Kane's eyes fell on Charlotte, who was leaning her hip against the wall, and Charlotte lifted up her hand in greeting. Vincent shifted over so that his body could cover hers and tilted his head. "Please lead the way."
"Of course," Kane answered before turning on his heel.
They actually left the area that they were in currently and were moved to another room that was cramped with a desk in the center and two small chairs that were pitched right across from it. Otherwise from a large bookcase behind the black desk chair and a curved lamp that stood solemnly in the corner, it was quite bare and lifeless.
Vincent closed the door shut behind them, and Charlotte calmly took a seat, bringing her hands into her lap. Kane strode over to his desk and yanked a drawer before pulling out a slim folder and placing it on the desk.
"All the information is there," Kane said.
Vincent picked up the folder and looked through the documents, and Charlotte crossed her legs, waiting for Vincent to say anything. There was a sharp breath as Vincent handed the documents over to Charlotte. She stared down at the folder for a second before turning over the cover.
The words swam across the pages, but she was able to get the gist. There was nothing on vigilante blood but instead contaminated by vampire blood. It didn't make sense. There was a crime scene with everything meticulously wiped down, but the DNA results only showed up as those of a vampire.
Charlotte pressed her lips together. "Do you think that the vampire blood was only from those who were victims?"
She stared at him, opening up her eyes wider, trying to send him a mental message that he wasn't receiving, so she voiced it further. "There's a possibility that Do you think that someone got there first before we did, Vincent?"
Vincent brought his hand up to his chin to ponder. "I highly doubt it. Although, it is possible that the information that Stone had was leaked and another person already went there."
Kane crossed his arms. "There was no tracing of any vigilante DNA within the samples that were shown as I have reported to you earlier which definitely makes it possible that someone had reached there first before you had."
Vincent rolled his shoulders. "But why bother to keep the vampire DNA and wipe down everything else? It doesn't make sense. Most of the time, it would be best to clear the whole entire scene."
"You never know," Kane said. "Maybe they were short on time."
Vincent shook his head. "Either way, it doesn't even add up."
"You are right," Kane muttered. "That is all the information I have for you. The vampire's profile is also in that folder, so if you want to alert his whereabouts to the council I would hand it off to Stone instead to take care of it."
Charlotte flipped further into the folder to see the background check and other information about the victims of the case. There were two young male vampires who appeared to have been converted when they were in their early twenties. In the ID photo, the dark bags under their eyes seemed heavy and their lips were painted into a straight line.
One would think that having another chance at life would be exhilarating, but Charlotte could tell from the images of the newly transformed vampires that instead, the unfathomable idea of extending their lifespan that many humans hoped for had only prolonged their pain.
"How long were these vampires missing?" Charlotte asked.
"Three months now," Vincent answered. "They disappeared out of thin air, likely during a hunt that the council had assumed that they perished under the hands of vigilantes."
Charlotte lifted a brow. "They didn't even bother to look?"
"I was dispatched along with some other cavaliers to dig into it," Vincent said. "That's how I remember their faces since I read up on their files."
Kane tapped his knuckles on the desk. "Judging by the state of the room, I don't think that the vampires shown in the folder are alive anymore. It would best to scrap this hideaway and move on to another that Stone calls for."
"I agree," Vincent nodded. "We went to go see Medical, and they didn't have any news either."
"I'm sure that they have already been briefed about the case, however," Kane said.
"Yes they were, and Sera also gave me the results of the experiments that she and Darion have been working on that are strikingly similar to the one seen in that basement," Vincent muttered. "If you want to know more about it, call her."
"I will," Kane replied. "That's interesting to know that both vampires and vigilantes are heading down the same path."
"Let's hope that we aren't the ones that take the fall," Vincent said.
Kane moved some of the pens around on the desk. "Well, of course."
