Chapter 4 - Busted

Mid-day heat turned into dusk, and eventually, the sky became completely dark. By now she had managed to walk the entirety of the slums but she needed to hurry up. Even though there was no time kept, there was still an unspoken agreement among the humans; darkness is for the creatures. As she turned around to begin the long walk back, a feeling of dread, encased her like a tomb. It was something she'd never forget.

Her footsteps seemed to echo loudly, as she picked her way along the path, back toward the buildings. A growing sense something wasn't right also began to pick away at the back of her brain. Her steady pace quickened as the buildings finally came into view. She was tired and hungry but that didn't matter; in the next instant she was on the ground staring wide eyed into dark ember eyes. A cluttering sound all but drowned out by the fear coursing through her very being. Those eyes were the eyes of a creature that was to close for comfort.

The eyes held hers for a few more seconds before the creature stepped away to retrieve what she had dropped. It was the busted up computer she'd found earlier. Long slender fingers reached out from beneath the cape and held the contraband out to her. This had to be a test. She shock her head at the creature before adverting her eyes elsewhere. She didn't dare take the electronic from it's hands.

An amused smile, pulled at poorly hidden fangs, as Celest, watched the human woman pretend she blindly followed the rules. There was always one. The woman that stood before her probably had no idea of what'd just taken place. The entire floor had been searched after, Lazarus, had informed on what he'd watched the human do. Sadly, nothing had been found but that hadn't stopped them from deciding to hide eyes in the human's home.

Celest, watched the woman for a few more minutes before stepping out of her way. She nodded toward the building's only entrance. Enforcers were rarely given assignments that caused them to be out in the open, and even the ones who did, weren't foolish enough to complete them. The contraband computer stayed in her hand as she watched, Mae Lynn, practically run into the building.

After her encounter with the horrifying creature, Mae, could be heard running down the hallways toward her room. It had been stupid to keep the computer with her instead of turning it in and now it was clear she had been spotted. Unchecked fear, etched itself into every waking aspect of her consciousness, as she opened the doorway to her residence. The damage before her eyes made irrational thoughts easier to entertain.

A usually neatly made bed was tossed to the side, and the floorboards underneath upturned. The cabinet that held her few belongings lay facedown, articles of clothing thrown everywhere. She didn't care what it looked like, the only thing she wanted to know, is if they had found her electronic.

She closed the door quickly but decided against trying to search for it. If they'd already went through everything, experience said that this was her last night. She sunk down to the floor and put her head in her hands. Was breaking the rules really worth it?
