Chapter 11 - 11

Pegasus. Now that was a name that fit him perfectly, just like his name. "Okay, Pegasus it is," he agreed, still smiling slightly. "Do you want me to call you Pegasi?"

Pegasi chuckled. "Sure! That's fine," he grinned. "Is that okay?"

"Of course." He took another sip of water before setting the bottle aside and standing up. "Are you ready to go?"

Pegasi shook his head. "No," he answered, frowning. "I'm not going anywhere yet. I promised my mom that I'll wait for her here. But she won't be coming anytime soon. So…how about we sit together? We can eat our lunch together. It's getting late, anyway."

Hugo's smile widened as he realized that the other man wasn't mad at him anymore. That was good, he supposed, although it was kind of confusing why the boy hadn't been angry when he discovered Hugo had almost killed him. After all, he could easily have killed him if he really had wanted to. And, besides, it wasn't like he had meant to hurt him. No, the problem probably was much more obvious than that: that the boy didn't believe him.

He shrugged, giving the boy a small smile. "It's okay. I'm not hungry anyways." He sat down next to Pegasus on the floor, crossing his legs and looking around. "So…what do you think happened to all the plants?" He gestured vaguely towards the ground, noticing the brown patches scattered around their feet and the dirt underneath their bodies.

Pegasus frowned for a second, before sighing dejectedly and lying down on the dirt with his arms crossed behind his head. "I don't know," he admitted. "I mean, my dad and sister tried to take photos, but they got stuck. And there was no electricity either. So I guess it's safe to say the whole city is out of power too. Which means…we're completely alone, huh?"

Hugo stared at him in surprise. He had never thought about this situation before. He had always just assumed that everyone would be able to find shelter if necessary. Of course, he understood why they weren't able to use electricity in that moment because most of the houses were still standing, but what would happen once the electricity came back on?

The boy shifted uneasily on the ground, seeming to notice his stare. He lowered his head. "It's okay," he assured him softly, "you don't have to worry about anything." He looked up again. "We'll figure it out. I promise," he added with a small grin.

A sudden lump formed in Hugo's throat when he saw the boy's smile. Despite having lost everything because of him, he managed to smile. His heart melted whenever he looked at the boy, seeing the happiness and relief in his face. He couldn't help but wonder how such a small boy could possibly carry so much sadness on his shoulders.

His thoughts wandered off as Pegasus's words echoed through his mind. They were alone, and there would be no one to protect them from whatever danger was outside. They would be totally helpless without anyone else.

And yet…he knew that Pegasus wouldn't let that happen. He had protected him against the earthquake. Hadn't he?

He glanced at Pegasus, who looked incredibly calm. He looked almost serene as he gazed upwards, admiring the bright sky above them.
