Chapter 3 - Alfresco Café in Arles

After washing up and getting dressed, Bai Yun strapped the paintings that had taken him two years to complete onto the back of his bike and prepared to take them to the gallery to see if they would fetch a good price.

"Boss, how much do you pay for this painting?" Bai Yun had been to the gallery a few times and was familiar with the owner, so he asked him straight away.

"Don't you always pay fifty dollars for a painting?" Without raising his head, the owner replied.

"I've been painting these for two years, take a closer look, they shouldn't be worth fifty, should they?" Bai Yun pulled back the newspaper wrapping the paintings and let them out.

The owner looked at them and said, "I can see that you have spent some time on them, so let's say they are worth eighty each."

"No, look at this one. I have imitated the famous Van Gogh's painting, and I have recreated it to some extent."

The owner took a look at the painting and saw that the colours were really interesting, and it just so happened that a customer had asked in the past two days if there were any night scenes, preferably with the night sky and stars, and the one Bai Yun had brought along might be wanted. So he said, "Bai Yun, this is not the first time you've come here, you know that if you're not famous, you won't be able to sell your paintings at a good price. I think it's good that I can offer you this price for a painting by a student like you, who has only just graduated. I'll give you an auspicious number for the six paintings, six hundred dollars in total.

Bai Yun was discouraged, he had spent two years painting them and they were worth six hundred dollars, he really didn't want to sell them, but he didn't have much money left, so it would be good to sell them for a few hundred dollars, "Okay, deal." Bai Yun didn't want to waste any more time, so he sold the painting and found a regular job.

Having decided to find a permanent job, Bai Yun began to worry about what kind of job to apply for. Suddenly it occurred to her that her housemates had suggested that Bai Yun should work as a receptionist, as they all thought that Bai Yun had a sweet and friendly smile. After thinking about it, Bai Yun really had the idea of working as a receptionist in a hotel. But Bai Yun knows that receptionist jobs don't pay much, so when will her dream of going to Provence come true? Maybe she will only be able to travel around beautiful Provence in her dreams for the rest of her life, not to mention drinking cappuccinos!

Bai Yun searched the job board and found a few famous star hotels, prepared her calendar, put on her white professional suit and took a look at herself in the mirror. She always wears a shirt and jeans and at most a few casual cotton skirts, but she didn't expect to look good in her only professional suit. I'm a hobo now, why do I think I'm a white-collar worker? Bai Yun shook off his head, pulling himself back to reality, he was only preparing to apply for a job, he hadn't even seen the first word yet, and he was already thinking about it.

Bai Yun went out of the house while thinking about it and took a bus to the nearest four-star hotel to apply for a job. When she arrived at the entrance of the hotel, she saw a Baoan staff member wearing a uniform, so Bai Yun boldly approached her and asked about applying for a job. Bai Yun strapped on her high heels and cautiously followed the direction Bao An pointed out.

As she passed through the staff aisle, she saw a large line of pretty girls waiting there, probably also applying for jobs. The recruiter told Bai Yun to line up behind the girls who had come first, and sent Bai Yun's resume into the office. Bai Yun felt a little nervous as he looked at the pretty girls who had come to apply for the same job as himself. It seemed that the job posting stated that only five receptionists were needed, yet there were so many people applying for the job! Bai Yun, who had never had any reception experience before, was really at a loss when faced with so many competitors. What the hell, Bai Yun said to herself, if she didn't try, how could she know she didn't have a chance? With this in mind, Bai Yun's nervousness seemed less intense.
