Chapter 16 - Her name is red

|The wolf|

I always stay close to the house on Thursdays. Dragon shifters use that time to sneak into my pack. The men are the most aggressive ones. I'll never understand why they can't stay in their own lane. But they provide a good hunt for me.

What I didn't account for when I saw the shifter wasd for him to pause, to stare at something. On in the case of me being unlucky, someone.

That person didn't move. I wish it had been someone else's mate, but Adele is proving to be just as stupid as any other wolf that I've had to take care of. I'll write my disappointment in stone. Creeping forward, I wasted no time in jumping.

The shifter was too focused on trying to blow flames at my mate, he didn't have time to duck out of my reach. My teeth dug into his stomach, and I tackled him to the ground. I growled, releasing him for a moment to bite at his wings. Those hurt the most.

My ears twitched just as I ripped out his left wing. There's another, I turned. If it were just me out here, I wouldn't care. Fire does nothing to my skin, but Adele stands still in the chunk of snow.

A mist of red swirls around her body, and it carries the wind with it. Blocking my vision for a spilt second. When the wind settles, the shifter is on his knees coughing and spitting out blood.

I thought she didn't-

She turned to me, all black in her eyes, jaggered lines around her neck. Then her eyelids droop, and she falls face first into the snow.

I approached her with caution, pressing my snout to her hair. She smells like fire, and death. I nudged her, turning her face out of the snow. She's breathing but not moving. Blood trickles out of her nose and I quickly shift back into a suitable form that can carry her.

"Red." She mumbles something but It's incoherent. Even with my enhance hearing I can't pick up what she's saying. I brought her over to the cave, and placed her on the bed. I searched for a roll of tissue to block the blood.

She must have activated her ability without knowing, that's the only explanation I have. With the blood temporarily stopped. I went in search of the dragon shifters. The one coughing up blood looked so pale while the other one had bled to death. I carried all the items red had been surrounded by, into the cave. Dumping them in the living room.

Back in the snow, my claws lashed out and I used one of my hands to grab the shifter by the back of his neck.

"Who sent you this time?" His lips part, he wheezes, more blood rushing out of his mouth but he can't seem to talk. I pressed his mouth open, something looks wrong with his tongue. It's diced into six strings.

Did Adele do that?

I whistled, and a the old lady's sparrow rushed towards me with a blue berry in his mouth. It landed on my arm, gripping its talons into my skin for balance.

"Take a look at him." The bird turns to face the man, it's black eyes flash red for a second. "Good. Take it back to baba, tell her I'll be visiting her tomorrow morning."

The sparrow nods before taking flight. My fingers tightened, and my claws grew in lengths. Until the shifter was smacking, and kicking in a sad attempt to get me to let him go.

He was already a dead man. He should be grateful that I'm quickening the process.

I don't hate dragon shifters. Specifically. I hate everything that breathes. So I hope he doesn't take this personally.

"When you get to the gates of hell, tell them I sent you." His neck came off with a popping sound that shouldn't have been satisfying but it was. I'll leave his head for someone to come and take it. We make bowls out of their skulls.

It's a hobby one of the female alphas started and others just followed.

If it sounda disturbing, that's because it is. She was a lunatic. I'll need to make night rounds, to he sure that there aren't othe dragon shifters hiding here.

For now, I need to keep an eye on red. She was still unconscious when I returned, leaving the cleaning and the arranging of the items she bought to me.

I don't mind doing this. The thought of submission and Domestication was not what I wanted for my mate but she's as stubborn as she is stupid. I wanted a partnership, but I'm a grown man. I shouldn't be bitching about not getting what I wanted.

If her power hadn't kick-started in the face of danger, she would have just died. There has to be some limit to being stupid.

I've been surrounded by too many morons, I'm starting to think I'm the only one with a brain out there.

Aside baba.

The old lady is smarter than anyone I know. Which isn't much once you consider the intellectual capacity of the people I know.

Just look at my mate. She's one of them.

A sexy moron.

I guess beauty and brains don't really go together.

After cleaning the snow I dragged in, and preparing what we would both eat for dinner I returned to her bed side to stare at her.

"Ow." She moans, her fingers reach for the front of her shirt.

I slapped her wrist, and her eyes shot up.

"Oh good, you're awake."

"Ouch, why did you hit me?"

"You were about to flash me your boobs. That's insensitive."

Her eyebrows pinch, "what?"

I stood straight. "Come out for dinner. You need to take your medication. Next time you're in the face of danger, run."

"I didn't run? What happened then?"

Yeah, she's….. the universe is strongly punishing me.

Why else would I be given such a-

A thump to my window cuts through my thoughts. I turned to see the sparrow. I crept towards it, blocking Adele from being able to see it. I twisted the lock on the window, dragging it halfway.

The bird pushed a letter through, then it took off.

Locking the window back, I grabbed the paper. Adele watched me throughout. Her eyes never left me for a moment.

There a stamp on the letter, so I know that means Baba is inviting me to her home. Without an invitation or directions from the sparrow you can't find her.

Like I said, she likes me. For so long it has been a good thing, let's hope that doesn't change.
