Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: A Turk's Past

Lucrecia saw how Vincent got dragged by Hojo's mooks. And she was shocked to her core, seeing his bloody form. "Wait! What happened to him!? I need an explanation." Lucrecia glared daggers at the soldiers. And they can't really not give her an explanation. She was second only to Hojo in authority at Nibelheim.

"Ahhh, Professor Lucrecia. This Turk was a little too touchy about Professor Hojo's experiments. And he has been relegated as a test subject." The soldier explained and Lucrecia's knees almost gave out from the shock.

'Vincent! I told you! You should've waited! Damn it all! Why does everything have to go wrong? My children are taken from me, and their father…' Lucrecia stared at Vincent's form and was remorseful once again for all the mistakes she has done.

"Take him to a Mako tank, I'll be doing an experiment on him." Lucrecia ordered, with all the mistakes she did. She decided to at least save his life. Just like how his father saved her once back then.

A few years ago, when Lucrecia was still working on another project instead of Jenova. She was able to unearth a mysterious Materia in a tainted pool of lifestream at a mysterious cave that was embedded with tons of Mako crystals.

And with her, was Vincent's father. Grimoire Valentine. "Professor Lucrecia, look over there. There's a tablet there. We might be able to gleam more information of what that Materia and strange lifestream is." Grimoire pointed at a familiar tablet that has been scattered all over the world, made by Cetras to give their cousins, the humans more information.

Lucrecia and Grimoire went up to it and began translating the text. After some time, they completed the deciphering and the two were surprised at what it contained. "The Protomateria? And weapons? It seems that the Materia summons a weapon called Omega… And it results in the destruction of the world, siphoning the lifestream and travel to space in order to find another planet to spawn new life." Lucrecia frowned at the revelation of the Materia.

"So it seems, this thing is much more dangerous than we thought professor. We need to contain this and do some more research about it." Grimoire suggested and Lucrecia agreed immediately. "Umu, we will. And there is another weapon here called Chaos, it is the servant of Omega. Helping it in its endeavors to siphon the lifestream." Lucrecia went into deep thought.

"That tainted pool of lifestream? Then we're very lucky that we are able to find them together at once. Or we'll be sent to a wild goose chase if they're separated." Grimoire gave a small grin and Lucrecia chuckled. "Okay then, let us contain them immediately. I need to learn their secrets so we will at least be able to know their mechanics."

They quickly called Shinra, to retrieve the pool of lifestream and the Protomateria that is as unique as the white and black one. Unfortunately, when Lucrecia began publishing her work. Scientists criticized her work. As people obviously wouldn't believe that a planet destroying weapon is out there somewhere. And a little Materia can summon it.

And while she was researching about the Protomateria. It was acting weirdly at times, something that Grimoire noticed. The Materia was leaking something black, just like the pool of tainted lifestream where they found it. They didn't know that Chaos, the servant of Omega had a defense mechanic.

It was stored in a tank of Mako. But suddenly, the Materia erupted and sent the black substance everywhere. And due to Grimoire being a Turk, he was able to shield Lucrecia from the black goo that was obviously bad news.

"Grimoire! Are you okay? The tainted lifestream hit you square on the chest!" Lucrecia immediately looked at him and she gasped when she saw what was happening to him. It was horribly corrosive, the tainted lifestream ate through his skin immediately and gave Grimoire a lethal dose of Mako poisoning. While also corrupting his body, siphoning his life rapidly.

"Ugh, Professor. I'm glad you're okay." Grimoire gave a wry smile at her and Lucrecia was panicking, not knowing what to do to save him. "Why'd you do that? You should've dodged!" She shouted at him, but he just chuckled.

"Sometimes, a real man has to do some idiotic things professor. Hey, I've got a request… Can you tell my son that I helped you to avert the apocalypse? You must continue your research about Omega and tell the world about this danger." Grimoire looked at her in the eyes seriously.

"I… I will. Thank you Grimoire. I'll at least do everything in my power to know more about Omega. Even if my lab has been shut down." Lucrecia furrowed her brows and Grimoire nodded in satisfaction. He then closed his eyes and perished from the excessive poisoning.

And after a few years, when Lucrecia was assigned to the Jenova project. She met her bodyguard, Vincent Valentine. They grew closer as time went on, even becoming lovers. But guilt ate at her as she blamed herself for Grimoire's death. Leading her to break up with Vincent.

When Hojo killed Vincent, Lucrecia was desperate. She was also getting really unstable due to the Jenova cells that she absorbed. If Ramiel didn't completely absorb his part, unlike with Alexandra. She would've gone insane already.

Filled with grief, losing her children. Their father killed, her identity erased so the twins won't know anything about their parents and Shinra could control them. She at least wanted to save Vincent from his fate. As it was her fault why he got shot in the first place.

"Please work, Vincent…" Lucrecia stared at Vincent that was in a tank filled with Mako. She theorized that the tainted lifestream would be able to bring him back to life if it overloads him with the energy of the planet.

And it worked, technically. Vincent's body mutated and he turned into a demon. Chaos transformed his body and Vincent twitched madly inside the tank. Lucrecia panicked and she tried to stabilize him with more Mako. But what caught her eye was the Protomateria is the glowing Protomateria that was vibrating.

"Maybe!?" Lucrecia remembered that the Protomateria is tightly connected to chaos as Omega is Chaos' master. She quickly loaded it up into a mechanical arm and it entered the Mako tank. The arm quickly jabbed it into his chest and the Materia sunk into his chest without much resistance. Vincent reverted back to his human form, but he was still comatose.

Lucrecia tried to wake him up for days, but the guilt of turning him into a monster pushed her to the edge. All the stress has caught up with her and her children were also going to be transported to Midgar so they will be raised in a controlled environment.

She tearfully turned her back on Vincent that was still in the tank. Deciding to save her children from a life of exploitation. It was the least she could do for their children, she thought.

But Hojo was prepared for it, and her plans were foiled. Leading to her exile as she wandered. With a broken heart, knowing that her children would be puppets of Shinra. And their father who she truly loved is now a monster that will definitely abhor her.
