The deathclaw stood staring at Violet for what felt like an eternity but was in reality just a few seconds. Strangely enough, the deathclaw didn't seem to want to hurt Violet, it was mostly just growling at her as if it was trying to scare her away.
In a desperate attempt, Violet pulls out a pistol from god knows where and fires at the creature, barely scratching those yellowish scales that covered its whole body. As soon as the first bullet was fired, the creature let out a hiss, never taking its eyes off the stupid human that fired at it.
Once Violet froze again, the creature walk in front of her staring down at her. Despite being taller than a human, this particular deathclaw wasn't all that tall compared to the old deathclaw Vito and I met when we escaped from that laboratory. Nevertheless, it still stood at about seven and a half feet tall (222 cm) towering over Violet's small figure. Moreover, those scales that shine in the moonlight made the already scary creature even more menacing, even more so with all of those muscles hidden below the armor-like scales that cover its entire body. Even though this wasn't my first time seeing one of them, it was the first time I realized just how dangerous these creatures were.
Despite being shorter than the last and only deathclaw that I've seen, their shoulders were the same, leading into very long arms that went down to their knees with claws able of ripping down a man in two. However, what caught my attention the most were those golden eyes that were surprisingly expressive for an animal that appeared to attack us if you can call being tossed around an attack.
As well as those two huge curved horns, that emerged from the rear of its head and curved around to eye level, yet as I said before despite trying to scare Violet off, the creature didn't seem all that keen on hurting us. As it was staring down at Violet, one of its long arms reach forward, making the red-haired girl close her eyes, when out of nowhere, the creature picks the pistol with its claws throwing it away before it turns around leaving the girl alone.
Without hesitation, Violet gets up on her feet and dashed away, leaving me alone with the creature that was slowly walking towards me. I could only watch in disbelief how the girl that said that she wanted to be my friend abandoned me, most likely leaving me to die at the claws of a deathclaw. At this point, there was nothing I could do against such a creature unarmed and with only my bare hands. I was neither strong nor durable to best a literal tank in hand-to-hand combat, nor was I fast enough to run away from it, and with no other choice left, I simply had to accept that today I will die.
The deathclaw spots just a meter away from me, staring down at me, just like it did to Violet when out of nowhere, it opened its mouth.
"You, human, big brain?"
This was the second time I'd heard one of their kin speaking and this deathclaw's voice was different from the old one. It was still deep and scary, but it had a feminine touch to it. Despite that, I was confused by more than one thing, especially now after the deathclaw ask me this question. In the end, my curiosity won over everything else.
"I beg your pardon?"
"Me heard meatbags speak you big brain. Me want you."
I was dumbfounded by what the deathclaw just said and before I could even react, she picks me up in one hand before walking away from where we just were, caring me in her hand. There was nothing I could and because of that I just waited in silence to reach our destination and see what will happen to me.
After what felt like an eternity, we came to a stop for the first since I'd been picked by her. I could barely move in her grasp, but after a few seconds of struggling, I finally managed to turn over and look at the reason behind our sudden stop. In front of us stood a somewhat familiar figure, one that almost gave me and Vito a heart attack when we landed in its lair. The very same old deathclaw was now standing in front of us glancing at the female that was holding me in her hand. I could feel her body stiffen when she looked at the older creature as if she was scared of him. Though instead of attacking her or even growling at her, the older deathclaw shook his head at her before he looked in my direction.
"Young human, I'm sorry for what my kin had done to you. She's still young and stupid and she will free you now."
The older deathclaw spoke in a normal done, but his deep voice made the female deathclaw shiver in fear as she slowly lose her grip, letting me fall to the ground. I quickly wipe the dust out of my body before getting back on my feet, eyes still locked on the older creature, fearing that he might pounce on me now that I was free.
"I smell the fear coming from you. Does my appearance scare you all that much, huh?
I blink in surprise not expecting the older creature to actually find out that I was sweating bullets under my expressionless face, then again I was barely old enough to hold a gun, not to mention old enough to fool a creature as old as him.
"I won't lie that I'm not scared, after all, excuse my poor choice of words, but for someone like me you are a monster that could tear me apart in a second."
Surprisingly the older deathclaw let out a laugh before he looks at me once more.
"Well, young human, you are right about us. We, deathclaws are dangerous by nature and great care must be taken when encountering us in the wild. However, I am certain that you have noticed that we are an exception. My pack poses no threat to you or your human communities at least not until we are attacked by those humans that keep snooping around our lair. We have evolved beyond our base cousins and wish simply to be left alone, living our lives in peace rather than killing humans until either one of us is exterminated. I've lived for way too many years and saw how your people would commit atrocities in all kinds of names, and frankly, I do not wish for that to befall on my pack."
If before I was scared of them, now I was curious and even though they say that curiosity killed the cat, I want to find out more about this particular pack of highly intelligent deathclaws. Just as I was about to inquire about their purpose for settling down here, the older deathclaws spoke again.
"Thought I have to admit that my granddaughter seems to be fond of you, young human. Who did that happen, considering that even when we first met you and your green friend almost died of shock when you saw me?"
"I don't know that myself. She picked…better said kidnapped me before bringing me here. "
As soon as he heard my answer, the older deathclaw turned towards his granddaughter before growling like her, making the poor girl shrink in fear under his growl and size. Once he was done "scolding" her, he turns back to face me, this time thought with an apologetic look on his rather expressive face.
"I'm deeply sorry for what happened to you, young human. I would like to offer you my help if you would kindly accept it. My pack and I do not want to fight your people nor do we desire meaningless deaths amongst our sides and because of that I would want to apologize to you and to your guardian."
