Chapter 43 - Chapter 43 - An intelligent son

I didn't know what to say. While this older deathclaw seemed genuinely honest, I doubt that Major Knight would even accept a deathclaw in his outpost, not to mention the scare that this older creature would give to all of the people that currently reside inside the outpost. However, on the other hand, I don't know what Violet told them about the whole situation, and let's be honest, the chances of getting shot at by the NCR are pretty high considering that a deathclaw would come with me.

For now, though, it would be better to return on my own, talk with Knight, and then if the major accepts have the two parties talk things out between them. With that in mind, I turn my attention back to the older deathclaw, who until now stood silent awaiting my answer.

"I don't know if that would be a good decision, sir. Though I can see that you are far from being a mindless beast, I don't believe that the NCR would even hesitate before firing as soon as they see you."

The older deathclaw stroke his chin for a few seconds before he nodded at me. "Hmm, you might be right, young one. Considering that we took over this place, I doubt they would be all that keen on letting one of my ones walks right into their "den". Though there might be someone that could help. Now, follow me young one, we have a lot to discuss and I'd rather not keep a guest outside, but be careful of where your eyes wander, otherwise I won't be able to interfere in time if one of the females or juveniles get the wrong idea about you."

The older deathclaw walked inside the quarry right after he finished speaking, forcing me to quickly make my way after him, not wanting to be left alone with the juvenile female that kidnaped me. I was walking behind their leader, and most of the deathclaws glanced in my direction making me shiver in fear, hoping that none of them would pounce on me, however, surprisingly enough, one glance from the female deathclaw that was behind made any of her family forget about doing anything to me. Despite kidnapping me, she hadn't injured me all that much, and even now she hadn't shown me any signs that she would want to eat me, instead, she seemed quite interested in me for some reason, making me believe that maybe, just maybe not all of the deathclaws were after my body.

Not long afterward, we reach the only building in the whole quarry. The female juvenile seemed reluctant to leave, but when she saw the look the older deathclaw gave her, she lowered her head before leaving me alone with him. When I walked inside the building, I was surprised to see an albino deathclaw trying to figure out how to repair something. Before he could react, the older deathclaw smacked the back of his head making the younger deathclaw look back at us, wearing a confused look on his face.

"How many times did I tell you to stop wasting your time on fixing that damned machine? Not even those monsters knew what this was used for, but despite knowing that, you are still trying to fix it!"

"Dad, I know what it is. This small thing is our bargaining chip for peace. "

"Goris, it's no use. No one even knows how to repair those things anymore. Anyway, I didn't come here to argue with you. I've come here because I would need your help, with something related to this young human."

The younger deathclaw, no Goris looked at me in surprise before he looked back at his father, not understanding why I was here or who was I even alive.

"I don't want to sound rude to our guest, but why is he here and how did he get through Max's team?"

"Your stupid daughter kidnapped him and dragged him to our home. While I might not know how those humans would they do it, I know for a fact that they would retaliate one way or another. Because of that, I brought this young human here to meet you."

Realizing that this was my queue to introduce myself, I straighten my back before looking at the younger deathclaw.

"A pleasure meeting you sir. My name's Dante Castillo, co-leader of the Castillo mercenary group as well as a friend of the NCR troops that are stationed in the Mojave."

"No, no, Dante. I can assure you that the pleasure is mine. As you already know, my name is Goris, and one of the few deathclaw from my pack that doesn't exactly care if he interacts with a human. I take my daughter to cause you quite the headache right?"

"Well… I would lie if I were to say that, but truth be told she did kidnap me in front of another person, and depending on what that person might have told the ones in charge of the Mojave Outpost, a part of a small army might be coming here to rescue me or avenge me."

Goris narrow his eyes at me as soon as he heard the last part of my sentence, seemly making the younger deathclaw weigh out the consequences of his daughter's action.

"Forgive me for asking you this, but what is exactly your importance for the NCR to send a party or as you said an army after you?"

"They're quite a few important places and battles where I alongside my companions were the reason behind NCR's victory, starting with some legion scouts outside of the Mojave and ending with the end of the Powder Gangers. All in all, I'm also one of the few people capable of fixing their guns to pristine condition, and while I'd rather not call myself one, the truth is that I'm a valuable asset for the NCR in their war against the legion."

"You know dad…sometimes I tend to understand you, now that I have a daughter too. Therefore, Dante, I beg you to help us deal with this. I'd rather not have my pack as well as my family killed because of a misunderstanding."

"No harm was done in the end and I would love to help you fix that strange machine of yours in the future. As for the NCR, as long as I can contact one of their nearest camps, I might be able to make them understand what happened. Heck, I could even tell them that your daughter just misunderstood the words of your father and took me away rather than asking me to follow her."

"You are willing to lie for our well-being?"

"It's a small price for peace, Goris. I might be a mercenary due to some unfortunate circumstances, but I do not seek bloodshed or glory."

I could see Goris's eyes shining as he listen to my words, while his father just shook his head at us, though in his weird way, a small smile appeared on his face watching his son react like this.
