Chapter 10 - A Day In The Life - Part 2

[26 March 2004]

Detective Goodman wakes to the ringing of his alarm clock, he sighs and reaches over, and turns it off. He sits up scratching his peppered beard and stretches his back groaning from relief. He picks up a picture frame from his nightstand, which has a picture of a blonde-haired woman smiling brightly while pointing a finger gun at the camera. He smiles sadly looking over the picture and places it back and gets up walking to the bathroom.

He makes his in the kitchen fixing his tie, he starts the coffee machine and walks to his fridge taking out eggs and bacon. He gets to work making the eggs and bacon for breakfast. He finishes making his breakfast and plates for himself, he places it at the counter and pours his coffee pitch black with no sugar. He sits by the counter and eats his breakfast while taking sips of his coffee. He finishes and puts the plate and cup in the sink to clean later when he gets home.

He exits the kitchen and walks down the hall to the front entrance. He takes his keys from the key bowl and picks up his coat from the coat hanger, he unlocks the front door and as he opens it stops when he hears a sweet voice from behind him, "Cheer up sour wolf. You can't protect people with a frown on your face,". He turns around and sees a woman with blonde hair, and blue eyes grinning widely at him giving two thumbs up. He stares at the woman not saying anything back and closes his eyes shaking his head when he opens his eyes the woman is gone as if she was never there, to begin with. He sighs sadly and then his face takes on its usual calm and bored expression and exits the house.

--Line Break--

Goodman pulls up to the Orphanage and parks his car, he takes the two paper bags of food and exits the car. He enters the Orphanage greeting the sisters and other kids as he makes his way to a specific room. He knocks on the door hearing a voice from the other side telling him to enter. He opens the door walks in and sees Leonard sitting by his bed reading a book. He takes a sit at the table next to the window placing the food on top, he starts taking out the burgers and milkshakes.

"Books ain't gon run away Kid, come and eat," Goodman says already starting to eat from his burger, he watches as Leonard sighs and closes the book placing it on his bed comes over, sitting across from him, and also starts eating. "So... How ya been Kid?" Goodman asks after taking a few bites from his burger. "Okay, I guess. Not really much to do around here. I mostly just run in the mornings and spent most of the day reading books," Leonard says pausing his eating to answer the question.

Goodman nods as he wipes his mouth with a napkin and takes a sip from his milkshake, "Make any friends,". Leonard stiffens slightly in his seat and looks away chuckling nervously, "Friends? Yeah I made some friends," He mutters as he finishes his burger. "Yeah, real convincing," Goodman drawls sipping from his milkshake with a raised eyebrow. "I know right," Leonard says grinning shamelessly. Goodman chuckles and gets up picking up the wrappers and paper bag, "Come on Kid, let's get going,".

Leonard nods standing up and going to put on his shoes, "Where are we going today?". "We're going to Central Park, get you some fresh air," Goodman says while still drinking his milkshake. Leonard looks up from tying his shoes and asks defensively, "What's that supposed to mean?". Goodman tilts his head and asks "Do you leave your room after going for your morning runs? Hell I was the one that had to force you to go on those morning runs so that you don't stay cooped up in here all day,". Leonard purses his lips, "Fine, you've made your point,"

Goodman smiles amused and walks out, "Good, don't want you turning into a hermit now do we?". Leonard closes the door to his room and says, "I'm not religious,". Goodman just snorts "You know what I mean,"
