Chapter 4 - The Hijacking

The next morning, after eating his breakfast composed of ramen and eggs. Ryan quickly went to Shinjuku train station to take a Shinkansen train to Hokkaido. The platform was busy yet there was a sense of calmness and finality in the air. Everyone seemed relaxed as though there was not any war or calamity coming, it just seemed eerily peaceful. As soon as he plopped into his seat, he quickly dozed off, only awakening when he arrived at Hokkaido. The city seemed asleep in the cool evening although it was only 6pm. The snow billowed down on the city as it snowed heavily, bringing a sense of eternity and stagnation as if the city were frozen in time. Ryan went to a hotel near the Soviet base where he would soon hijack a SU-57.

"Greetings honored customer; how may I be of assistance to you?" said the clerk. "It is quite rare for us to receive customers as Hokkaido is usually a poor place for tourism as there is a major Soviet presence here."

"I am here for some business, and I am also here to visit an old friend of mine. "I would like to have a room for 3 days.", said Ryan; handing over a piece of fake ID and 100,000 yen.

Ryan quickly passed through the large and wide halls of the hotel, taking in the grand lobby. He noticed that there were not a lot of people in this hotel and that many were Soviet soldiers on vacation; glancing at their cold faces and weary looks on their faces. Entering his hotel room, it was very spacious with a large king-sized bed and a couch with a large window overlooking the city of Hokkaido. Ryan opened his luggage and dug out a pair of military grade binoculars and spied on the Soviet base in the far distance.

He could see rows upon rows of fighters and bombers on the taxiways and in their hangars. There was an absence of people with only several bored looking guards and a few mechanics lingering around planes on the base. The fence was in poor condition and the alertness of the base seems low, even for a base in non-combat conditions Ryan thought. The flight would depart at 9 o'clock tomorrow night, giving him enough time to visit his old friend. Ryan took the bus and traveled to his friend's home. As he rode the bus, he said to himself, "What a shame that this city would probably be destroyed soon. That Soviet airfield is just too big of a target to ignore."

Arriving at his friend's place, he walked for 5 minutes before he arrived at his friend's house. He greeted his friend warmly and proceeded to have dinner with him and his wife. At 8, he soon departed and bid his friend one final goodbye as his friend was also aware of the coming calamity. Just before he departed, his friend whispered to him, "I heard that NATO found a new ally to help them, but nobody knows who they are. From what I know their flag is red. Although chances are low of them being the Chinese as the Soviets and Chinese are close allies, be careful. I have a hunch that something big is coming and I do not like the feel of it. It seems that many more nuclear suns will bloom on Earth again."
