CHAPTER 18
Kayden first found it hard to believe what his sister, Scarlett had said l about seeing their family butler. But when he heard her say she called him and he did recognise her, those doubts flew right out the window.
"I called loud and clear and chased after him, but he did not stop for a minute. I lost him eventually cause I was getting out of breath. Sigh, I wonder why he did that," Scarlett thought out loud with a sigh.
"Why did he run? It's so strange. I mean he is supposed to be dead right? The firemen confirmed that there were no survivors. So how come I saw uncle Mark now?" She asked all the questions that has been running through her mind on her way back home.
"I am not so sure myself, Scarlett. Indeed he is supposed to be dead. Except he was never in the house in the first place," Kayden reasoned.
"Yes, but he was the one that called us to inform us that everyone was waiting for us to come home and start the celebration. So how come he is alive and mum, dad and the rest are not?"
"Sigh. It can be that he was lucky to escape. But if he did escape successfully, someone else should have been able to escape too," Kayden gently stroked his chin as he analysed what he could of the situation.
"Yeah. I wanted to know how come he made it alive. But the man ran like I was after him for his life or something," Scarlett shrugged and picked up her spoon.
She was not going to let some butler that came back from the dead ruin her appetite for the deliciously cooked meal. Not when she hasn't started well on the grilled fish.
Kayden sighed and followed Scarlett in eating. "How I wished I was the one who saw him. He would not have been able to escape 'cause I would have chased him till he has nowhere to run to."
Scarlett also sighed. "I'm sorry I couldn't do that."
"Don't be sorry. You at least chased him till you were almost exhausted. And that is good enough. Eat up to replenish that energy you used up, okay?"
"Hmm," Scarlett nodded and continued with her food.
The day went by quickly and soon the evening came. Scarlett and Kayden spent time watching a movie and discussing afterwards.
At this moment, in Scarlett's bedroom, she sat on a chair in front of her reading table. On the table was the business card Ryker had given her on Arsenio's orders.
She was contemplating taking the job in the guise of compensation. Now that she was thinking, the money her parents had in their accounts would not go a long way in helping them for years.
Plus, it will be foolish not to work but just depend on the little their parents had made. So considering this might be helpful.
But then again, she had no idea if she would be paid since she is the one doing the compensation.
"Sigh. Scarlett, instead of thinking, why not just give them a call to find out? After all, there is no escaping this."
With that resolved, she dialled the number on the card into her phone and called. After a few rings, the call got connected.
"Hello, good evening. This is Ryker Jones, Mr Stone's assistant on the line. Please who is calling?"
"Ahem! G-Good evening, Mr Jones. It is me, Scarlett. The girl from this mor–"
"Oh, the pretty damsel in distress. I remember you. So I suppose you are calling based on the deal of compensation between you and my boss right?" He asked.
"Y-Yes," Scarlett replied feeling a little nervous about her decision.
"Okay. Then when do you intend to start working so that I can inform my boss?" Ryker asked yet again.
Scarlett felt a little lump forming in her throat. The man was not even giving her any room for negotiation. He did not even ask if she agreed to it yet.
Instead, he went straight to asking her when she is ready to resume servicing his boss, Arsenio.
"Uhm, well I wanted t-to know what kind of service I would be doing. I-I mean till when do I have to s-serve him," Scarlett bit her lips and closed her eyes for how much she stuttered.
Ryker could hear the nervousness or fear in her voice. He chuckled a bit and went on to calm her down.
"There is no need to be scared or nervous, Ms Scarlett. I assure you whatever you are going to do won't be bad," he said.
"T-Thank you for that, Mr Jones," Scarlett did not know what else to say.
"As for the rest details, let us meet at Golden Foods by 10 o'clock in the morning tomorrow. We will discuss it there," Ryker informed her of their scheduled meeting.
"Golden Foods, 10 o'clock tomorrow, got it," Scarlett wrote it down.
"Hmm. Oh, one more thing Ms Scarlett."
"Yes, I am listening."
"Please be on time. Mr Stone condemns unpunctuality," Ryker advised.
"Alright. I will be there on time," Scarlett nodded as she mentally took note of that little detail.
If she was going to be serving Arsenio, she should at least start learning a thing or two about him.
"Very well. When you get there, ask for a reservation under his name and you will be led to the place where we will meet."
"Yes, sir."
"Great the. Have a good evening, Ms Scarlett," Ryker hinted at their end of discussion.
"You too, sir. Good night."
As soon as she kept her phone aside after ending the call, she let out a deep and long sigh.
"Phew. You did well, Scarlett. Yeah. Let's just wait until tomorrow and see how things go. Yeah," she encouraged herself.
"And what things will happen tomorrow?" Scarlett heard a sudden voice by the door. She jolted in shock.
"Kayden."
"Care to explain what I just heard?"
