Chereads / THE CURSE: ENCOUNTER / Chapter 40 - SURPRISE ATTACK

Chapter 40 - SURPRISE ATTACK

In the kingdom of Zeth, Eve sat in a dark room barely lit by a single candle that was in front of her. Elizabeth stood close to the window watching the almost full moon that had risen. The next day the moon would be full and Eve was confident that she would fight Ceaser and Crow with Elizabeth's help of course. She had noticed that she was always stronger when the moon was full weather or not present.

"Do you really think we can win against Caesar and crown?"Elizabeth asked turning to look at her friend.

She hoped that her friend would change her mind if she told her about everything that could go wrong with the plan,

"I do not look forward to becoming someone's slave,"Elizabeth said frowning,"And I'm sure you don't either."

"We will not lose if we get them by surprise. I have a strong feeling that Crow will not fight.I'm his relative remember."

"Caesar is his master, the one he can't go against even if he wanted to he. You should think this through."

"I have thought enough."

She blow out the candle and Elizabeth turned back to look out the window. She signed loudly everytime she thought about what could go wrong. Elizabeth's thoughts wondered to what would happen if they lost; the aftermath of their failure. The way the lives of the people would change once they were taken as slaves and forced to work for a kingdom that had once been beneath them. She shook her head trying to get rid of those thoughts but nothing helped.

"What are you thinking about?" Eve asked from behind.

"The consequences of our actions on our people. The consequences that you aren't thinking about, Eve." Elizabeth answered without turning to look at Eve.

"All we have to do is kill Ceaser and then Crow will be free."

"We cannot be sure about that and you know."

"We won't know without trying."

"Is it worth trying all because of a heartbreak?" Elizabeth finally turned to look at Eve who's eyes looked blank and empty under the moonlight,"Aren't you being very selfish? Think of all the girls who don't marry the one they love. Do they go around assassinating others?"

Eve wasn't swayed by those words and just smiled.

"Not because of a heartbreak but for the expansion of the kingdom, for the people." Eve said.

"Then I will stand by you till the end." For the rest of the evening the two of them discussed how and when they would attack Dreg. They decided to go to Dreg that very evening using Elizabeth's abilities to help them move faster and incognito. They were in Dreg by sunrise. Because it was a surprise attack they went alone and they feared that their opponents would outnumber them.

Getting into the palace gates was going to hustle in itself. Using an unlikely route was their best option because of how heavily guarded the palace was.

"There is a blind spot in the garden." Elizabeth said as she recalled not seeing any guards in the garden during the time of the ball.

"Then what are we waiting for?"

The two of them managed to sneak in without being seeing but they could not go into the palace because Ceaser and Evirelda were making flower crowns.

"We should wait until the princess leaves." Elizabeth said thoughtfully looking at the innocent girl.

"What are you two ladies doing here?" They heard someone ask from behind.

They froze as they both recognized the voice as belonging to Gregory, a quiet member of Ceaser's circle. Eve slowly turned around to look at him and he stared at them like they were insects.

"Aren't you..."

Before Gregory could finish his statement, Eve had used her abilities to tangle him in her hair and used it to seal his mouth. He retaliated by quickly shifting to his wolf form and broke free from the hair but was still suspended in the air because she was still using her ability. He started to make a noise in his throat that was supposed to turn into a howl but before he could Elizabeth run a dozen vines threw his mouth and they came out at the back of his head; killing him instantly.

Elizabeth was surprised by what she had done so she started to run to leave the palace grounds and Eve quickly followed. In the garden, Ceaser experienced a sharp pain in his chest but he did not show it for Evirelda's sake. He quickly sent her away to call Crow and the lycans who arrived there in a short time.

"You called for us master." Gray said when they had reached him.

"Gregory...where is he?" Ceaser asked still in pain and they started to look amongst themselves,"Find him, use your wolf forms."

The lycans spread out, turning to wolves and this put the palace in chaos.

"I meant everyone should look." Ceaser said between his teeth when Crow did not move from where he stood,"Search from above."

Crow wanted to make an effort to hide himself so he went to the bushes so no one would see him but he instead found Gregory's body dangling from the vines that had been used to kill him. He cut the vines and caught Gregory's body.

'I've found him.' Crow communicated to Ceaser.

'Dead or alive?' Ceaser asked back and for the briefest of seconds, Crow felt the pain that was in Ceaser.

'Dead.'

Ceaser gave out a loud cry of anguish and the cry was heard by everyone in the palace grounds. The lycan brothers heard it and they could tell from the pain laced in his voice that Gregory was no more. The let out a series of howls to mourn their brother's death. They soon gathered around Gregory's body that was resting on Crow's lap. Ceaser was looking in the direction that Eve and Elizabeth had run in and above him hovered a red spiralling cloud.

"Go after them. They started this." Ceaser said gritting his teeth.

The lycans merged their individual wolves into one large one and the wolf that was supposed to be a clear white was bloody. It didn't stay there for more than five seconds as it broke into a slightly disoriented sprint to find Eve and Elizabeth.

"What will we do?" Crow asked.

"We launch an assult on Zeth immediately. She wanted war she will get war."

Crow bowed his head slightly and transformed behind Ceaser making sure to be large enough to be seen by a lot of people. He flapped his huge metallic wings twice and made a loud cry like an eagle. Crow bent down for Ceaser to get onto him and when Ceaser was safely mounted, he took off into the sky. He could tell from how Elizabeth and Eve were moving that they wanted to go back to Zeth without having to get people into harm's way. The wolf that had gone after them was far off track for some reason and it kept running around in circles.

Crow took his time in revealing himself to the people of Dreg and instilling fear in them until the streets were empty ,the palace gates closed and it's door shut. He flew close to the ground where Gregory's body was on the ground and Ceaser used Bezel's ability to set it ablaze. They watched as the trees and bushes around caught fire and when nothing was left of the body, the flames disappeared as if they had not been there.

Roughly an hour had passed and they noticed that the wolf was still running around aimlessly.

"The murderers aren't here anymore!" Ceaser shouted and the wolf stopped moving as if it was listening,"Onwards to Zeth!"

The wolf howled a few times before following Crow who was flying ahead of them. With Elizabeth overusing her abilities, the two women were back in Zeth and preparing their army, famously known as the white knights. The king and queen did not know what was happening and Eve telling them that Ceaser was going to attack them added to their confusion.

"Did you do something to them?!" Rakka shouted as she watched Eve get dressed in armour,"Eve! Elizabeth! Tell me what you have done!"

"Their army is much larger than our own, how will you fight them?" Napoleon questioned looking like a starving man.

"They aren't coming with an army." Elizabeth informed them.

They were quiet for a while and then Rakka asked,

"Aren't you over preparing then?"

"You won't think I am over preparing when you see who he has with him." Eve said tying up her hair in a ponytail,"You must hide in the bunkers. Take the women and children too."
