Chapter 15 - Deep Sleep

They both stared at each other for what felt like an eternity until a single thought rose from the ashes of William's exhausted mind. He turns toward the door as the doctor steps in once again and mentally prepares himself for whatever is about to come.

She barely glances at William and instead focuses most of her attention toward a bed ridden and paralyzed Elizabeth.

"We don't have a lot of resources here for either of you and eventually you're going to need surgery. Now we can relocate you somewhere else but you're going to need to find a hospital as soon as possible. Your temporarily paralyzed at the moment but in a few months or even in a few years it's going to be permanent. I suggest as soon as you're in the city to go home and then find the nearest specialist."

After her little speech the doctor's gaze shifted accusingly toward William; his mouth went dry and his brain became numb as her eyes nearly bore daggers into anything he's tried to come up with. All William manages to do under her scrutinizing gaze is a meek nod of his head. The doctor nods her head seemingly acceptable in his defeat as she turns toward the door starts to walk away. Halfway out of the threshold she partially turns in Williams direction and finally addresses him,

"We'll be sending you where you said your hometown is but please make sure you're wife gets to a specialist as soon as possible. Her life and mental state will depend on it."

Again all William manages to do is wearily nod as his attention is captured by her words and the beautiful woman laying weak in front of him. His mind races at all the outcomes he'd never wanted to imagine; Two female nurses step into the room and begin attempting to help his factious wife onto her feet. One of the nurses looks over Elizabeth's downcast head to flirtatiously grin at him; his eyes grow dark at her behavior and this causes her to become visibly uncomfortable as she glances away and continues meekly helping Elizabeth.

It takes them almost an hour but to everyone's amazement with some assistance Elizabeth is able to move her feet again; slowly at first but it becomes apparent in William's mind that she is indeed a fighter. He truly smiles as she graces him with beautiful emerald orbs and for a few seconds his mind becomes silent.

With the women exhausted and deterred from their attempted passes at him they finally cross the threshold and give the false newly weds much needed alone time. He runs a calloused hand through his hair and steps toward the third story window that faces the street. Chills run down his spine as his moment of peace quickly evaporates; they are still being followed and outside the hospital laying in wait are the people they've been running from.

A look of determination quickly replaces the one of fear as the realization he'd been expected them to do something like this settles. He knew in the back of his mind that they wouldn't just let them walk away, although it had been nice to entertain the notion for a few moments. He resists the urge to call for someone and decides to focus on making sure certain people don't know where she is.
