Chapter 17 - First Task II

After seeing the body of Taze disappear I turned my head back to look at the otherworldly face of Katherine.

But unlike before when she looked at me with unmasked disdain and disgust she now looked at me with interest yet annoyance.

"I don't know why Taze seems to have an interest in you but now I think to seem to have an idea of why." She said with a smile, turned around, and began walking away, "This won't be the last time we meet...wait what's your name?" Katherine asked and turned her head back to face me.

I frowned, "You really think I'm going to give my name to a woman who just tried to damage my soul?" I asked in a defensive tone, "Based on how Taze and the bystanders reacted towards you it's clear that you come from a prestigious background but since I haven't made a good impression on you it's best that I stay as far away from you as possible for my own safety."

Katherine's cherry red lips curled up in a smile, "Smart, Cautious, and Observant. I'm starting to see why Taze sees potential in you but you forgot one thing." Katherine said before appearing in front of me and grabbing my face, "Only the strong are right, being weak is a sin. Taze isn't here to save you right now so what's stopping me from soul-searching you right now and getting the information I want, leaving you as nothing more than a drooling retard?"

I tried removing myself from her soft yet from grip but the strength difference was just too vast. I was a powerless ant in her hands, a toy that could be played with in any way she liked for her own amusement.

Seeming to get a kick out of my struggle she brought her face so close to mine that I could smell her mint ice breath along with the grapefruit scent of her perfume, "See, you're nothing more than a little plaything that I can kill with nothing more than a thought. What are you gonna do cry, scream, beg for mercy? Tell me, little boy." She mocked as she smiled in amusement.

But I didn't break, I didn't cry or beg. I didn't do anything she expected me to do, all I did was just give her a glacial and hateful stare.

Katherine's surprise and interest in me only increased based on my response to her provocation, she released me and stepped away, "I have to say that I'm impressed with you kid. I really am but just because of that doesn't mean that I'm going to leave without getting what I want. I won't ask again, what's your name?"

"Dior Siru," I answered stoically.

"Never heard of that name before," Katherine responded and she had her eyes focused on the ground with her hand on her chin as she went through her mind to see if she could remember if she had met anyone in the past who was related to me.

A futile effort that I saw no point or viable reason for her to do but whatever.

"I'll keep your name in mind." Katherine voiced as she turned around and disappeared into the crowd, but not before she left me a final message, "This won't be our last time meeting Dior Siru. I'm sure we'll see each other again very soon."

Seeing her leave I couldn't help but smile as I looked at her body when she walked away.

Damn, she's bad, but she made a horrible first impression on me with her actions but who knows maybe she'll be able to make it up to me in the future.

I turned around and walked through the revolving door that Taze went through and was greeted with a luxurious lobby. The smell of spices and high-class alcohol was prominent in the air and the warm temperature and snazzy jazz music made it clear that this was a high-class hotel or club.

The light brown walls and floor gave the place a comfy feeling but I knew that deep down it was anything but that.

I walked towards the corner where Taze seemed to be waiting for me with a smirk on his face.

"Oh, so it seems that you're still alive. I thought Katherine killed you or had you on the edge of death for a second since it took you a while to come here." Taze yawned and lifted his back from the corner he was laying in.

My lips twitched, "So you just stood there, waited, and hoped for the best instead of coming out to make sure I was alright?" I sighed and shook my head, "Who was that anyway?"

"Katherine Sinclair," Yaze responded in a stern voice, "It's best that you stay far away from her. If you get on her bad side even I can't protect you."

"Does she really have that much clout?" I asked in doubt. Taze seemed to be a senior and respected figure in the criminal underworld. The fact that he stopped Katherine from killing me without lifting a finger was proof of that and that was especially so since Katherine seemed to be an influential figure in the criminal underworld.

"Mhm," Taze nodded, "She's a peak B-Grade Esper with insane potential. She's a feared Lieutenant of the Murder Strip Gang and very proficient in soul attacks. But what really makes her feared is her father."

"Who's her dad?" I asked.

"Don't bother asking. The less you know the better." He sternly cut off, "Come on, it's time for you to complete your first task." He said.

"My first task?" I repeated confused about what he was talking about.

"Your first job." He answered, "You have money but you're weak. You're lucky no one knows or else you would've been robbed by now, you're also a newly awakened superhuman but you haven't used a Gene Refinement Technique. I'm guessing you're being smart and trying to get a good one but those cost money, a lot of money. Money that you don't have right now."
