Em um mundo repleto de monstros e magia, uma pequena vila ao norte de seu continente é consumida pelas chamas durante um ataque de uma fera alada, porém, em meio às labaredas cuspidas pela fera, um herói surge para enfrentar o monstro, e após uma árdua batalha, acaba conseguindo afugentar a criatura, embora tenha falhado em abatê-la. Abalado ao ter falhado, o homem cai de joelhos em meio aos destroços do que antes fora um lugar cheio de vida, quando então ouve ao longe, um choro que novamente encheu seu coração com esperança. Uma garotinha recém-nascida foi a única sobrevivente da tragédia, e agora, o homem que outrora fora um aventureiro, se viu em um dilema, pois a criança havia sido banhada pela sangue da fera, o que significava que ela também um dia poderia se tornar um monstro. Embora o certo a se fazer fosse sacrificar aquela criança para poupa-la de tal destino, ele decidiu adotá-la, levando-a para sua casa, o palácio real do pequeno -mas próspero- reino de Jaci.
