Samuel's Pov:
Returning to the house was nerve-racking. I was afraid to face my mother and my siblings. I believe they will understand the circumstances. I open the door and I'm greeted by my little sister Ella. "Sammie!" She yells as she hugs me. "Where is papa?" My mother walks over to me. "Welcome home dear. But where is your father?" I can't bring myself to say it. Instead, I grab her hand and place his ring there. She gasps as she clutches the ring.
"How could you!" Tears run down her face. A sharp pain spreads over my cheek after she slaps me. "I'm sorry mother." I hang my head low as tears stream down my face. Mother falls to her knees and Ella comforts her. Evan comes up to me and stares. I look down at him. Anger overwhelms his face. He shoves me into the door behind me. "How stupid are you Sam?!" I stare at him baffled.
"You weren't there Evan. You don't understand anything." He pushes me away from the door and runs out into the smothering cold. "Evan!" I yell hoping to end his sprint but he just continues. I close the door so the little heat we have doesn't escape. I turn around and mother is on the ground hugging the ring. Ella and Alexis are comforting her. "Mother, where is Noah?" She stands and wipes her tears. "He is chopping wood in the forest."
"Thank you. I'm sorry mother." She pulls me into a hug. "My sweet boy, I'm sure you did everything you could. It was just his time to go." Ella and Alexis join us in the embrace. "Thank you for your forgiveness." I release from the hug and head out to find Noah.
I walk into the forest. I follow the sound of an axe hitting wood. I come upon an opening where Noah is chopping wood. He looks up at me. "Brother?" I walk up and take the axe from his grasp. "Father is dead. A vampire killed him. I'm sorry." Noah doesn't say a word until "I'm ready when you are Samuel." A fire burns in his eyes. I pat his shoulder. "Good. I'm proud of you." I hand the axe back to him.
"Sam. Your neck." I reach up to touch two small holes in my neck. "That damn girl. I'll have mother fix it up. No need to worry. Do not stay out too late." I begin to head out of the forest. "I'll be back in three hours, Sam."
I return to the house and walk inside. Mother is making preparations at the table for a funeral. "Planning a funeral so soon?" She looks back at me and nods her head. I sit down with her. "What's the budget?" She sighs and says "We only have a few hundred to spare." "Do you just want a grave or a whole funeral?" She puts her head in her hands. "I just want a grave with some flowers."
I stand and go over to the cupboard. I open it and pull out a jar with some cash. "Father told me about this when we started my training." I set the jar on the table in front of mother. "Oh my. Sam, thank you. This is definitely enough for a nice gravestone. Could you go retrieve Evan? I don't want him running about." "Of course. Oh, will you tend to my wound?"
I sit down at the table. Mother grabs the medical kit and cleans the wound on my neck. "Sam, your clothes are bloody. Take them off I will clean them. You can wear different stuff to go find Evan. Also, you need to get paid for the vampire." She puts a bandage on the bite mark. "I will do everything that needs to be done. I got it, ok mother?" She sits back and smiles at me. "Thank you."
I go into the bedroom and remove my jacket and pants. Then I put a clean pair on. I walk out and set them on the table for mother to clean. "I'm off." I walk out the door to go find Evan.
I walk about 10 minutes to get into town. It's a very little village called Kaohade. We have a few little shops like a convenience store, a bar, and a hunters guild. There are a few more shops but they aren't as important as those three. I take a detour from finding my brother to go get payment for the vampires.
I walk into the guild building, a little bell jingles as I open the door. Anthony is working the desk. "Heya Sam. Get your kill?" I walk up to the counter and place two sets of fangs. "Yeah, I got 'em. At a high cost tho." He reaches into a box that's under the counter. "What happened kiddo?" He sets 60 dollars on the counter. I sigh, "Father got killed while we were looking for the girl. Only 60? There are two sets of fangs." "There was only a deal for the girl, not the other one you killed." I grab the money and stuff it in my pocket.
"I need another job. What's new?" Anthony grabs a binder and begins flipping through the pages. "Some ground goblins are stealing produce in Jackilson. You could take care of them. It's an $80 bounty." He sets out the paper with the details of the job. "I'll take it. Thanks, Anthony." I grab the paper and start to walk out of the guild when he says my name. "Sam, have you ever heard about Zenian?" I think about the name but nothing comes to mind.
"Who's Zenian?" I ask while walking back to the desk. "He's one of the five demon brothers. Rumors say he lives pretty close to here. Another rumor says he's the weakest out of the five. His bounty is $10,000. I can save the paper for you if you're interested." $10,000. I could hire someone to add a few rooms to the house. "That sounds great. Save it for me." I walk out of the guild with the name Zenian on my mind.
Now back to finding Evan. He's probably at the pond. I begin walking in that direction when I hear Ella yell my name. I turn to see her running to me. "Sammie! Have you found Evan yet?" I shake my head no and her face turns into a pout. "Would you like to help me find him?" A wide smile forms on her face as she begins to get excited. "Yeah! I wanna help!"
I grab a hold of her hand and lead us to the pond. When we arrive I see Evan sitting out on the dock. Ella lets go of my hand and runs to him. She hugs him. "Evan it's time to go home."He stands and picks up Ella. "Ok." After that, we begin to head home after a very long day.
