Chapter 9 - The Chosen

The quiet moment passes between a towering Lazarus, and kneeling Mae, with the latter holding in her breath. She didn't know what was going to happen to her and the worst visions imaginable began dancing a distorted tune in her head. She kept her crimson eyes downcast for fear of what the creature would do to her. Then her chin was lifted up and she found herself peering into dull black eyes instead of the vicious appearance they usually held. Confusion swept like a tidal wave completely overtaking the fear that had threatened to choke the very life from her lungs.

She watches cautiously as the dull eyed creature gently helps her stand back up onto her feet. She's so busy being caught up in it's strange behavior and eyes that when the creature speaks, it completely startles her, "My name is Lazarus. I am the second hand to the main ones in charge. I know as much as to say that you, Mae Lynn, have been up to no good. I was the one who reported my finding and I was the one who sent for your room to be looked through. I did not know they would bring who they did and I did not know the damage would be that great. I apologize but you must be careful. I don't know what it is that you're planning but remain safe. All our lives depend on this."

For a few seconds there is nothing besides ringing silence after those words pass his lips. Then Mae releases the breath she had been holding and nods in understanding. Even if she has little hold on what is now occurring in her life and career, she feels as if something lays within his words. It is an indescribable feeling that slowly seems to build itself in an instant within the essence of her being. She no longer feels afraid and hardly notices as his grip on her hand tightens until they are both standing in front of her entryway. She hesitatingly steals a quick glance up at Lazarus and then musters up the courage to open the door; in the same position he was left in lays her now aged and frail father, Caspian, the scars from years of abuse stand out far worse against his see through skin. Mae takes one finally glance back at Lazarus, and finds a strange comfort in his odd behavior, he smiles softly at her before nodding in their direction; closing the door and walking back down the hallway. Although there were several matters calling for her attention, there was only one she was going to invest her current energy in, fixing what was left of her father, before finally turning to take great care of the task ahead.
