Chapter 11 - Academy [02]

I put on my academy uniform and checked myself in the bathroom mirror. I looked nice in it. This navy blue blazer with gold buttons was unique.

"I should check out my neighbours first." I said to myself in the mirror. I left the bathroom and made my way to the door of my room. I grabbed the doorknob and got a little nervous. This hesitation may be because I nearly died the last time I opened the door.

As I opened the door, I looked left and right to see a long hallway on both sides. There were more doors on the left and right of the hallway. They were the rooms of the other students as far as I guess.

I walked to the right side of the corridor, which took quite a while. I found a staircase going up and down. I decided to take a look at the exterior of the building first, so I headed downstairs.

There were rooms for students on each floor. We were on the fifth floor until we finally got off. In the large lobby, students were chatting and just sitting and thinking.

I could see the door leading out, and to the left of it was the receptionist. I approached the receptionist. She seemed bored and was dozed off looking at the ceiling. She looked about twenty years older than me.

"Hello, Good Morning." I said.

She finally snapped back to reality and looked at me surprised.

"G-Good Morning." She said with hesitation.

"I wanted to ask if you could tell me the directions to the weapon shop." I said.

"Oh! You must be the new student that came in yesterday. You looked pretty exhausted yesterday. What actually happened to you?" She asked me as she looked a little bit worried.

"I.. was just practicing for the qualification exams tomorrow." I said.

"You should take some minutes of rest whenever you are practicing. That would help you know whether your body is exhausted and tell if you can push further or not." She said.

How should I say this? She's trying to be nice with me but I kinda wanted her to mind her own business.

"Thanks for your advice but can I get the directions? I am in a hurry right now." I said as I had gotten a little uninterested in talking with her.

"Oh. Sorry for taking your time. I would need your ID card for giving you a general map of the Academy." She said as she forwarded her hand, asking for the card.

I searched the left and right pockets of my trousers for the card, but could not find it.

"I don't think that I got an ID card when I came here." I said to the receptionist.

"You should check the pocket inside your blazer, it would be there." She pointed towards my blazer.

I checked inside the pocket to find it.

[IDENTIFICATION CARD]

NAME: DEVIAN LEVIATHAN

I gave the card to the receptionist and she placed it near a red crystal orb.

"Please look at this crystal carefully."

This crystal ball is a security measure to ensure that no one can disguise a student's identity. This type of orb is also available in the Academy shop and is useful for paying and receiving money.

I looked at it just like she told me to. The orb turned green and she smiled.

"Just give me a minute." She took out a blank sheet of paper from her desk and started channeling mana into it. The blank paper soon turned into a map of the Academy.

"Thanks for your wait." She said as she handed me the map.

I looked at the map and then walked towards one of the chairs in the lobby. As I was going to sit, another person approached me.

"Nice to meet you. My name is Ather Brigade." He said as he forwarded his hand for a handshake.

"You too. My name is Devian Leviathan." I said as we shaked our hands.

"I saw you talking with that lady over there so I wanted to give you some advice." He said as he pointed towards the receptionist. She was daydreaming again and hadn't noticed us.

"What advice?" I asked.

"Don't talk to that lady. She's a half-elf." She said. I was a little surprised by his words. I didn't think of him to be a believer in these things.

In this world, any hybrids are strongly discriminated against like half-elfs and many others. It is said that they are a lower species compared to other races. They are weaker, slower and dumber than other races. But, I don't believe in those kinds of things.

"So what? I don't believe in that nonsense." I said.

"Listen here. The son of some of the funders of the Academy are attending the Academy this year. One of them is Blake Haize. Yesterday, one of the waitresses in a restaurant had spilled coffee on him and she was fired due to that. In anger, Blake said to everyone that if he saw anyone talking to a half-shit, he would make their life hellish." He said.

I heard about Blake before I had applied for the Academy. His family is the topmost funded to the Academy after the royal family. Because of his influence and connections, he is treated like a king in this place. His word is like law for the people without much influence and connections.

"It's childish." I said.

"It is but if any of Blake's goons saw you talking to that lady then it would certainly mean your days in hell has just started." He said as he looked at the receptionist again.

"So, what should I do? Stop minding my business?" I asked.

"No, the receptionists change their shifts from time to time. So, just don't talk to any halves." He said.

"Okay, thanks. I wish you good luck for tomorrow." I said.

"You too." He said as he waved goodbye and headed upstairs.

Now I feel like I have a lot of restrictions on me.
