Chapter 9 - A Day In The Life

[23 March 2004]

Leonard wakes up on a Tuesday morning feeling a bit sluggish with a dull ache in his shoulder. He sits up on his bed groaning a bit from the movement, he rolls his left shoulder a bit to ease some of the discomfort. "Can't believe I let some thug, get the jump on me," Leonard grumbles to himself as he remembers the group of human traffickers he had taken down two days ago, and how he was caught off guard and shot in the left shoulder while tending to a woman's arm that was shot in the crossfire of the fight. He was able to take the thug down before he got a second chance to hit his mark this time.

He sighs and gets up walking to the bathroom, he takes off his long sleeve shirt and throws it in his laundry basket, and enters the bathroom closing the door behind him. He exits the bathroom in only his boxers drying his medium-length hair with a towel, he stops at his closet which has a full-length mirror built into it. He looks his body over, the slash scars on his abdomen, one above his ribs, another on his right breast. His jaw clenches and a glare forms on his face, when he remembers Lady Rana giving them to him when she utterly destroyed him.

He sighs releasing his sudden burst of anger. He opens his closet and takes out a red long-sleeve shirt, black joggers, and black sneakers. After getting dressed, he exits his room, making his way to the dining room for breakfast. He greets the other orphans as he takes a seat at the table. He eats in silence only making small talk here and there but not really taking part in the chatter going on around him. He waves goodbye to the others as they finish eating and rush off the school. After helping the sisters clean the table, he goes on his morning run.

Robin enters his base after his patrol, he walks to his armory and changes out of his suit, taking a shower and putting on a blue shirt, black joggers, and black sneakers. He walks into his command room, where Nathan is sitting by the supercomputer going through some data. Robin takes a sit at the large round table in the middle of the command room. "Find anything?" He asks. Nathan turns in his chair and sighs, shrugging his shoulder, "Still nothing man. Black Mask and Penguin are laying low for now it seems."

Robin nods leaning back in his chair and crossing his arm, "None of their goons are also causing trouble. It seems they both are waiting for the heat of the Election to blow over before trying anything again.". Nathan nods agreeing with him, "We just have to wait until one of them decides to move and then catch them in the act," Nathan watches as Robin nods and says nothing further. They sit in awkward silence with Robin staring up at the ceiling. "How's work at Hyde Consolidated?" Robin asks.

Nathan looks surprised by the question and clears his throat awkwardly, "...It's good, great even. The first few days were rough because everyone thought I just got hired because someone knew Mr. Hyde personally and put in a good word for me...Which is not wrong but anyways so they weren't really all friendly until I started showing them what I'm capable of and they changed their tone.... I made a few friends which I hang out with when you don't really need me here..." Nathan stops taking a deep breath from his rambling and flushes in embarrassment and smiles sheepishly, "...Sorry I didn't mean to ramble,"

Robin just looks at him amused as he shifts a bit in his seat, "It's alright...I'm glad you're doing well.". Nathan clears his throat and then asks, "What about you?". Robin tilts his head "Me?... I don't really know," Robin says turning his head back to stare at the ceiling. Nathan frowns a bit opens and closes his mouth a couple of times, takes a steady breath, and opens his mouth to say something but is cut off by Robin, "I guess I'm doing okay for now... Don't really have any friends,"

"And here I thought we were friends," Nathan says pouting a bit. Robin chuckles, "I don't have any friends outside of being Robin," Robin reiterates. Nathan nods as if satisfied with the answer and then asks hesitantly, "...So no one knows who you are?". Robin just nods not saying anything.

After another moment of silence, Robin gets up and nods at Nathan, "Well, I'm off I'll see you tomorrow Nathan. Good night." Robin says and walks out of the command room. Nathan nods, "Good night Robin," Nathan watches Robin leave while frowning to himself. He sighs turns back to the monitors and mutters, "Wonder how long until he trusts us with his identity?"
