Chapter 4 - The Unexpected Invitation

Laura couldn't believe that her boss had bought her such an expensive gifts. She wondered what his intentions were and why he was being so kind to her.

Laura shook her head, reminding herself not to read too much into the situation. She knew that Matthew was a busy man and probably didn't have time to pick out a gift himself. It was probably his assistant who had chosen the bracelet on his behalf.

Still, she couldn't help but feel a flutter of excitement in her chest. She had never received a gift from a man before, let alone someone as handsome and successful as Matthew Schneider.

When she entered her room, she changed into her pajamas, and sat down on her couch, staring at the bracelet on her wrist. She couldn't stop thinking about her boss, wondering what he thought of her and whether he saw her as anything more than just his secretary.

Laura shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. She knew that overthinking would only lead to more confusion. She carefully put the bracelet back in the box and left it on her dresser before heading to bed.

The next day, Laura arrived at work early, eager to see Matthew and thank him again for the bracelet and yummy cake. She had even spent an extra hour getting ready, putting on her best dress and makeup. As she walked towards his office, she couldn't help but feel nervous.

When she arrived, she saw that Matthew was already in a meeting with some of the company's executives. She hesitated for a moment, wondering whether to interrupt, but eventually decided to wait outside until the meeting was over.

As she waited, she overheard snippets of the conversation. They were discussing the possibility of a merger with another company, and Laura couldn't help but feel impressed by Matthew's intelligence and leadership skills. He was a true visionary, always thinking ahead and looking for new ways to grow the company.

After the meeting ended, Matthew came out of his office, looking tired but pleased. When he saw Laura, he smiled warmly.

"Good morning, Ms Jones," he said, his eyes lingering on her dress and makeup.

Laura blushed, feeling her heart skip a beat. "Good morning, Mr. Schneider. I just wanted to thank you again for the bracelet and Cake. They're lovely."

Matthew nodded, looking slightly distracted. "I'm glad you like them. Listen, Ms Jones, I have a favor to ask of you."

"Of course, anything," Laura replied, eager to help him in any way she could.

"I need you to attend a business conference with me next week," Matthew said, handing her a folder. "All the details are in there. It's in Toronto, and we'll be staying at the Plaza Hotel."

Laura's heart raced at the thought of going to Toronto with her boss. It was a dream come true for her, and she couldn't wait to see this beautiful city.

"I'd be honored to go with you, Mr. Schneider," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Great," Matthew said, his eyes twinkling with excitement. "We leave next Monday. Make sure to pack for a week and bring your best business attire. This conference is a big deal, and we need to make a good impression."

Laura nodded eagerly, barely containing her excitement. She couldn't believe her luck. Since she started working for Matthew he had given her so many opportunities to grow and learn. This conference was just another example of his faith in her abilities.

As soon as she reached her desk, Laura was greeted by a pile of papers. She sighed inwardly, knowing that it was going to be a long day. She sat down on her chair and started going through the papers, trying to prioritize which ones needed to be done first. Laura's mind was focused on work, and she barely noticed the time passing.

It wasn't until she heard a knock on her door that she realized it was already past lunchtime. She looked up and saw Matthew standing at the door, looking at her with a small smile on his face.

"Hey, Ms Jones," he greeted her. "Are you busy?"

Laura stood up from her chair, feeling a bit flustered. "No, not at all. I was just going through some papers."

"Good," Matthew replied, stepping inside her office. "I was wondering if you wanted to have lunch with me."

Laura's heart skipped a beat at the invitation. She nodded, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness.

They walked to the elevator in silence, with Laura stealing glances at Matthew from time to time. He looked handsome as always, with his dark hair neatly combed and his suit perfectly pressed. Laura couldn't help but feel a bit underdressed, wearing just a simple dress and poorly made makeup.

As they entered the restaurant, Laura's eyes widened at the sight of the elegant decor and atmosphere. It was the same restaurant where they had gone the night before, but Laura felt more overwhelmed this time, knowing that she was going to have lunch with her boss.

Matthew led her to a table in the corner, giving them a bit of privacy. They both ordered their meals and started making small talk, with Matthew asking about hobbies and personal life. Laura tried her best to answer politely, but her mind was a bit preoccupied with thoughts of the bracelet and the lunch invitation.

After a few minutes of awkward silence, Matthew finally spoke up, "Laura, I know that I'm your boss, and I don't want to make things uncomfortable for you. But I wanted to thank you for all the hard work that you've done for the company, and for me personally."

Laura's heart skipped a beat at the unexpected words. She looked at Matthew and saw a sincerity in his eyes that she had never noticed before.

"You're welcome, Mr. Schneider. It's been a pleasure working with you and the company," she replied, feeling her cheeks flush with a hint of embarrassment.
