Chapter 19 - The Blessing of Being Alive

Kivas with his majestic tall pillar of flame was definitely sticking out like a sore thumb. It might be possible that some dweller of the forest was either alerted or attracted to the light on the ruin in the middle of the violet glade under the moonlight.

And Kivas definitely didn't want that. Not to mention, he still hadn't familiarized the control of his new boon. If things like a giant land fish and or a gargantuan stone statue were to approach from beyond the range of the illumination, he would die and lose this once in a lifetime boon.

Just as he thought of such a thing, a creature emerged from the border of darkness. It was a dragon head with smooth almost untraceable shark-like white skin. The teeth were even in length and sharpness, much like a pick with a razor-like edge. As it got closer, its forelegs could be seen crawling as a sharp color of red could be seen on the bottom part of the skin. The muscles and width of human arms, the forelegs were connected to the broad shoulders of its serpent neck much like the anatomy of a human with a long neck.

There was a glowing crack on its chest. On the other side, this truck-sized creature's dorsal side has a stone-like geometric lump that seems to be trapping the heat inside its body. And as the hind legs emerged from the darkness, a long lizard tail could be seen sweeping the ground behind it.

The appearance, the air, and the impression surrounding this creature smells more than a big trouble, as if it could kill of Kivas anytime they like but there was something preventing it from advancing even further forward.

'I see… so it's being wary of the torch's giant flame.' Kivas steeled his resolve, racing his mind for survival. 'So as long as I still have this tall fire on, they wouldn't dare to attack me.'

And just like that, the tall flame dissipated, along with the extra increase in perception range.

'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-'

Kivas immediately ran in an erratic pattern. He couldn't perceive it but he could feel it, the amount of ancient ruination being melted by a whim of the dragon-like creatures.

He acquired a purple orb as a result of this encounter, but he didn't feel like trying to choose for a boon yet as he had just shaved his own life by the length of a hair.

As he wanted to traverse the laying stone pillar in front of him, a massive dread of death shocked his front body. In pure instinct, he turned around. This time however, he managed to witness the large force of flame that was being sent towards his direction.

'There is more than one of them??'

Just before he wanted to give up, he saw that sword symbol on the stem of his torch had its lower half still glowing in radical gold flicker.

He still had the chance to cast the spellcard one more time. But the fact that there were more than one of them was more dangerous than it sounds if he were to perform it hastily.

If he were to cast that showy spellcard thingy again, there was a chance that one or more of the crawling dragons would run away and come back when the duration of the spellcard was finished.

When he were to count back the experience of awe that he felt by holding the powerful torch on his dorsal arm, there seemed to be a clear 20 seconds before the flame would wear off.

And so, Kivas turned back his direction and went through the hypothetical position of the dragons to check on their numbers. As the head of one of the dragons was covered by the illumination of the torch, Kivas witnessed the ribbon of light gathered around its open mouth. The light turns into a luminescence swirl, before transformed into a powerful emission of concentrated burst of flame.

Just as though the dragon was sure that its prey was disintegrating in front of him, the dancing purple orb and the trailing light of the weird tadpole-looking creature's torch was still moving and even grazed the right side of his head.

The dragon then dragged its head to the right while the ray of flame was still on going, destroying everything until it abruptly stopped at some angle while the flame was still bursting.

'Hahahahah! I found your location!'

The reason why it stopped dragging its ray of doom was because one of its kin was right beside that specific point.

These land dragons work as a team, like a pack of wolves hunting with one another. And due to the potential large scale of destruction that they could perform, they need to be wary of each other's location. While the larger numbers make a better successful hunt, it prevents them from reaching the peak of their potential.

Combined with the information of the visible burst of flame that Kivas had just run away from, there were three of them in total.

Kivas then grabbed the right hind leg of the dragon, swinging himself below the hulking mass of muscle and onto the other side, he then leaped one meter forward before swerving his direction to the left, baiting another emission of concentrated ray of flame to make sure that the third dragon stayed where it was.

125 degrees arc, that was the equation of the swing that he needed to perform to wrap all of the dragons in one action.

'Art thou blind or art thou keen?'

He then used all of his strength to leap towards an unbroken pillar once more, and immediately pushed himself away from another ray of flame.

'Ne'er aim for the hind.'

As if he was holding a sword, Kivas angled his torch horizontally as he hanged himself from a sloped broken wall of the ruin, holding the edge.

'Enlightenment for all thy kin!'

The red, black, and yellow golden petals of flames emerged from the tip of the torch, bursting forward a magnificent scorching flame made out of hope and effort. He then pulled his body from the edge of the wall into the air, creating a spinning momentum, and then swung the blade of Takamigahara onto his foes.

Kivas saw it, the confused expression of the dragons a blink of a moment away before they were swept by the expanding scorching arc that was hotter than their own flames. Like a shooting star, the brilliant curve chart itself across the glade and the sky. Just like the comet that had just gone through the countless stars of the night.

What was left on the sword's wake was the illustration of destruction.

It was an utter victory on Kivas' side.

'Urgh… I feel sluggish…'

And as if the sky congratulated him, a small darker cloud passed by, bringing tons of moisture in the form of a rain to the victor of the brawl.

He also got another purple orb. That would make two unchosen boons on his end. He didn't know whether this purple orb was acquired by defeating these creatures nor understanding their nature, but he couldn't care less. For the only thing that was important, was the fact that he was still alive.
