be dey do laundry madam.

(She replied in pidgin English)

MRS ADESOJI

It seems you have taken it upon yourself to stay hostile to learning. We have spoken about this; I went as far as getting you an English tutor but still, you choose not to learn, and the consequences of this lifestyle of yours could keep you in chains as a maid even in your grave!!!

TONY ADESOJI

Good Morning mother, Tony, greeted!

(He walks into the dining room)

MRS ADESOJI

Good morning son. I hope the night brought you good fortunes?

TONY

Yes, mother, it did, by the way; what was the yelling about?

MRS ADESOJI

It's nothing, son, just this empty ignoramus standing right here who keeps awakening the devil inside of me.

TONY

What seems to be the problem this time, mother?

MRS ADESOJI

She's yet to speak fluently in proper basic English. You know how much I disgust this pidgin of hers.

(she sips her cup of tea)

TONY

That is alright; mother, give her more time. She will do better, okay?

(He reassures her)

CHINAZA

Yes, Ma, I go... sorry, ma, I will do better.

(She corrects herself.

Mrs ADEAOJI

Leave my sight. You disgust me!

CHINAZA

Sorry, ma

(she walks out of the room)

TONY

Let it go, mother; it is too early to accommodate such anger obviously from someone who can never be worth it, so how are the elections going? When will the final results be out?

Mrs ADESOJI

Very soon, son.

TONY

I do not know if It is just I who feels awoken by the fact that Mr Balogun made it to the finals this time around.

(He appeares puzzled)

MRS ADESOJI

I have given it much thought myself, son, and I have concluded that Chief's involvement in this cannot be overemphasised. Mr Ayo Balogun has always wanted to be governor, but Chief wouldn't let him be because he can't trust his son with such intense responsibility. However, his reason for letting him reach the climax this time is yet to be a resolved misery.

TONY

Isn't it obvious, mother? Chief Balogun sees you as a threat and the only person running for the same post that can stand a chance against you is his son.

MRS ADESOJI

Where is the lie here, son? The truth you have spoken, and I am quite sure Mr Balogun is ignorant of his father's obvious manipulative activities. Lagos is the birth root of The Balogun's power and influence. That is exactly why we are going for it. Chief is not ignorant of this, making it more difficult for us.

TONY

But this shouldn't stop us; mother, our mission remains to bring chaos to The Baloguns. They must pay for what they did to my late father. Dad's death can not go unpunished. That family has done enough. They have been in power for far too long. They have taken enough mother.

MRS ADESOJI

Yes, son, we must seek revenge though I cannot say it's going to be easy; it will take more than just The seat of Lagos to take down The Baloguns. They also control the presidency and all the oil-producing states.

TONY

I know, mother, but as we all know, Rome was indeed not built in a day; let's take what we can first. Let's weaken them once we can do that, we can possess more with ease.

MRS ADESOJI

The truth you have said, son, I have attempted on Chief's life in the past, and none, as we both know, were successful. We lost your father after the first and our shares at Festac Groups after the second, so we have to be careful, son.

TONY

As the saying goes, mother, "if you can't take their life, take that which they take pride in breathing for" since we cannot take his life, let us slowly take away the source of his respect, power and pride.

MRS ADESOJI

I will set up a closed meeting with the NEC Chairman. I must do everything to win, and it can't just be a conversation. We must possess something worth a guarantee to secure the position.

TONY

Whatever it is, do not touch the chairman. It will be too obvious, and The Balogun may take advantage of that.

(He warns)

MRS ADESOJI

Very true, son. Many times, you keep reminding me of your father. You reflect such wisdom as his. I have a plan, son. Trust me; I can handle this; have you heard from your siblings lately? The last time I spoke to Stella, she assured me of their return this week.

TONY

(He gets up to leave)

Yes, mother, Daniel said so too. I have to leave for work now. Take care of yourself and keep me posted on how things go.

ENIOLA's ROOM AT MR AYO BALOGUNS MANSION. FESTAC LAGOS

His Tongue on the tip of her boobs, in glory Eniola moans. Her eyes locked in his as they communicate their desires with no words spoken. She pushes him down below her waistline. His tongue on her clit, she cries out with her eyes shut. In a dead to talk voice, she whispers,

"That is the spot"

he slowly places his face in between her boobs as he buries his right index in her. She drips with no limit as he kisses her. Slowly he rolls her over with her boobs kissing the bed; he buries his fleshy pride in her.

She moans in sweat and tears as she lets him lead with no objections. He hits with intense pressure as her head rings in readiness to let it all out. She slowly pushes him away to create room for her fountain to flow in peace as she wets the bed in freedom.

He rolls her over again, this time with her back kissing the bed; he lifts her legs to carry her burden on his shoulders as he buries a heavier burden in her. She grips his arms and screams for more.

In humor; he whispers in her ears;

"more could kill your legs as they can barely move" With a smile she admits,

"indeed, your pride has punctured my ego"

he digs in harder again; This time she pushes him off as she wets the bed.
