October 2010...
As soon as Katherine ended the call, Savannah felt confused and worried. Why would Katherine ask her such weird questions.
What did she want to know about the news? Why would Nathan give Katherine her number without asking her first? All these questions kept bothering Savannah.
She sat down on her bed before picking up her phone from the bedside table. 'Should I text him? Would it be worth it? ' Savannah thought to herself as she kept her phone on the bed.
As she kept wondering about the situation, her mind suddenly drifted to Katherine. Who was she? How is she even related to Nathan? Why didn't Nathan mention her before? These questions kept bothering Savannah, she wanted to ask Nathan about it to get rid of her curiosities but decided not to. What if there's a reasonable reason why Nathan didn't tell her about about Katherine? Who knows, maybe they're cousin's or childhood friends, but still, why didn't he tell her anything about her, could he be hiding something from her.
It's possible, what if he never forgave her for that incident. What if he still suspects that she's the one that killed Patricia and is trying to get her arrested for it. Savannah couldn't stop thinking about it, he could be lying to her and she could easily be falling for it.
Savannah shook those thoughts away, ''Nathan couldn't lie to me. He told me he forgives me and doesn't suspect me. And Katherine, they're just friends, nothing more''. Savannah said to herself but the thought of Nathan betraying her kept lingering in her mind and she couldn't get rid of it.
Savannah picked up her phone and was about to go through it when the lovely aroma of freshly baked cookies filled the room. She touched her stomach, just to hear it rumble. She only had tea and toast for breakfast and since then hasn't tasted a thing. She didn't realize how hungry she was until she smelt the lovely aroma of her mother cooking in the kitchen.
Soon enough, she succumbed to hunger and quickly rushed out of her room, forgetting her phone on the bed as it continuously beeped...
...
Meanwhile....
After Katherine ended the call, Nathan sat on the couch before switching off his phone and placing it next to him. He put his fingers through his hair before throwing his head back and slouching back on his chair and closing his eyes...
Katherine and Nathan have been best friends since childhood. Both Katherine and Nathan's mom's were also best friends during their college days.
Katherine was born 6 years before Nathan, but they still got well with each other. The two of them were pretty close during their childhood days, but then, Katherine and their family moved during 2005.
It was a shame for poor Nathan, he too had to get used to being without Katherine.
Due to the distance, and lack of communication, Katherine and Nathan weren't that close anymore. They barely talked and didn't contact each other for a long period of time. During that time, Both Katherine and Nathan slowly started to forget each other.
One would think they couldn't get back but fortunately, sometime during the year 2008, Nathan and his family also moved to the same state Katherine was in.
By that time, Katherine was already in university while Nathan was still in high school.
The two of them met again in a shopping mall on a random weekend. At first, they couldn't recognise each other but once meeting again when Nathan's mom visited Katherine's, it was almost obvious that the two hadn't forgotten each other completely.
From reminiscing about past memories to talking endlessly for hours, they're friendship began to grow.
It looked like as though things were as they used to, but something was different. Katherine slowly began to act differently towards Nathan. Whenever Nathan is talking, instead of listening to him, she'd stare at him.
This little teenager that she saw grow up is starting to make an effect on her. Was it the change in his attitude or the fact that he looked so different from the Nathan that she knew a few years back.
Could it be what she's thinking? Could she really like her childhood friend? Yes, maybe he sometimes makes her smile without effort, maybe his presence makes her a bit more nervous than usual, but it's impossible, right?
That's what Katherine thought. And soon enough, this boy was all over her thoughts. How did this boy suddenly become the switch to her emotions? How did this boy suddenly become so different from her perspective?
Everything he did lit a spark inside her, how didn't she notice all this about him before? She suddenly had the urge to spend a lot of time with him. Seeing him talk casually with other girls made her feel jealous. Although Nathan knew nothing about Katherine's feelings, he still felt as though she was acting a bit strange.
Sometimes she'd be happy spending time with him, but sometimes she didn't even want to talk to him.
Nathan's affection to other girls soon made her wonder, for how long will he still be hers. She thought about telling him about her feelings. Who knows, maybe they could become something more than friends.
She had high hopes that everything will go smoothly, then one Saturday came, Nathan told Katherine that he had something important to announce to her, he showed her a picture of a girl that looked oddly familiar. Katherine remembered seeing her with Nathan a couple times.
Nathan told her that she was his girlfriend and that they'd been dating for a couple weeks.
Katherine felt shattered, like as though her heart had broken into a million pieces, she never thought in her wildest dreams that he'd have a girlfriend. All this time she kept fooling herself with false hopes.
She was broken on the inside but decided to stay calm in order to keep the peace. Seeing the two of them spend so much time together made her realise that she had been wasting her time. All this while, Nathan thought of Katherine as no more than a friend, and if anything could surprise that, then no more than an elder sister. He could never have liked her in that way, anyways.
She decided to move on and focus more on her studies from then on.
After a few years had gone by, with Katherine as a psychologist intern and Nathan in his final year of high school, Katherine had found it easy to move on from Nathan and was enjoying living her life.
Things were going steady when Katherine got a call from Nathan, saying that he needed her help, and that Savannah's complaining of memory loss. Katherine didn't know what to expect, she heard from Nathan earlier that he thinks Savannah was the cause of his sister's death, if what Nathan was saying was true, then it means that something was wrong somewhere, but where?!...
