Herhail looked at his status with low stats in comparison to others, it was time to choose a path. he was finally 12, a miracle to be totally honest considering he had no one to raise him except the cruel world around him.

He was a serf, someone who lived in the slums. he was currently in the cathedral inside a better part of the city he lived in, though he didn't even know it's name. It was probably the only time he would come here in his sickly life, he would never be able to afford the tithe.

"Choose path" He chanted, he did it with words instead of thoughts because he was a child and it was difficult to do it properly with thoughts.

[Path of the serf.

A serf, someone who lives in slums and is poor, good at trickery and survival.

Acceptance reward; Skill and +2 to vitality.

Level-up rewards; +1 to vitality and every five levels, a skill.]

Herhail predicted that he would get this path offered to him, surprisingly, it was actually not the worst path he got.

[Path of the plague infested.

Sickly, weak, and a den for all things disease.

Acceptance reward; Set all physical stats to 4 and get the skill .

Level-up reward; Skill every 4 levels.]

He would be killed immeadiately if he chose this one since everything he touched would be stained by a plague for 10s.

[Path of the weak.

Nothing but a weakling.

Acceptance reward; Set all stats to 1 and get the skill and the skill .]

Herhail was serverely offended, but remembered that literally anyone can get this path.

[Path of the lone survivor

Someone alone for decades at a time, but still alive and kicking.

Acceptance rewards; Increase common stats by 2 and gain the skills; , , .

Level-up rewards; +1 to all common stats, a skill every two levels.]

Herhail liked this one, it was about being lonely and alive for more than a millenia if done correctly.

[Path of the knight apprentice

Someone who has a rudimentary grasp of swordmanship and fighting skills, and has a chance to master them.

Acceptance rewards; Increase common physical stats by 3 and gain the skills; , .

Level-up rewards; +2 to all common physical stats, a skill every two levels.]

Herhail had an extremely happy face when he saw this one, this would let him get taken in by the church or the count! No serfdom for him! No more sitting in a cottage for ten years with barely any food and no clean water!

But there was one left, though it didn't really matter if it was good or not.

[Path of the card-master

Your deck changes the world.

'A deck to rule them all'- a nameless card-emperor.

Acceptance rewards; set all stats below 12 to have 12 instead. Gain the skills; , , , , .

Level-up rewards; +4 to charisma, +2 to all other common stats.

(Skills are gained through )]

"W-what?" Herhail said to himself, he had no clue what this is. The power of pure stats in this was beyond what he should be able to get, and four free skills at the beginning! That's evident of a high class path! And getting skills in another way than leveling, he had never heard of that!

"Are you alright child?" The female priest of athena asked to keep up appearances.

Herhail brought about his best acting skills and said nervous to the beauty of the priest "U-um, I-I got a path far different than the others I could choose from and I was given a bit of a shock."

"It is alright child." The priest walked away, not really wanting to talk to a serf.

Why did Herhail lie? Because being annoying to a priest is going to get you lynched if you come from serfdom, even if it was for a good reason. And second, the class could be 'Forbidden', a class not allowed by the gods. One that wasn't white-listed, and again, it would get him lynched.

Herhail didn't want to be lynched, almost no one does, except for the crazy ones. But the path was far better than anything else he could hope for... Herhail wasn't sure, he wasn't sure. Why did he have to make the choice right now? He was still young, he prayed to the gods from time to time to fit in, but he didn't have a favorate so he couldn't ask one if it was forbidden.

'Tsk,' He clicked his toung in his mind 'It's the only chance I have to make it bigger than some conscript in the boonies.'

Herhail chose that this weird path was his only way to make it big in life and accepted it, he knew that even if it was forbidden, he would be given a chance to have it stripped away from him if he was defeated even if it wasn't good.

"I-I've chosen my path." He said with the actor's spirit flowing.

The priestess looked over and asked "Really? Which did you choose?"

"I-I chose the ." Lying is natural and normal, and as such Herhail lied as much as possible to increase mastery, he wasn't worried since an orphan serf with almost no chances in life wouldn't normally dare to take a forbidden path, and would almost never get one that was difficult to kill.

Most importantly, people looked down on serfs, and didn't want to 'Waste time making sure that mere serfs follow the rules.', couldn't they just kill them later if they felt like it?

"That's great." The priestess said with a fake smile, signalling for Herhail to leave and go 'home', wherever that was. Herhail understood and acted with his greatest evil powers and did a sad face as he slowly and reluctantly walked out.

Herhail slowly and naturally walked to a place not frequented, his little hidey-hole, a shack. At that place he was alone most of the time, it wasn't really hidden. He had signs of paranoia since he trusted someone, only one person, a girl that was also an orphan.

They lived together in a populated area of the slums, Herhail cared for her and taught her a lot. He trusted her, but then she betrayed him by joining a place of female honey-trapers by paying them Herhail's hidden stockpile of stuff for rough times.

Only through his luck of nothing too bad happening while he was creating another stockpile through starving himself for a month, it was his lucky break which let him survive. And as such he found another place to live where that girl didn't know about.

"!" Herhail chanted.

[Deck;

-2 [Rat]s, 1 atributeless mana.

Stockpile;

-None]

"Close," Herhail said as the screen closed infront of him "."

[Cards; 2 [Rat]s]

Herhail closed the menu with his mind after trying a bit, and then went back to testing his skills ""

Herhail felt a sense of dread as his reality started to fall on him, exp, the thing that makes you grow, was an extremely 'scarce' resource, and now he had a lot more to spend it on. he had 17 exp from killing a few mouses over the years when he was hit tough by something or when he had free time and killing one would give some free food. Only when he was lucky though, he was inexperienced afterall.

If Herhail was going to actively hunt some rats or pideons, he should be able to get about 1 exp per day before now. But that was before he got his new path, with his new stats he should be able to get a few more, and if he learns some tracking skills he may be able to increase it a bit more.

"Now... !" a deck-holder appeared in his hands, with only two cards inside. Herhail concentrated again and chanted again "!" the deck-holder floated in the air and the two cards automatically flew out and turned into white cards at the back as he held them in his hands.

In his vision he saw something saying; 'Attributeless mana; 1'. Herhail tried to concentrate and picked out one of the two cards and pushed it out infront of him "I use 1 attributeless mana to summon [Rat]!"

White winds passed in a spot infront of him and completely covered it from vision, the white wind passed and a rat was there. the thing Herhail saw also turned from 1 to 0.

Herhail didn't really know what to do now "Uh... Rat, I want you to kill things, go on your way and kill something like a mouse or something, not something big though." The rat ran away suddenly, out of the shack in the middle of a patch of dirty gras, and into the winding streets.

Herhail had no idea what it was doing, but it should be doing what he ordered, that's what the skill is telling him.

Herhail stopped his skill as the card went back into his deck, Herhail had no idea what the rules of the 'card game' were, but he looked at the card info on the last [rat] card.

[Rat, lvl 0, 0/10.

Tier 1. Strength; 1. Vitality; 2. Dexterity; 2. Endurance; 1. Magic; 0. Intelligence; 1. Charisma; 1.

A humble rat not well known, very weak, a sacrificial pawn of the weak.]

Herhail felt even more pain, but remembered that there were other cards in there, there was even a dog!

[Abondoned wolf; 2450 exp

Tier 1. Strength; 6. Vitality; 4. Dexterity; 5. Endurance; 6. Magic; 0. Intelligence; 2. Charisma; 3.

A humble wolf to weak to be kept in the pack, turned to working for a weak card-user in desperation.

Costs 2 attributeless mana.]

This could kill a serf, a grown one. An animal, if wild, could easily kill the average human with pure ferociousness. 'If the animals were as if they were wild then this might not be all that bad...' He thought, as he started chuckling to himself.

About 20 minutes later as Herhail was trying to make a sharp rock with flint knacking, he was told; [[Rat] has killed a mouse (lvl 0), gained 1 exp.]

Herhail cheered silently as he looked at the card currently in use.

[Rat, lvl 0, 1/10]

it was... going to level up if it went like this. What would happen? Herhail didn't know, even if there was info, as a serf he would never be able to get that information anyways. But what he did know, was that Herhail was really excited at what that rat could do.

A free point of exp for doing almost nothing! This was already a good deal! And if he could get the swordmanship skill or something else, that would already make him better than most people in the slums. He could then make some excuse about 'being scared to get lynched secretly' and become known as a knight apprentice. That'd be great, that'd be wonderful.

Herhail then remembered that girl that dared betray him "Hehe... Wasn't she afraid of rats and mouses? Where is she living now? Hehheheehehe."
