Chapter 21 - All That Remains

A week went by and still nothing had changed. His attitude toward her had never ceased just as the beating and berating. Except she kept quiet, far more quiet than usual because there was something being planned. Elizabeth, knew in her heart that he wouldn't willingly just let her get up and leave; she also knew what she was attempting to do could very well cost her life.

Hot, blistering, heat scorches the red earth beneath her bare feet as Elizabeth, prepared herself for today. It was suppose to be her birthday and by now she'd gone a week without the harmful substances. She could feel subtle changes in the way she saw the world and how she managed to control herself. That's also how she'd woken up already knowing the day would be a disaster; she could feel something buzzing in the air but couldn't place where she'd felt the overbearing sense of danger before. She'd woken up before him and managed to run down to the store begging for food.

They never had any money because he would spend it all on unnecessary things or he would trade whatever he could to get his hands on his crystal clear smoke. She hated it, hated what he did to her, and what the world felt like afterwards. She knew he would lose his temper again if he found out she had stopped so she lied and for the most part it seemed to work.

The sun had begun to lower into a beautiful eggshell blue sky by the time either of them had woken up. Disorientination overpowered her senses for a few seconds until she realized what lay ahead. He had already woken up in a rage and it only became worse when he noticed the fresh food and realized where she had gone.

"You left without protection!"

Quickly she reached into her back pocket and took out the knife he made her carry everywhere. His eyes turned from black as coal to ember when he saw the slinder blade but he nodded his head regardless. The flame in his eyes refused to die as he made his way toward two make shift sand bag weights.

Elizabeth's heart quickened as she forced herself to turn away and begin looking through their bag to find something to cook with. She'd been starting to miss the old freight station and found herself dreaming of returning someday. As thoughts raced back and forth in her mind the feeling of dread began to grow. Something wasn't right and all her instincts remained shifted toward Ru. Nothing could explain the feeling of already knowing he was going to try killing her that night, she just knew, and in the next few hours she would wish for death but recieve a fate much worse.
