Chapter 18 - CHAPTER 18: ARLO'S APARTMENT

Arlo glanced at Tara but maintained a cold and distant tone as he spoke, "There is no need for you to thank me. I simply require a car, and your stubbornness has left me with no other choice." Tara felt a chill in his words, fully aware that she was responsible for the current situation. Arlo continued, "Just stay put while we encounter more zombies on our way to my apartment. Oh, sorry, I mean my residence."

The remainder of their journey was filled with silence, punctuated only by the sound of Arlo crushing zombies under the wheels of the car. They arrived at the Sky Saint Apartment Block, a once peaceful haven for more than 250 residents and their families. Now, it had transformed into a living hell, with zombies lurking in the hallways and knocking on doors in hopes of detecting signs of human presence.

Amidst this chaos, a man appeared, armed with a cricket bat, and swiftly dispatched a zombie that was feasting on the remains of a human. He called out, "Lora, everything is fine. Come, let's go." Lora, a woman in her thirties, emerged cautiously, dressed in a blue dress with an elegant figure and a beautiful face, though marked with concern and worry.

Lora expressed her concern, urging the man to prioritize their safety. However, he reassured her, "Don't worry, I'll be fine. We just need to leave this place and find a safe haven." Lora nodded in agreement, urging him to hurry. They made their way, evading zombies and fighting when necessary, until they reached the entrance of the apartment block.

As they prepared to exit the building, they spotted two zombies standing by the door. The man, named Ash, devised a plan. He would attempt to kill one of the zombies while Lora stood ready with a knife to defend herself if needed. Ash approached cautiously, swinging his bat and swiftly eliminating one of the zombies. However, before he could react, the second zombie attacked him, causing him to fall to the ground.

Witnessing this, Lora found herself trapped against the wall by another zombie. Ash, helpless to assist her, closed his eyes in despair. Suddenly, a gunshot rang out, and Ash opened his eyes to see a man in his twenties clad in black clothes, armed with a pistol and a metal pole. The newcomer swiftly dispatched the zombie pinning Ash, and with a stern expression, instructed them to run to Room 706.

Confused by the situation, Ash questioned the need to return inside, but the man insisted, promising to explain later. Tara, who had joined them, hurried towards the group, and as she passed through the gate, Arlo closed it behind her. Turning his attention to the trio, Arlo chastised them, "Didn't I tell you to run to Room 706?

" Ash explained the multitude of zombies on that floor, doubting their ability to reach the room.

Arlo sighed and offered a solution, "Hold onto my back, and I'll clear the way of zombies. Okay?" Ash hesitated, questioning Arlo's confidence in handling the situation alone. Arlo smiled and assured him, "Just watch."

With that, Arlo led the way, methodically eliminating over 15 zombies they encountered on their path. Both Lora and Ash were astounded by his agile and precise movements. After a few minutes, they stood at the door of Room 706, with Arlo in front. He unlocked the door with his key and gestured for them to enter, saying, "Let's go inside."

As they stepped into the room, Arlo moved to close the door but was suddenly halted by the trio. Confused, he asked why they were stopping him, intending to return to his own room. Tara, wearing a serious expression, informed him, "Arlo, I'm sorry, but you've been bitten. It's best for you to stay outside." Ash added, "I told you it was too risky, but you didn't listen." Lora remained silent, her sadness apparent.

Arlo, refusing to accept their claims, declared, "I'm not bitten. Move aside, I'm going to my room." He began to walk towards them, but Tara, panicking, raised her pistol and pointed it at him. Arlo was stunned by her action, exclaiming, "Tara, what are you doing?" He never expected her to turn the weapon against him.

Tara, trembling with fear and regret, pleaded, "I'm so sorry, but you have to leave." Arlo looked into her eyes, his smile turning bitter, and remarked, "So, you don't trust me, do you? I always believed that our breakup was due to my lack of wealth, but it seems you never trusted me in the first place." Tara's fear intensified as Arlo continued, "You never liked me, and you broke up with me. So, why hesitate to kill me now?"

Arlo started walking again, taking a few steps forward, but Tara, unable to bear it any longer, fired her pistol.
