Chapter 38 - BETHAVEN

Sarah was sitting outside on a cold winter's evening when her only son, Bethaven came to join her. He threw a white fur coat over her to keep her warm as she was not dressed in a lot of clothes and she appreciated it.

"Thank you. Why are you coming outside when it's cold?"

"You looked lonely. Where's father?"

"He is having a meeting right now with the elders. I thought you knew about it as you were supposed to be part of the meeting."

Bethaven remained quiet because he had not been told anything and from his silence Sarah could know exactly what he was thinking.

"Do not worry. Very very soon your father will start thinking of you as a real man."

"Must I wait my whole life to be a man in his eyes." Bethaven asked

"No, he will see you soon. Did you need anything?" "No, I just came because you looked lonely."

"I am not."

"I was thinking about what dead children or how you're going to lose this one as well."Bethaven said and it made his mother frown.

"Why do you have such a sharp tongue for a child?"

"This sharpness has come from being sharpened."

"What do you mean by that." Sarah asked.

"I had visited a witch in the town."

"Why were you seeing a witch?"

"I wanted to know what exactly is wrong with you and it is father."

"What do you mean it is your father?"

"The witch taught me that your body is rejecting father's seed and that is why you cannot conceive or the child is aborted before maternity term is over."

"What nonsense! This is why you should not be visiting crooked people."

"She is the same which who talked about the outcome of the war so I know she is not crooked. She does have some power in her."

"So what did the witch say about the solution?" "She said that you must sleep with me." Bethaven said.

Sarah remained calm but her body reacted in the way that she wanted and she slapped him

"Off to your room."she said to him.

When he raised his head he was bleeding through his nose because she had slapped him harder than she had anticipated. He got up and bowed to her then he left. At the door leading to the balcony sat the ten year old Clause who had witnessed everything and looked beyond horrified as he looked at the young prince.

The following day at breakfast Bethaven again repeated the words he had said to his mother, except this time it was in the presence of his father who looked beyond enraged by the boy's words. Ceaser drew his sword at his son for the first time and made a cut on the boys cheek.

"I never want to hear this again! You hear me boy." Ceaser warned his son.

Bethaven held not even an anounce of fear in his eyes as he looked at his father in defiance. "Answer me when I talk to you."

"I do not want to. You are here hurting my mother and you expect me to remain silent."

"You're not the one who's having to lose a part of your self every time." Sarah got up from her seat walked to bethaven and pulled him along with her to his room.

Caesar who had remained in the dining room of a turned the table filled with rage. He then shouted to the servants,

"Do not feed that boy for the next two days and whoever gives him food will have to face me." K

Claus who had witnessed everything yet again felt a little sad on behalf of the crowned prince and on behalf of Caesar who had to hear such words from his own son.

That after noon Bethaven re-emerged from his room in hopes of finding food being served at the table but when he got there he noticed that the only plates there were for his father and his mother. He stopped one of the elderly maids and asked her,

"What happened to adding my plate at the table?" "I am sorry young Prince but the king has refused to feed you for the next two days for the insolence that you showed this morning."

"So he expects me to starve?" Bethaven asked her and she nodded,

"Unless you can find food for yourself you won't have to starve." She walked away from him after giving him a short bow then his eyes landed on the boy around his age living in the palace,

"Come heather boy." Claus cautiously walked towards the prince and bowed when he was standing in front of Bethaven,

"Yes sir." Claus said in respect.

"When you are given food for every meal bring it to my room and we can share."

"But what if I am caught?"

"Then I do not know you. You don't have much of a choice because I could easily tell the servants not to feed you either."

"The servants have no say over feeding me and the order will not come from you to starve me because I am under the protection of the King."

Claus answered confidently only to receive a punch the gut from the prince. He fell to the ground but let out not even a sound even though he was in pain.

"You will do as I say or face my wrath."

"I will report this to the King and we'll see who will be facing whose wrath."

Bethaven was beyond irritated by the boys baldness in speaking to him, "How dare you talk back to me like that, you servant boy."

"You are nothing but a rejected prince." Clause said and when Bethaven lifted his leg to kick him Clause quickly crawled away. When he was far enough he stood up and run away not knowing why he had done what he had done or said the things he had.

From that moment on Claus made sure to stay around Ceaser or close to Sarah for protection. When the two days of starving were over Bethaven looked deathly pale and he had slimmed a great deal. None of his parents showed compassion or remorse for him but even then he was obedient to his mother while he avoided his father completely.

It so happened that Ceaser had gone away to meet another king for a peace treaty and he was not to come back for another week. Bethaven saw this as an opportune moment to take advantage of his mother and free her from her cycle of conception and deaths. That night as his mother lay in her bed chamber, fast asleep, Bethaven crept into the room. He stood watching her for a few minutes before he dropped down his pants. He placed an anklet on her that a witch had given him that would make her unable to move. Unbeknowest to him, Clause was in the room at that time and he witnessed everything that had happened.

When morning came and Bethaven had left the room Clause took the anklet off Sarah and called Ceaser's advisor to tell him to write a letter to the King to inform him of what had happened. The advisor was disgusted even as he wrote the letter and he was sure that this time the young boy would not be spared. The letter was sent out discreetly so that they would not alert the boy and so that the arrival of his father would shock him.

Sarah did not even know who had dared to rap her but when Clause informed her that it was her own son she was horrified at the extent that the witch had driven her son. She did not warn him however as she wanted Justice for herself. By sun down Ceaser was back and he was beyond furious. When the Bethaven found out that his father was back he was close to his mother's Chambers and he went in with a dagger that he used to slit her throat. Sarah did not even have time to react as she had been resting at the moment only to be greeted by the sight of her son holding a knife to her neck and before she could do anything he slit her throat and she fell back onto the bed.

Ceaser opened the door of his wife's chambers because he wanted to see her first before he would go to enact his punishment on his son but when he got there Bethaven was standing beside the bed. Sarah's motionless body lay on the bed. Ceaser gave out a loud cry of anguish and he charged towards his son mindless with bare hands. The boy turned around and run thehe dagger through his father's chest. Ceaser was stunned by the boys action but he did not let it distract him. He pushed Bethaven away from him, grabbed his hands and throw him to the wall where his head was crushed and at the same time Sarah opened her eyes.
