Chapter 15 - CHAPTER 15: RETURN TO THE HOUSE (2)

Arlo departed from the hotel, driving his car with a heavy heart. Jitendra had gained a deep understanding of Arlo's true character and observed the devastated landscape, filled with zombies and crushed cars. He couldn't help but mutter, "I believe I have lost a potential son-in-law today."

Returning to the room, Jitendra found everyone anxiously awaiting his arrival. Sanjana, concerned, asked, "Dad, is he gone?" Dipti and Jitendra's wife exchanged puzzled glances, sensing something was amiss. Jitendra, his face filled with sorrow, replied, "Yes, he has left." The trio grew increasingly worried by Jitendra's demeanor, prompting Sanjana to ask, "Dad, what happened?"

Taking a seat on the sofa, Jitendra sighed and looked at his daughter, saying, "I feel saddened because I believe we have lost a good potential son-in-law." The trio exchanged confused looks, and Dipti questioned, "Dad, why are you saying such things?"

Jitendra decided to explain everything from the beginning, sharing the details of his conversation with Arlo and the reasons behind his departure. As the conversation progressed, Sanjana's face became filled with sadness and bitterness. She couldn't help but blame herself more and more as the weight of the situation settled upon her.

Whispering to herself, Sanjana concluded, "It's all my fault. He will face danger out there because of me." Her mother approached her, offering a comforting embrace while gently petting her head. She reassured Sanjana, "He will find his way back here. Don't forget, he is strong and single-handedly defeated over 40 zombies when he came to save me." She then turned to Dipti and said, "Take your older sister to your room and take care of her." Dipti nodded and replied, "Yes, Mom." The two of them departed, leaving Jitendra and his wife alone.

Jitendra asked, "Do you think he will come back alive?" Jitendra himself expressed doubt, saying, "I don't think so. The state he was in, he might not survive. However, I hope he proves me wrong because if he doesn't return, our daughter will carry the burden of guilt for the rest of her life, and that wouldn't be good for her."

As Arlo continued driving on a road teeming with aimless zombies, his car swerved, crushing a few in its path. Amidst his tears and overwhelming sadness, Arlo engaged in a soliloquy, berating himself, "Idiot, why did you accept her in the first place? If you hadn't, you wouldn't be hurting like this now." Sanjana's words echoed in his mind like thunderbolts. He continued, "All girls are the same. I won't repeat this mistake again. I can't hate her too much because I didn't love her deeply, but Tara, I can never forgive you for what you did to me."

After driving straight for about an hour, Arlo approached the area near the Parliament of India. Barricades covered the entire region to prevent zombies from infiltrating, and armed soldiers stood guard. Arlo speculated, "They must be rescuing people, including political figures."

Lost in thought, Arlo suddenly heard a voice warning him, "Intruder in the car, leave this area or we will kill you. If you want to enter, go to the first gate." Arlo acknowledged the warning with an okay gesture and drove away.

Covering nearly half of his journey after two hours of driving, Arlo continued cautiously, avoiding hazardous areas. His gaze fell upon a building in the distance, St. Paul's School, where Tara resided. Despite his resentment towards his ex-girlfriend, Arlo didn't wish any harm upon her, as he had once loved her. However, before he could dwell on his thoughts, the car's tire burst, causing the vehicle to lose balance and crash with a resounding thud, attracting nearby zombies.

Arlo kicked open the car door and found himself surrounded by the undead. He muttered to himself, "Shit, I'm surrounded." Fortunately, Arlo remained unharmed due to the protection offered by his armor upon impact. He realized, "I hope there are no Spire zombies in this area. If there are, I'm done for." Arlo fought off a few zombies to create a path, understanding that it was his final opportunity to activate the armor. He thought, "If I can't make it home, it will be disastrous."

Seeking an escape, Arlo searched for a car, finding several in perfect condition but lacking the necessary keys for operation. Frustrated, he contemplated, "I should check the parking lot of St. Paul's School. If I don't find a car with keys there, I will have no choice but to go where I never wanted to return—Tara's house."

Walking cautiously along the road leading to St. Paul's School, Arlo remained alert. While he could handle a few zombies, facing an army of them would be insurmountable. After a few minutes of walking, skillfully avoiding the undead, he finally arrived at St. Paul's School. Concealing himself behind a wall, he observed approximately 150 zombies occupying the parking lot.

Arlo pondered his options, calculating every possibility and devising a plan. After careful consideration, he sighed helplessly, acknowledging that he couldn't handle the situation alone. He muttered to himself, "I'm left with no other choice." With that, he departed from St. Paul's School and set off toward his ex-girlfriend's house, hoping her car was still present with the key intact.
