Walking past Ezren, who I now knew was the lieutenant of $MM I looked at the other three lieutenants who hadn't said a word since I walked into the room.
The remaining two men and one woman were the lieutenants of Move Alone, Roupell Park, and Snow Patrol.
One of them was wearing a dark hoodie but his face was still visible. His black hair and abyssal eyes seemed to draw in one's soul before it was completely devoured. He had sharp features, pale skin, and a slim build, I guessed that he was of European descent.
I didn't dare gaze into this guy's eyes, it wasn't fear that made me not do it but something else. Instinct I should say, it was something inside me. Something told me not to do it or I would suffer a fate worse than death.
"Smart kid," The man said, "You've picked a good prospect Taze. Young, Perceptive, and Talented along with the right balance of Intelligence, Confidence, and Caution. This kid has potential Taze but whether he lives long enough to fulfill it is a different story entirely, you know how ruthless the streets are, especially in a world where strength means everything." He said calmly as his eyes seemed to examine me as if he was looking for something.
Goosebumps prickled my skin as his stare became more and more uncomfortable as time went by.
"Tavares, word around the street is that Martel will be the target of an attack in the not-so-distant future. It seems like your last few moves have gotten everyone on edge and now fear has replaced rationality." Taze revealed.
Who the fuck is Martel?
Tavares, the name of the man who seemed to be the most dangerous out of everyone here based on pure feeling alone looked at Taze and gave him an irritated glare, not only because of what he said but because all the other lieutenants were now looking at him with firm gazes.
It seems that whoever this Martel is did or gained something that made his gang the prime target of everyone else but there was something off about the reaction of Tavares.
Sure he was annoyed but it seemed that he was only annoyed at the looks being directed at him by everyone in the room. He wasn't nervous or fearful that one of his fellow gang members was being targeted by four other gangs just as strong as theirs. Tavares just seemed to be annoyed by all the attention and was assured that nothing was going to go wrong with whatever plans they had cooked up.
And it seemed that I was listening to information that wasn't supposed to because Tavares was now staring at me like he was about to wrap up a loose end and Taze had no intention of coming to my aid.
This fucker is testing me again!
"Look before you kill me let me just say that you have no reason to. I'm not gonna snitch or reveal this information to some third party for multiple reasons so there's no need to see me as a loose end that needs to be taken care of." I pleaded.
"Oh, and how can I believe you? You might be a spy after all." Tavares rebutted.
"First of all, I'm a newly awakened superhuman. I'm at the bottom of the barrel, worse than an ant so even with me knowing this info I can't weaponize it. Weaponizing it would just lead me to a faster death." I admitted, annoyed at how weak I currently was.
I honestly didn't expect to be in such a situation. I never thought that such a situation could even be possible, it was only just a few weeks ago that I was a mortal in the trenches of Zone 2, and by a stroke of luck after a betrayal, I fell upon an opportunity that anyone would commit the most egregious crimes for. To this day I still can't believe that happened and to make things even crazier I'm now standing in front of the five people that run the criminal underworld of Zone 3, and now one of them wants to put me to death because I listened in on classified information even though it's not even my fault.
But as disadvantageous as this current situation seemed to be it was also the best possible scenario as well as the one I thought was impossible to happen. I thought that I would have to start from the absolute bottom, hitting petty licks and doing small jobs until I got the attention of one of the five gangs. But that time I would've stacked enough money and probably gotten a Gene Refinement Technique, it wouldn't have been the best one since I'm sure the best ones go for tens of millions of Astral Dollars on the black market and it would've taken me who knows how many years to reach such a number.
In addition, once you begin to train a Gene Refinement Technique you cannot switch or you risk death and it would just be a tragedy if I wasted the potential of an S-Grade Gene Awakening Potion all because I wanted to gain strength as soon as possible.
No, I wanted the best foundation possible and I knew that to get that I would have to take a lot of risks. Risks that could get me killed or even worse but that was something that I knew from the very beginning but who would've thought that I would be put in the position that I'm in right now? If one of these gangs gives me a drill to do and I complete it they would take me in and nurture me. They would give me resources and a high-tier Gene Refinement Technique.
"That's true but information is power. No matter how weak you are if you play your cards right even if you don't win the main prize you can still gain something that can be seen as an absolute win in your eyes." Tavares contoured, "With your intelligence and potential this type of outcome can be seen as likely for you, this still proves that you're still too dangerous to be left alive."
"What force can I even join that'll make me pose a threat even if I give them the information that I've listened in on?" I asked, "The only threat could only be megacorporations, and putting yourselves at their mercy is equivalent to selling your soul."
Tavares nodded, "At least you know that much."
Tavares stood up and stretched his body and groaned in relief, "Alright, I'll let you live. For now at least. Not gonna lie, you've impressed so me far kid, if it wasn't for the things that RP is doing right now I probably would've recruited you but unfortunately I've got a bunch of other shit to do." He said and walked passed me as he went towards the door, "You've got yourself a nice prospect Taze, this guy going places. That's if he doesn't get himself killed at least. What's your name kid?"
"Dior Siru," I answered.
"Dior Siru, I'll remember this name. Also, let me know when your bet with Ezren will begin when the time comes. Nothing more would put a smile on my face seeing this bastard lose at his own game."
